FH....I loved Marillion with Fish and regret never seeing them back in the day....the live from Loreley dvd is superb. Those albums with Fish are amongst my favourite albums of all time. I bought the first single they did with Steve Hogarth but then lost interest. However over recent months I have been checking them out on YouTube and have been tempted to see them next year....Steve Rothery is a great guitarist I just struggle to build up any excitement over Hogarth.

U2 in Manchester last night. WOW What a gig....I’ve seen them a number of times before but this stage show is something else. I know they ain’t everyone’s cup of tea on here but without doubt the best gig I’ve ever attended by any band. Only downside still in Manchester as train back to Birmingham isn’t until 18:05. Oh well a few drinks it is then.... loved all their early stuff but lost interest after the joshua tree. Loz I know where you’re coming from....I lost interest at Achtung Baby but got back into them with How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. Live they are still amazing.

Admittedly, h is a bit of an acquired taste. I initially had my issues with his vocals too. But I got used to it (to quote the jaw-droppingly good "Living with the Big Lie" ) and now I think he is a great vocalist. Anybody who can sing such complicated lines as the chorus of "Dry Land" has my full respect. I see him as a cross between Bono and Mark Hollis. The first single post-Fish was "Hooks in You", right? That's hardly representative of the band in any period (h even said he feels like apologizing for it ) and the general consensus is that this incarnation only truly became an entity of its own on the concept album "Brave" in 1994. I wouldn't recommend anyone to simply go see the band if they've never heard any of the material they play these days. Some of it may immediately resonate but a lot of it is complex and deep and benefits from repeated listening. Steve Rothery does some solo tours at times, too - with a singer who's apparently pretty good at doing the Fish songs. Not that I've heard them, mind.

Not sure why but I could never get into that one. But I think Pop is a masterpiece. I still play it regularly.

14 Oct - Joanne Shaw Taylor @ Harpenden 28 Oct - Dr. Feelgood @ Harpenden 16 Dec - an up and coming youngster from Liverpool called Paul. @ O2. Edit: I haven't decided yet, but I fancy seeing the Counterfeit Stones performing "Street Fighting Sham" in Hertford in November. The 'up and coming youngester' was rather good. He'll go far. Paul McCartney...I saw Bryan Adams in May this year and he was very good. As he's coming around again in February, my brother-in-law and I will be seeing him again.

Am going to see the Quireboys Unplugged at the joiners in Southampton this Friday. Bl00dy hell, there's a blast from the past No gigs lined up at the moment. The first one is Francis in March. Is that a gig? Probably not. KT Tunstall is playing the same theatre early next year. I missed her last time so I'd like to see her. It's getting someone to go with me that's proving the issue. Mrs Mortified is less than keen to say the least

The singer with Steve Rothery is Martin Jakubski, he sings in the Marillion tribute band, StillMarillion, who are very good, and generally only perform material from the Fish albums. He also sings with Maiden Scotland, obviously an Iron Maiden tribute, and he did a guest vocal on one of my bands, songs, Just When I Wasn't Lookin' which is available to stream in the usual places -

John Mayall in Stuttgart 85th anniversary tour! 85th anniversary ? Makes Quo look like spring chicks With venues in all shapes and sizes you do get quite a lot of interesting acts locally. Must be nice not having to reach them by car (especially since Stuttgart is littered with speed traps ).

None .. so far. Went to our usual string of chamber music concerts during the winter season, but that's finished now. Planning to get tix for Quo on 19th Sept., but haven't bought them yet.

Nothing imminent here either. I fancied going to see Garbage in July but, once again, I'm all alone on that one

June is a busy month for me gig wise! Spice Girls at the Etihad this coming Saturday. Not really my cup of tea, was the wifes xmas present. At £150 a ticket I shall do my best to enjoy it. Then I start a run of three nights at the Manchester Arena later in the month: 26 June - Eagles 27 June - Quo/Skynyrd (I refuse to put them the other way round) 28 June - Westlife Funny how it's panned out that way, we've ended up booking a hotel and stopping over. Manchester isn't far for us but it seemed daft to keep travelling back and forth every night. Still on the look out for someone to go and see when we're in New York in July, sadly we land a few days after Billy Joel plays Madison Square Gardens

I actually wonder how many are going to leave after Quo ? I'd so love to see Billy too. He's one of my favourite acts. Did you know that his dad is from Vienna and Billy still speaks passable German ?
