Can I take it this isn't just a re-release of the triple CD box, The Early Works, from 1990 or The Early Years from 1992? Although there are 5 CD's here, I imagine there will have to be a crossover of tracks. (I'm also a lazy ba$tard and copied and pasted )

Those compilations both also include material from the Ma Kelly's and Dog eras, which would be outside the scope of a 1966-1969 set. My hope is that this contains the first two albums in proper order, in mono and stereo, as well as all the relevant bonus material in a logical order. Of course there will be crossover, but if you're gonna reissue this stuff - and by God it's been reissued a lot - it would be nice to see a release that does it right for once. Edit: Having seen the tracklisting now, I'm feeling a bit honored that there is indeed something surviving from my ideas, namely the "Before Status Quo" disc. Here's the tracklisting with a packshot courtesy of theprogfather from the other board. chalkys.com/products/status-quo-the-early-years-1966-69-5cd-box-set-cd-pre-sale-15-03-2024

It's a nice looking set and probably worth buying for that alone.
It's interesting this thing about re-issuing mono recordings. Not just Quo of course. I've personally never really seen the point. They're pretty much unlistenable these days given the advances in sound technology since the early 70's. I can appreciate owning an original mono release because I have a couple. But it's really just part of the collection and serves no other purpose.
This is not an era that does anything for me from a musical standpoint but it does look like it pulls everything together in the one place and is worth having for that reason. A comprehensive record if you like 👍

They're pretty much unlistenable these days given the advances in sound technology since the early 70's. I can appreciate owning an original mono release because I have a couple. But it's really just part of the collection and serves no other purpose. I think it's absolutely vital to include the mono mix of Picturesque Matchstickable Messages. There was no stereo mix back in the day, just a fake stereo one (and even the stereo remix still includes two fake stereo mixes). The mono mix is what the band or the producer approved and what was released back in the day. For Spare Parts, it's more for completeness' sake but keeping in mind that a lot of people were still listening to mono in those days, I think it also has historical value. And while stereo had evolved quite a bit by the late 60s, a lot of older stereo releases are a far harder listen especially on headphones as opposed to the original mono ones. John Lennon famously hated the stereo version of "Revolution" and said it sounded like ice cream without the heaviness of the mono mix. That isn't an isolated occurrence; many stereo mixes from the 60s can sound quite separated and diluted. It's a nice looking set and probably worth buying for that alone. This is not an era that does anything for me from a musical standpoint but it does look like it pulls everything together in the one place and is worth having for that reason. A comprehensive record if you like 👍 Of course, some stuff was already found to be missing ("Hello, I Love You", a couple of alternate mixes). As is always the case. But then again, the idea was - after the start of the Vertigo/Polydor deluxe editions - to give some love to the early work, and I think it will complement those deluxe editions rather nicely. (I looked back and found that the first ideas that evolved into this set are from 2017! The mind boggles.)
