One of my least favourite FF albums, has some good tracks on it like Fine Fine Fine, slow train, break the rules and lonely man. I don’t really play it that much. I do enjoy Backwater and Don’t think it Matters. Like Backwater, not a massive fan of Don’t Think It Matters, I do find it interesting regarding the difference in Quo fans taste. I’m glad we aren’t all the same, but it does vary a lot at times. Glad someone’s enjoying going back through the catalogue, how about the Party album next ?

The Quo album is part of that Holy Trinity for me; Piledriver, Hello!, Quo. Where the band could do not wrong. But then I suppose I lived through it. I didn't discover these albums in retrospect. If you were a Quo fan from 1973 onwards, these albums were and have remained, almost religious in significance. I'm not overstating it at all, am I? Yeah, get the Party album on. The fact that they released an album of such quality more than 30 years after these others is some achievement in my book.

I respect the fact you feel that way, I would have picked the album up some 10 or 11 years later as was only 4 when it came out. I don’t understand why I’m not a big fan of it, as in the songs I’ve chosen it covers over half the album in length. I was going to suggest it may be because it’s dominated by the Lancaster/Parfitt writing partnership, but I’ve just checked again and it’s approx 50 / 50 between them and Rossi / Young. I’m confused now so I think I’ll go and have a lie down I may have to get the album out next week to check. Actually I just thought why a holy trinity, what changed after that to not include on the level and blue for you albums?

Actually I just thought why a holy trinity, what changed after that to not include on the level and blue for you albums? That's a valid question actually. For some reason, those three albums are perceived as a sort of artistic pinnacle. Probably more so by people who were there than those who found them in retrospect. On The Level, although still brilliant, was seen as a step in a different, maybe more commercial or melodic direction. It also had 10 tracks instead of what had been the customary 8 and there was no closing 'epic' song. Mystery Song changed that with the next album but it was a very brief step backwards with only maybe Breaking Away and Coming And Going paying slight homage to the past in that way. Wild Side of Life also rubber stamped the way things were going and was really first out the blocks. That was seen, certainly by me, as the real sea change before Rockin' came out. Quo remained superb. But unquestionably different. And I think more flawed. I started to hear tracks that I wasn't keen on. That hadn't happened before. Then again, maybe I was just growing up Anyway, here endeth the opinionated ramblings

I have put the Quo album on today and the majority of it is very good.
I just don’t like Drifting Away and Don’t Think It Matters, they bring the album down a lot for me.
I like the rest a lot

Francis always refers to it as their 'rock' album. Or something like that. But with Fine Fine Fine and Lonely Man on there, I'm not so sure. It's no more 'rock' in the sense he means than, say, Quid Pro Quo or Heavy Traffic. No other Quo album sounds quite like it, that's for sure. It's fairly unique in that respect. Drifting Away, for me, is over-fuzzed but it didn't bother me at the time. However, I'd agree it is the weakest track. But I'm splitting hairs. I didn't appreciate that Tommy's In Love (twice!) , Sorry and 1000 Years lay ahead of me

Party album today, Gotta get up and go is a cracking tune. Good album for me I listened to The Quo and Party albums this week as well. I didn’t realise how much I liked the album, Familiar Blues, GGUAG, This Is Me, Nevashooda, The Bubble, the title title track and Belavista Man are all great tracks. I think this is a good example of how Quo can do more commercial or slightly different tracks incredibly well.

I've always been a huge fan of the Party album since I first heard it. It doesn't get a particularly good press amongst Quo fans, probably as it was a slightly more commercial sounding and varied follow-up to Heavy Traffic. I don't think the band were even that impressed with it at the time if my memory of the FTMO issue covering the album is correct. But I love it. It's a go-to album for me. I've said it often enough; everything from 1999 onwards apart from the covers albums has been at least very good. And one or two have been outstanding. In my opinion, quite a golden period

I finally picked up the (unimaginative) 2CD reissue of that on my visit to Berlin, so that'll probably be the first Quo album I'll listen to after a long pause. I think the last one I did was Ain't Complaining and its second disc. TPAOY never did much for me, but who knows - I don't want my opinions to be set in stone.

Today for the first time in ages I've got If You Can't Stand the Heat playing. I used to really like Again and Again but today it starts off sounding like a plodder and even though it gathers some steam its not sounding as good as it used to. Giving Up My Worrying is kind of ok Teach You to Love Me has terrible lyrics and is just Quo by numbers. Someone Show Me is decent if a little depressing Long Legged Linda - love it Oh What a Night - love it too Accident Prone - one of my top 3 Quo songs and quite possibly my no.1 Stones - no just no Let Me Fly - pretty good Like a Good Girl - enjoyable though not amazing.
Kind of confirms my belief that it is definitely near the bottom of the pile for Quo albums. Still enjoyed it though.

Ah now onto Ma Kelly's. In the throws of shedding their 60s sound and succeeding to a great extent. Lots to enjoy here.

Gees Need Your Love is a mix of grunge before it existed and I guess what they call stoner music. Way ahead of its time.

If You Can't Stand The Heat was my first major disappointment as a Quo fan. But everything is relative I suppose. I actually really liked a good half dozen tracks on it. It's just I was used to liking everything! I'm still keen on Oh, What A Night! and I've always loved Like A Good Girl. But finding less lively and, frankly, bland songs such as I'm Giving Up My Worrying and Someone Show Me Home - on the A-Side! - was a real shock at the time But to balance that out, I thought Francis's solo version of Someone Show Me Home was really good. And I have no idea why because they're not exactly a million miles apart.
