Given it’s only 11 tracks , it’s a real shame Never Too Old isn’t on there What is that for a song, Never Too Old? I remember Leon posted on FB a year ago (in August-September) that he did drum tracks for 12 songs, so one must be left out. Hope it will pop up as a B-side. There are 14 tracks on the digipak edition. Two extra songs Never Too Old To Rock And Roll is in the Rhino's Revenge set. All very audience participation with the chorus and quite a fast song. Obviously not to everyone's taste

Yeah, the 'tbc' (to be confirmed) reference is an interesting one. That could mean anything - including that there won't be any live tracks after all! The fact that they're trying to sell as many of these things as possible suggests that the usual live suspects will be on there. Whether it's versions already released or new renditions by the present line up (not Last Night of the Electrics for example) remains to be seen. Not sure if I should pre-order or not. The Rick Parfitt pre-order was such a shambles - my sis is STILL waiting on the box with the t-shirt from Amazon but it's now been officially deleted - that I'm wary of going down that road. I don't usually pre-order either, but 29€ seems like a good deal to me (the t-shirt itself would cost more at the merch stand at a gig - although I'd never buy it .. ). And if prices go down further till release I'll get the reduction as well: link
Sounds indeed like a real shambles was made off Rick's box set, seeing that Neil experienced exactly the same. My guess is they underestimated demand and didn't produce enough of the things in the first place - and then couldn't be bothered with a second batch .. The pre-order should have given them an indication. I mean, what's the point of offering pre-order otherwise? Amazon ran out pretty quickly and once that happened it wasn't available anywhere else. You can still find the odd box set but it's mighty expensive. I tracked one down (trying to get it for sis's birthday last year) but it was on an Australian site and including postage it was ridiculous. Hundreds of £'s. Whether demand outstripped supply or not I don't know but that should never happen with pre-orders. Amazon presumably thought they were getting more in but that didn't happen for whatever reason.

I don't know for sure, but I think it's a tune from Rhino's solo set. Billy or Cammy could verify ? I looked for it on YouTube....Rhino has played it. Don't know if it's one of his or if its a cover though. A few people have mentioned 11/12 songs. Essentially there will be 13 songs, only 2 of them are only on some versions. (Sorry, hadn't read the previous similar reply on page 2 before I posted).

I think I read somewhere that the live tracks will be from LNOTE. I think I ordered the same Over and Out package....I didn't get it either. By the time they admitted that I wasn't going to get it, I couldn't get the 2 CD version from anywhere so I just ended up buying the basic single CD version. I still haven't heard the 'band mix' version.... was it much different?I didn't think so. I've only played it the once and I did it in isolation without directly comparing the two. But maybe there are those out there who think they're miles apart I'll maybe have another listen now you've brought the subject up I'm like you Morty. Some people hear big sonic differences, and to me it's just exactly the same song! The one exception is the RAOTW remix where I do notice a lot of differences.

Yeah, Never Too Old was written by Rhino and Andy.
It’s catchy, has a call and response to get the crowd involved and is of the ilk.
It’s such a shame it’s not even a bonus track

I have just heard Backbone (the single) on spotify. While to my ears it seems very well produced, there are echoes of the Stones (in some guitar sounds) and ELO (chorus) that do not seem to fit in a Quo single (at least to me). I did not like it very much....time will tell.

Nothing Impressive to me, to be honest, specially after listening ( Just Live versions) to Cut me some slack and liberty Lane. Typical choice of single for QUO ...

Haven't heard it yet. I'm not on Spotify. Although there is a 30-second snippet on YouTube. If it's a bona fide single, it'll pitch up on iTunes I'm sure and I'll catch it there.

Backbone reminds me as well to Jam Side Down, which has been a grower for me and now I quite like it.
What brings me to the fact that after 3 songs Backbone reminds me to HT ( Hopefully.....) CMSS being SG, LL maybe ASU....

I'm really looking forward to this album and I have to say I thinks it's one of their best ever album covers, cause lets face it, they haven't had that many good ones so, I have a question, pre ordering from the site with all the extras, do they take the money immediately? or are they like amazon take around the time of release? cause I've worked out my order being over £40 and I'm broke lol

I haven't pre-ordered yet so I'm not sure. But I appreciate the fiscal issues! And I agree about the album cover. The sleeve is nice and simple, bordering on subtle. Not something those usually involved in designing Quo sleeves are famous for. Although I dare say they've all been on a mandate.

We merely pay on receiving the item, but it might be different in the UK.
I did order two books and another CD with it - one book and the other CD (Albert Hall) have arrived and been paid. Backbone will hopefully arrive at the start of Sept. and the book in Nov. No money has changed bank accounts for these as yet.

If this was to be Quo’s last Studio album. Which I think will depend on how it goes. I think it would have been great if Bob had written an epitaph Poem on the back sleeve. Like a mission accomplished type of poem. Just as closure for the Moths to Butterflies Poem Written where it all started on Ma Kelly’s ! Sentimental I know but would be a nice finish ! “ Moths to Butterflies “ was well and truly accomplished whatever version of Quo floats your boat.

