The white telecaster topic has somehow turned into a Rossi bashing thread.
How did that happen?

And my point is....why change a quo icon when you can afford not to. I've been a fan since the 70s as well and was used to Francis playing the green one on stage. He did use others as well though and we knew that in the studio he rarely played it and why should he ? He loved the sound of various guitars and we loved the music. To me it's as simple as that. As long as he plays the music I like I couldn't care less how his guitar looks or what he wears on stage. And I assume if he feels comfortable with the instrument he can more concentrate on the playing. I know that Francis has stated more than once that he simply considers the guitar the tool for his work and maybe that's why he changed the pick-ups and whatever before as well - to suit his changed perception how it should sound/can be played. Fans from the 60s on could've got very upset when he decided to change the colour from sunburst to green. Francis has always considered the guitar an instrument to make music with - not a symbol or a Quo icon. He drilled a hole in it even (for whichever purpose ?). That was OK for you though I guess, because that's how the guitar looked when you got into the band, while in reality it was just one look of many - and just one guitar among many. The marketing concentrating on the two crossed teles only was invented when the band reformed anyway, if I remember correctly, but maybe this considering them icons is a consequence from that. True it was never part of a grand plan that Rick and Francis both used Telecasters. They just fell into them so to speak, Francis had that guitar he used on Matchstick men. It fell apart and had to get two cheap guitars quickly, they happened to be Telecasters. One sunburst model became the iconic green one. Rick used a Tele too in the early days but swapped it for an SG as he prefered the sound. He could have easily have stuck with them over the years but he found the White Tele in Scotland and liked it's feel and then stuck with that. Did fans go up in arms when Alan stopped using the Mustang bass in the early 80s and started using the Kramer and Travis Bean basses. I never heard of any complaning.

No, because the sound remained the same .. or because nobody noticed ? Bass players just aren't that important in the grand scheme of things (at least with most bands). I know I neither noticed a change of instrument nor a change of sound. I'm not even sure I noticed the change of bass player (or drummer) when I saw the new line-up for the first time .

Bass players aren't that important ?! Nobody noticed ?!!!! You never noticed the change of bass player ?! Its opinions such as these, which I strongly disagree with, which often gets a very direct response from me,, and then I get told off ,, so I best not state why I think your opinions on the above are totally wrong had I ?!! These are actually not opinions, but facts. I can't for the life of me remember whether I noticed there was a new bass player and drummer with the band at the Loreley gig. I've no memory of noticing a change in personnel and I wouldn't have known about it, as I had fallen out with the band at the start of the 80s. I didn't buy youth magazines any more or went to gigs. So how could I have known ? The Loreley gig was the first in 5 years and meant as a treat for me after my car crash in January. I'm not able to hear the differences in bass playing between Rhino and Alan, it's simple as that. I did notice that Alan wasn't able to play the synchrone lead part during the reunion gigs in 4500x - but that's about it. And I didn't say that nobody noticed, but that less people (people like me) will notice a change of bass (sound). I know others appreciate bass runs and suchlike things, but my hearing is obviously not musically accomplished enough for it and I'm guessing that goes for most fans at gigs.

I think I know what Ricks take on this would be, guitars are made to be played, not hung on walls and admired. Good point. Richie it is then. Here-here👍

Well in that case, please allow me to state my own facts with regards to this I could hear the difference between Alan & Rhino,, both fine bass players but with differing styles, so to me it was very noticeable. Alan had more stage presence than Rhino ever had or will have, so it was very noticeable Alan was no longer on stage Bass players, in most cases, and especially regarding SQ ARE highly important to the overall sound for me. Rhino has more stage-presence than Lancaster ever had. And he is, friendly spoken, the better bassplayer. And yes, for me bassplayers are very important either. Opinions.

