If only this weren't a chronological poll !! Two of my favourite albums going head to head in the second round already .. So are you able to decide ? I think I'll go with 'both'

Hello! all day long seeing it's the greatest album ever made. By anyone. That's ever. Or did I say that? Incidentally, how is it chronological if it isn't paired with either Piledriver or Quo? Just being contentious

Just being contentious Is it not due to having defeated Piledriver in the previous round of Polls? So I assume is pitched against the winner of the Quo & On the Level poll. For me I think Hello just gets the nod, not a bad track on it, while I think On the Level has a couple of slight dips. Particularly the fact Hello ends with 4500 times, while, and I know it was a popular live track to end gigs, but On the Level does finish with a Chuck Berry cover. A bit of a climb down from the two previous album closers.

It's just that it isn't particularly special either. Every other track most certainly is.

Hello has more variety I think. OTL is by no means bad but it doesn't have 4500x

Not sure I'd go along with this, IMO OTL has a lot of variety - and the 1991 version of 4500x is far superior, despite it not being 'the original'.

Maybe we can agree on this: The original is brilliant for the creativity in its writing, the idea to come up with this song in the first place. The 1991 version is brilliant in its execution and sound. They, well, most notably Francis in this case, were simply far better musicians by then. So now that it does exist, I prefer the 1991 version .

Francis thinks it was a mistake to redo 4500x...

Francis thinks it was a mistake to redo 4500x... I read that in the new RTYD Deluxe cd notes. But it depends what he means, or what we think he means by his comments. Personally, I don't think he means that the recording was bad; more he now thinks 'why did we do that, why did we let ourselves get talked into re-recording old songs'. Just like he regrets doing 3 covers albums. But at the time David Walker was the manager and his business plan for the band was to do the AW, RTYD, DS, FITLC & Riffs. It's easy with the benefit of hindsight to say that you should have done things differently, but you make your best decision at the time. Also when you look back 10, 20, 30 years later, times have also changed. The music industry isn't the same now as it was then. Also, I take a lot of what Francis says with a pinch of salt. I suspect most people see things differently at 70 than they do at 40. I think it's a great recording in all aspects and am very glad they did it....and it helped the album get to number 10 in the UK, and probably helped sell some records to the older fans at the time. Nothing to regret imo.

Francis thinks it was a mistake to redo 4500x... That doesn't surprise me because he does comment a lot 'in retrospect'. Well, we all do that. People change. Well, normal people do I believe they re-recorded it because they were dropping it from the set. I remember Rhino commenting something to the effect that playing the full 20-odd minute version was like watching paint dry for all of them and they were fed up with it. So they got it out of their system, put down on record a studio version of the live rendition and left it behind. Till it resurfaced and segued into Rain much later on. Even on the reunion tour they didn't play a much longer version except when they chucked in a bit of Gotta Go Home which was a sort of token gesture to me. I'm a fan of the original and still prefer it but that's probably because of the age that I first heard it. It completely blew me away and, frankly, I've never got over it