It would be nice anyway, whether it's the last album or not. After all it has been a six decade journey. When you think about what and who has come and gone during all that time and I'm not merely talking music .. The backbone sleeve in a way is like back to the roots too and reminds me of Hello with black predominant and otherwise kept simple. Whether it'll be the last album will depend on so many things .. I doubt even the band has an idea or are planning ahead much these days, other than gigs and similar for next year that have to be booked in advance. The good news for now is that they obviously enjoy the gigs and that we have this album coming out soon.

It's been a very long journey. This 'feels' like the last studio album, certainly of new material, but that's just a personal impression. They haven't announced it as such so they're obviously keeping their options open. And so they should. If they're in the mood and have more material, then there will be another album. But apart from Bula Quo this is the first for 9 years. Keep that up and we're talking of one or two members being in or around their 80's for the next one! Sales of the album might also be an influencing factor. Sales of anything seems to be the driving force these days and tends to lead to 'follow-ups'. The gigs will take care of themselves, I'm sure. I have a feeling this album will do OK. I always look forward to Quo albums and I've rarely been disappointed. Less than half a dozen times in over 45 years.

There were the two reunion tours including extensive audio and video recordings. Then the band have been busy with two acoustic albums since. And while they merely contained three new songs the arrangements, at least in some cases, have made them new songs in a way (DDMC, ROLD ..). .. and then Rick was gone and all plans that might've existed for an official 60 year anniversary had to be dropped. Or any future plans at all and they had to start again from zero with Francis unsure for a while whether to continue at all (and recording a country album with Hannah Rickard in the meantime). We even got a posthumous solo album from Rick. So you can't say the band hasn't been busy and we actually did get a lot - if not necessarily what everybody wanted . If there's one thing we could never fault it's their work ethic. I'd assume if they want to record another album they'll do so - and probably rather sooner than later. I'm not even sure numbers sold play such a big role with it. More how they feel about it (IMVHO)

I'm not even sure numbers sold play such a big role with it. More how they feel about it (IMVHO) Don't get me wrong. I wasn't suggesting they'd been at a loose end I was just observing that the amount of new Quo material has been thin on the ground since 2011 and that if they were to leave it another 8 years, chances are Backbone would be the last. It's not a criticism; just an observation. What they've been busy with are creating and following through with various marketing opportunities. The reunion, the movie, the Aquostic albums; they were all nothing more than that, however hard they worked on them or how much we liked them. Both the reunion and the acoustic projects were very welcome; as was the album in support of the film. And, as you say, we've had solo albums from Francis, Andy, Rhino and Rick since Quid Pro Quo. But they're in the same boat as dozens of other long established artists. Just as examples, the Stones (last two albums 2005 & 2012 but solo albums from Mick and Keef) , ZZ Top (2003 & 2012 but solo albums from Billy Gibbons) and U2 (2009 & 2014); none of them are exactly prolific with new material these days. Although bucking that trend are Depeche Mode who released 4 albums between 2005 and 2017 and Gary Numan (3 between 2011 & 2017). All depends on the motivation and the flowing of creative juices I guess. The money is now in gigs - particularly festivals - so that's what Quo tend to concentrate on. They've earned the right to do as they please.

On September 6th 2019, Status Quo will release ‘Backbone’ through earMUSIC / Edel; the band’s 33rd studio album – the LP will be their 33rd 33rpm!
Some doubters said 'Backbone' was a record that could not be made, but the 2019 line-up of Status Quo has been through a lot, they have chalked up 130 shows as a unit and travelled tens of thousands of miles. This is a group of musicians that is strong, that back each other up and are tighter than ever. 'Backbone' features of a trio songs drawn from the classic partnership of Rossi / Young as well as contributions from all of the rest of the band.
The eleven track album was recorded at Francis' studio in the late months of 2018 and into this year. The sessions were initially just to keep the juices flowing, improvise and have fun. As the hours rolled on, songs stacked up, everyone began to believe that something special was happening. And so it proved. Even from within the group, there had been some resistance to creating a new record.
As Francis says, "This new material had to be seriously good. Quo have achieved so much and meant so much to too many people for the quality to slip now. Also, let’s face it, things have changed and we’re an easier target than ever.
Losing Rick was hard to bear but, through Richie Malone, who was inspired to pick up a guitar by him, we can not only keep going but actually pick up the pace. The energy that he and Leon bring to Quo can’t be underestimated. I wasn’t sure I had another album in me but I couldn’t be more proud of ‘Backbone’. I hope the fans love it, but you can’t please everyone and I’m not going to start trying to now".
To have 'Backbone' means to stand firm, to stand up for what you believe in. The title fits. The hundreds of songs recorded by Quo over half a century still resonate today, and the tracks on this album are a worthy addition to that incredible catalogue. A new Quo studio album is a cause for celebration, especially when it kicks like this one. And for the doubters? A 'Backbone' is also a support, a unifying element that keeps things in shape. Underlying this new record are the core desires to keep creating, to be the best and to keep playing: these are the qualities that have kept Quo at the top for so long. 'Backbone' will ensure that Francis Rossi and Quo keep standing proud. And, by naming the album 'Backbone', they’re ready for the 'Spinal Tap' headlines too!