Spinning around like a ing ballet dancer is not quite what I would call stage presence... and neither is walking around the stage bobbing his head like a chicken. Alan flew across that stage when he was still in his fit state of health, dodging tangled leads whilst doing so... I'll say what I always say and that is that Alan is the better bass player no doubt about it. This is what Alan plays for Mystery Song.... Rhino stays on the one note of each chord (simple and boring)

I've no idea who's the better bass player .. What I know is, that Rhino is the Status Quo bass player and Alan hasn't been for 30+ years. Both belong to Quo and both have played their part in Quo history though. Oh yep, and both can't sing on record (seems a rule with Quo's bass players )

Oh yep, and both can't sing on record (seems a rule with Quo's bass players ) Alan can't sing on record ?!, ok then, if you say so then it has to be right It's right for me - again this strange concept called 'taste' - and probably the main reason why I skip as near as all songs sung by him. Live is different though. At least at the reunion gig and on recordings from the tours I've very much enjoyed his singing. I was actually surprised how much I liked it. It didn't change my perception of his singing on studio albums though.

All I know is that Alan's way of playing is different and sounds different from Rhino's. It's thanks to the three guitars and the drums plus the three of them singing that the Quo sound was 'created' all those years ago. It's what made Quo. I like Rhino's singing and playing on the Rhino's Revenge album. I think his voice suits the songs on the album. Agreed Inna, may I add that technically Rhino is the better bass player, but I do feel Alan's style as more suited to Quo, but they both have very differing styles, and both are good bass players True, lets turn this on it's head. Would EVH be a good lead guitarist for Quo no. Yep he is better than Francis but like the others it suited the music Quo made. I don't have a problem with Rhino love some of his songs. I prefer the 3 vocalist era of the band but still like the later stuff is that allowed ?

Ah I see, so yer implying you have taste and I don't, something you have mentioned or implied before, ok, I geddit now I don't see how she is implying that!!! Snakelady is saying that Alan's singing (on record) isn't to her taste.......she's isn't saying that other people shouldn't like it or that people who like his singing don't have taste! She's stating her point of view, not that she's right and others are wrong. We don't all have to see things the same. You still struggle with this concept don't you

Back to the Telecaster. I notice that Lyndsays article mentions that a guitar was taken by the executors of his will. Was that the White Telecaster we don't know. I hope it's not been seized and is to be auctioned off to cover some debts. It was strange that it was not at the funeral and a replica was used. Hopefully it will remain in the family.

When the will is read/made public, then they will bequeath it to whoever Rick wished it to go to.
At least they know where it is, it's secure and that's the most important thing.

But remember Ive... to any of his sons he was their Dad and not some elevated hero ! If I was RPJ for example I would want to hold it and maybe even plug it in and play it every day to feel close to my dad as part of my grieving process. At least until I had closure. I don't think you could call that sacrilege.

I hope that whoever gets it looks after it - The truss rod will need to be kept adjusted regularly, if it's going to be kept with the strings tensioned. This reminds me, I need the truss rod on my replica adjusting... There's a lot of tension on a neck with a set of 14s on it.

For his son to keep it as a memento is one thing, but to take it out and gig with it doesn't seem right. It's like when I saw Joe Bonamassa was playing Rory Gallagher's Strat a few years ago. Something about it just seemed wrong to me.

Hmm article today says that Lyndsay would not let them have his guitar. So that's why a replica was used at his funeral. RICK Parfitt’s widow took his beloved guitar away days before his funeral, meaning a replica had to be knocked up as a centrepiece, it is claimed. The Status Quo legend had wanted the custom-made white Fender Telecaster to take pride of place at the service. A friend said “Lyndsay pushed for his memorial to take place in Spain but everyone told her where to go." “Taking the guitar was the last straw, although she insists the situation was a misunderstanding.” www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/2782597/rick-parfitts-dying-wish-almost-wrecked-after-widow-he-wrote-out-of-will-took-his-treasured-axe-and-a-replica-had-to-made-for-funeral/Now as we know she said the executors asked for a guitar she did not say she had given it to them. If she has got it and then auctions it. There will be some Quo fans who will be very angry. Of course it could all be a misunderstanding and the papers have exaggerated everything would not be the first time. However it was obvious that it was a replica at his funeral.
