Please tell me how it's bad in a musical way... We all know he's struggled with his voice for many years so what's new there? Great lyrics, amazing structure and the dynamics throughout are excellent. It's a heartfelt "cheesy?" track that Rick was pretty much know for. I've listened to it countless times because it's a great track IMHO Well i am happy you like but doesn't make any difference to my opinion that it is truly awful. If this had been a Rossi song it would be ripped to shreads. Lyrics are naff, vocals are terrible and it's bland. I'd love to like it but I just can't.

The lyrics are about him and his son Rick Parfitt Jnr when they were estranged, already stated about the vocals and dunno whats bland about it... but fair enough

I think it's because Rick's now passed which is what makes this poignant. However if he had still been with us and released this on his album as originally intended would we have viewed it in the same way we do now. Personally i'm not that keen it's OK but that's all, like you say similar sounding Francis songs have been ripped apart. OK It's not quite the same subject but it's still about missing his children. This one has had such a bashing since it was released.

Thought I'd add as well johns , this song comes from 1985 when Rick was down on life... he was near enough broke, just about getting by with life with help from Alan... If anything the lyrics couldn't be more true about what he was going through at the time. He lost his daughter not long before this and then he split with his with which also tore him apart from Rick Parfitt JNR. If you find them NAFF then I think it's down right insensitive... It's not about if it was a Rossi song it would be torn apart, that's you just trying to start something. This is about the music a LEGEND has created for us for god knows how many years, music ran through his veins... he gave us 100% on days when he probably wasn't feeling 100% about himself. He said he felt as if HE let the fans down when he had to leave Quo, which is far from the truth... Show some respect. you might not like it fair enough, but don't be an arse.

Hmm.... Being brutally honest, if this had been on a Quo album I'd have skipped it fairly quickly I'm afraid. He sings it reasonably well; slightly fragile obviously. But that's not the point. It becomes a bit of a big rock ballad which I've no time for. But that's a personal thing. Others will love it. And, call me cynical, but HAD it been on a Quo album and Rick still been alive would it have been met with some derision? Discuss Don't get me wrong, I'm not slagging this off. It's just not the sort of music I care for. Or ever have. Ta for putting it up though. Someone in the background is already giving this album a bit of a shove and that can only be a good thing all round.

It's growing on me, I think it's ok/alright at the moment. His voice does sound very frail though and that isn't a criticism, only an observation. I tend to agree with your comment re the Rossi song bit. I don't think there's any doubt about that whatsoever.

Sorry Rick, but this sounds awful - like a cross between Sorry and Restless. Well, he was high on drugs at the time and nearly everything the band wrote back then was well under par - this is no exception. And Rick's voice has definitely not been up for it any more. Hope the rest of the album is better than this, brcause else I'm not going to buy it.
Imagine he had done it in the 70s - it would've sounded so much better ..

It sounds like something from Recorded Delivery now that I think about it a little more. Which, if it was written in 1985, would make perfect sense.
It's an odd one to make available as a first hear I think. We all know he had a 'softer' side musically; sometimes great, sometimes less so. But the bottom line is, if you like big rock ballads, no reason why you shouldn't like this. But if you prefer Big Fat Mama and Shine On, I suspect you may not.

As opposed to you I do like most of Quo's ballads. I don't like Mystery Island though - or this one. Can't actually say which of the two is worse. At least MI suited his voice a little bit better ..

Gees even back in 1985 I would have found the lyrics naff. And even though Rick is no longer with us I am not going to say anything different. Really not sure why you think I am being insensitive. Do I have to like it purely because of the sentiments? or because Rick isn't here? Sorry but why do I need to sugar coat it? I am well aware of Rick's status (no pun intended) as a rock god and I am well aware of what he gave to Quo, but please don't tell me I am being disrespectful because I don't like the song. Far from being an arse I am giving my opinion on it which as far as I can tell I am entitled to do.

It would take a lot to find something worse than Mystery Island. Even Tommy's In Love is better than that.

I can understand the sentiments but again do you have to like any song written by a artist who has suffered or was suffering. I mean this song by Queen, Freddie wanted to make it to announce his love for his cat but it's the worst song on Innuendo. However it seems you are not allowed to knock it because Freddie was so ill when he made it.

All of them were written in a similar vein to this track. The songs you mention, for some reason, seem less schmaltzy than this new one. I dare say it's down to individual perception. I actually quite like One By One as well. The arrangement is terrific and it has a lovely, haunting melody. I wouldn't necessarily agree that Without You was written in the same vein as any of them. I wonder if what we've heard is the big production version rather than the first band recording. Certainly sounds like it with the strings and all that.

I'm pretty sure Rick wouldn't have written something like this in the 70's. He hadn't developed his sweet tooth yet I was merely talking about his voice. Recording this now was way beyond his vocal range and ability. Someone stepping on a cats tail springs to mind (sorry, Rick). And yep, The Lord Flasheart - schmaltzy describes it perfectly

Listened to it once today and it's definitely beginning to grow on me even although I'm still not that keen on the vocal.
The opening bars sound like something from Aquostic1 to my ears and that's either a good or a bad thing depending on your point of view.
Some kudos to get the first airing of this on Radio2 and Ken Bruce. Lots of artists would love to have that kind of exposure.

To be fair, if you accepted Johns opinion instead of questioning it, there wouldn't be the need for any of this. It doesn't really come down to the history behind a particular song, some people will like it and some won't. Regarding the If it was a Rossi vocal it would be torn apart, I can see why he said that to be honest. As for the track, I quite like it but it's hardly a classic.
