So which one is it for you ? Got to say I've loved RAOTW right from the start, thin sound and all - after all, that was the first tour I saw the band live. So while I quite like WYW, it'll always be RAOTW for me, and even more so now after John Eden's remix.

Both mediocre after all the previous albums. But WYW just edges it. I love Breaking Away.

Struggling to separate them. I know that Whatever You Want was seen as some sort of return to form at the time (and it certainly was after If You Can't Stand The Heat) but, like snakelady, I really liked the Rockin' album when it came out. So I've plumped for liking them both equally. Like tramper, Breaking Away could have edged it for me because it is a real gem. But other than that, I find it too close to call.

RAOTW for me, basically it was my first Quo album and has always been my favourite. However that said WYW is an amazing album with not a bad track on it.

As much as I really like RAOTW, it was the first Quo album I ever bought and does hold a special place...Whatever You Want has everything I want from a Quo album. It has fast songs, it has slow songs, it has shuffles, it has long songs, and a part from LOAI (in itself a really good song) they are all rock songs. In general I find WYW to be a slower paced album than most Quo albums (like RTYD) and this gives it a slightly more bluesy feel. Breaking Away was the last classic long song they did with changes of tempo and different riffs and rhythms imo; I love it.
I love WYW album, it is in my top 3.

The outro to Living On An Island on the album version is truly a wonder to behold. And it's the one part of the song you never get to hear because it was edited for the single. It's a magnificent piece of music just begging to be sampled. But no one other than sad old Quo fans like us know it exists. I suppose much the same could be said for the full length versions of Mystery Song and Down Down. Quo rarely get credited for a lot of things because they have always had a tendency to let others (i.e. record companies) pi$$ about with their material to suit the radio. Imagine I'm Mandy Fly Me or Bohemian Rhapsody being cut down to 2½ minutes. They stuck to their guns and more power to 'em

Got to say I'm surprised WYW is that clear in the lead. For me the rock songs just aren't that convincing on the album (BA, CRWM/RO), I've always hated WYW don't like YSF for the lyrics and yep the outro from LOAI is great, but I don't need the rest of it. I mean the rest is good and I do have skip tracks on nearly all Quo albums, but they're more than on RAOTW and not enough outstanding tunes.
What's interesting from my POV is, that while on previous albums I considered Alan's contributions the weakest, on WYW they're the best (including bonus track Hard Ride).

Is a difficult one, I think I just give it to WYW, just seems a bit more solid with, even allowing for the recent remix, better production than Rockin’. While the band stretch out a bit more for me with, Come Rock With Me/Rockin’ On and Breakin Away.

Am I right in remembering that the American version of WYW (on Now Hear This) has the first part of the intro removed and starts with the duh du duh du shuffle part before the main riff? PS. I do agree with you about the LOAI outro...it is awesome! They would never do that these days....they would still write the riff but then they would fade it out or sing over it.

Correct on both accounts, mate The Now Hear This version misses out Rick's intro and a long outro from Quo these days seems unlikely, songs being preferred to lengthier musical interludes or breaks. I guess we're just old fashioned

Rocking album for me, I like some of the tracks on WYW but there is something that doesn’t gab me overall as an album.

RATOW has a lot of good tracks, with a few regularly appearing in the set list.
WYW has... WYW.

To me there is no doubt, an album with a sound so bad it's almost impossible to listen to and released the same year as the magnificent Live album,( it was rather high expectations for the new album) compared to the WYW album which starts with one of all times great opening riffs and a sound that is absolutely spot on (imho) ...Well

Oddly enough, you rarely hear WYW properly on the radio. I don't know who lopped off the whole intro but it must be a widespread edit, since several stations use it. Basically it starts with the main riff...

A deliberate policy I think.

WYW by far for me. Love this album and not a bad track on it. A classic Quo album IMO. RAOTW is a very poor album. Everything from the songs to the production.

The worst tracks on the WYW album are the singles.
There are at least half a dozen tracks on RAOTW I never play anymore.
