Anyone remember this? I actually bought the single because Rick was in the video! Bit sad Although I quite liked it. Not sure if Rick played on the track or not. Someone may enlighten me. Roger Taylor on drums as well.

He is best known for three UK TV series; Auf Wiedersehen Pet in the 80's and Crocodile Shoes (which spawned a whole hit album) and Spender in the 90's. I think this was his first ever single and it was quite a big hit here. I just remember seeing Rick in the video and thinking, "hold on; I now have to have that!"

Thought the song was OK but think I preferred him as Oz in Auf Wiedersehen Pet.
Was this song produced by Roger Taylor and hence Rick's involvement as they were big pals at the time?
snakelady , Jimmy Nail is an English actor but for a spell, he fancied himself as a singer too.
PS. I was typing very slowly as mortified was touch typing his reply

The album ( Take It Or Leave It) was produced by Roger Taylor so if the single came from that, he would have done. I no longer have the physical single kicking about; it's in the house in Spain so I can't check. I thought Jimmy Nail was OK, both as an actor and a singer. He had a huge UK hit (no.1 in fact) with Ain't No Doubt in the early 90's and I loved that.

Confession time..I actually have quite a few Jimmy Nail cds and it's all Rick's fault for appearing on the single above. Bought the album like it and carried on from there, up to his Crocodile Shoes 2 album. Even saw him at the Hammersmith Odeon in concert. Ain't No Doubt is excellent, as is Big River and my favourite is Calling Out Your Name.
Ok I shall now go stand in the corner!

The 2nd series if I remember correctly was about it all falling apart for him. He did some really good stuff. I've got a signed copy of the Big River cd which is probably worth 50p..lol

I also noticed Michael Elphick acting in the video. I don't remember that. It was actually 1986, @inna. I suspect Rick was at a loose end

I too liked Jimmy Nail and I wish we still had TV series of the quality of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.

It's quite possible that Rick was broke at the time of recording and his mates gave him the gig to help him out.

I Love a bit of Jimmy, I have a couple of his albums and even went to see him live around the time of crocodile shoes. Big River was always my favourite of his. I believe Rick did the session as Roger Taylor was producing the track or album. I seem to remember reading it somewhere. Good Call mortified

I think Big River is a great song, it's a song with a story and I like that.
There's a bit of resilience, pride and defiance in there.
Never knew Mark K played on it. He's a Geordie too so it makes sense I suppose.

Wi aye?
It was one of the later ones but I can't remember which.

I think it was the one where they put the Teeside Transporter bridge up in Arizona.
Just goggled it....it was series 3 from 2002.
"However, the closing credits were accompanied by Mark Knopfler's song "Why Aye Man", taken from his album The Ragpicker's Dream".

And the guy who co-wrote Jimmy Nail’s Crocodile Shoes, Tony McAnaney , also co-wrote Going Nowhere from Thirsty Work

Rick played on it. He wasn't anymore broke than usual at the time. Roger Taylor dumped Rick as a friend soon afterwards, although they didn't have a falling out. Rick felt it was due to the fact that Queen was so much bigger than Quo.

If that's the reasoning as to why the friendship came to an end, I think that's shallow of Roger, very shallow indeed.
If a friend is a friend only because of how successful or how rich you are, then I reckon you'd be better off without that "friend".

I'm not sure anything can be taken at face value, particularly back in those days. Sometimes I get the impression that everyone in the entire industry in the 80's was a mess. These were days of hedonism and excess. Possibly more than any other decade.

I thought I'd stick this up coz I really liked it at the time and it's been mentioned in the thread. A no.1 hit for the big Geordie. With a slight nod to his mate Sting in the lyrics.
