So Hello beat Piledriver, and here we are for the next head to head album poll. Quo vs On the Level. Amazingly Quo's 7th & 8th albums, which as we know continued their run of success.
After being a little less bluesy and a little more commercial with Hello, SQ decided to ramp it up with the Quo album and go for mainly out and out rock. I think the album went to number 2 in the UK chart and Break the Rules went to number 8. Then came OTL, which again was a bit more commercial than it's predecessor, went to number 1 in the UK chart, and spawned Quo's only official UK number 1 single, Down Down.
Cast your vote and let us know your thoughts and memories.
QUO Backwater (Parfitt/Lancaster) Just Take Me (Parfitt/Lancaster) Break The Rules (Rossi/Young/Parfitt/Lancaster/Coghlan) Drifting Away (Parfitt/Lancaster) Don't Think It Matters (Parfitt/Lancaster) Fine Fine Fine (Rossi/Young) Lonely Man(Parfitt/Lancaster) Slow Train (Rossi/Young)
On the Level Little Lady (Parfitt) Most Of The Time (Rossi/Young) I Saw The Light (Rossi/Young) Over And Done (Lancaster) Nightride (Parfitt/Young) Down Down (Rossi/Young) Broken Man (Lancaster) What To Do (Rossi/Young) Where I Am (Parfitt) Bye Bye Johnny (Berry)

I've started us off by voting for On the Level.
I think I will always lean slightly towards Quo's poppy side, although I have learned in later years to love the more bluesy stuff. It's a funny one this, because although I'm not the biggest fan of Drifting Away, there aren't any songs on the Quo album that I don't like; and I absolutely love Backwater, JTM and Slow Train....yet On the Level wins comfortably. It has always been in my top 3 Quo albums and one that I still often turn to these days. The run of the first 6 songs, in my opinion is unbeaten by any Quo album ever. Most of the Time, Over and Done, and Nightride have grown into some of my all time favourites, and Down Down has always been there.
Over to you.

I voted for Quo, only because I love the raw sound to that album, for me, thats how Quo music should sound. Both albums have 1 track I am not that keen on, I would say also, that personally the tracklisting on the Quo album is slightly better than the track listing on the OTL album, but only just,,,so, like I said, my vote was based, mainly, purely on how it sounded.

Quo for me. I think the sound and production of On The Level is better but it's not enough to defeat the sheer raw energy of Quo. And it doesn't have Slow Train
Incidentally, are we just doing studio albums here? Will Blue For You be up against Rockin'.... for example? Interesting.

Yes, I decided that I will do 'original' studio albums against each other, and then have a separate category for live albums and another category for covers albums. I never see the point of comparing apples against pears....compare 2 apples!
So it should work out like this;
- BFY v RAOTW
- IYCSTH v WYW
- WYP v NTL
- 1982 v BTB
- ITAN v AC
- PR v RTYD
- TW v UTI
- HT v TPAOY
- ISOTFC v QPQ
- And the Aquostics can go up against each other.
I might leave out Bula Quo, as there is nothing to put it up against, and anyway, it's the only soundtrack album Quo have done (unless anyone's got any ideas)?
In my opinion, Perfect Remedy v Rock 'til You Drop, and Thirsty Work v Under the Influence are both mismatches, and I would prefer to have PR v TW and RTYD v UTI (in terms of styles) but I'm not sure I should take that liberty!?!
I suppose the big question with RAOTW v BFY would be, do I allow people to take the RAOTW remix into account (or can I actually stop them), or should we just decide based on the original RAOTW format????
Anyway, all of that is for another week......back on with Quo and OTL

Quo = demolishes OTL, not that it's difficult!

OTL for me, and as I said in the last round, that may have changed by tomorrow.. Give me a fence and I'll sit on it.

On the level for me. The album that sent Quo Stratospheric and a number 1 single. Brilliant songwriting and catchy melodies. Francis Rossi’s finest hour !

Neck and neck it would appear. I thought it might be.

Neck and neck it would appear. I thought it might be. Going by how the unpopular songs album polls have been going I'd have expected a clear win for OTL. OTL so far has been the only album which as near as all participants agreed has a as near as perfect side. On the other hand Quo received merely very few 'none' votes. Well, the result isn't set in stone as it's merely 12 votes so far ..

On The Level for me.
I don't particularly like the Quo album. Don't like the sound nor the majority of the songs either.
I much prefer On The Level. I said the other day that I don't skip any of the tracks and that doesn't apply when I listen to Quo.
I think OTL is in my top 5 of all time favourite albums and Quo isn't.

Hmm, the more commercial side of Status Quo is pulling away. Who'd have thought?

Whilst of course I respect and understand that's your'e opinion, I'm stunned ! You don't like the sound ?, that must mean you prefer the polished studio sound over the live/raw sound, would you not agree that Quo's music is best heard live, as no studio album, (with the Quo album being the only exception in its closeness to the live sound), can recreate that live/raw feel to Quo's sound. For me, Quo sounded best in a live setting, that's how their music was meant to be heard

Don’t mean to jump on here just my opinion on it ! I love the QUO album as well. Ricks best album for his chops imo on fire. The only very small criticism I give it is too many Alan vocals on it for me. Just my personal preference for either Francis or Ricks vocals. I understand Alan’s vocals are Rockier it’s just I’ve never been a fan of the tone in his voice that’s all. Mind you Hammersmith 2013 his voice has vastly improved due to age and less gruffness .

I always thought the guitars on Quo were over-fuzzed in many places, especially on Drifting Away. Having said that, it is still a fabulous album for me. Break The Rules sounded like it was recorded and/or produced differently but there's no acknowledgement of that anywhere on the sleeve notes. Although it is the only song where all 4 members plus Bob Young get a writing credit. There may be something in that, there may not. At the time, the music press were raving about the production values on it because most didn't think them capable but, in retrospect, there may have been an element of record label pushing on that front to get the album some different attention instead of the usual 'same old same old from Quo' critical approach. These match-ups of albums lend themselves to criticism of the one you don't prefer but, at the end of the day, we're talking about Quo's golden artistic peak here with all of them. We may prefer one to another but it's all relative to the era in which they were recorded.

I can understand what you say above, personally, for me, it was always Rick & Alans vocals I preferred, to me, both vocals suited the heavier Quo music, that's NOT to say that some of Rossi's vocals aren't good, because they are.I have always believed that Rick & Alan's vocals suited the heavier Quo material, whilst Rossi's vocals suited the poppier (?) Quo material Just down to personal preference again

I fell in love with Francis' vocals as soon as I heard In My Chair. That nailed everything for me.

I like what I like and as mentioned, I don't particularly like the Quo album, that's all, it's only my opinion.
I'd rather listen to the Whatever You Want album as opposed to the Quo one.
If I'm in the minority about my thoughts on the Quo album, that's ok. I can live with it

OTL has better quality songs for me. Quo, while a good album, lacks something.

As do I re: some opinions on here. So, can I assume then you prefer the polished Quo sound to the rawer Quo sound ?

I've said what I prefer.
You can make of my choices what you will.
Has everything got to be black/white?

I love both albums! Some classic all time favourites on both. But Quo all the way for me if I could only choose one album to take to my desert island....
