It’s a business thing, his studio still needs to make money.
He hires it out to other artists, Ginger Wildheart posted a couple of years ago that he was recording there.
It may be a cheaper rate than they would pay else where.
It may also cover fees of engineers or others . Dunno
I really don’t think it’s bad.

Francis charged £20,000 studio fee for the hire of his studio to record Backbone. Any thoughts on that? Who payed the bill?

On the face of it, it sounds a bit shabby. IF it's true obviously. But studio time is not cheap and this sounds like a half decent arrangement. Would anyone offer their studio for free even if it was to record an album by the band that they were a member of? Besides, who else has had the foresight (or funds) to build their own studio? Some people build studios; others buy Bentleys and boats Payment will have come out of the all round budget presumably and studio time will have been factored in from the beginning. I wonder if he charged himself for We Talk Too Much

I assume it was Edel that he charged the £20k to. Don't see a problem with that, they probably gave Quo a budget to record the album. They came back and said, it will be £20k in studio costs, £X amount for the engineer, £X for the producer, which again will have been Francis.

That makes sense .. and there are more costs like electricity, heating .. Actually it doesn't sound like such an awful lot, considering it takes weeks to record an album.

It's easy for us to sit at home and say it sounds like a lot, but most of us don't have a clue how the business works, and whether it is a lot or not. I'm sure there's a few people about who will tell us how it works and whether it sounds reasonable or not, and who is likely to have paid it (and where that figure has come from in the first place). Otherwise we are commenting on something that we know nothing about (even less than the things we normally comment on)!

Isn’t it funny how things just go round in circles in the world of finance.
All the companies are linked in some ways and on paper the money just goes round and round and then back and forth. 🙂

Who on earth is actually interested in this stuff? Who actually considers it there business? And who especially feels the need to go poking their noses into FRs accounts in order to publicly debate them!? Unbelievable!

It all depends on what you want to delve into for a bit of gossip. Personally, I couldn't care less if Francis charged for studio time or for cups of tea. Lets face it, they didn't have to use his facilities. They could have gone elsewhere. I have no idea how to access Francis's financial accounts. I wouldn't have thought they were in the public domain so maybe this is an inside job. Although Quo as a company would no doubt be a different matter. But I'm no finance expert. I have trouble counting the loose change in my pocket without having to start again. By the way, you read it and then responded. You are now a bona fide contributor to a thread you have no time for

Company accounts submitted to Companies House are freely available for anyone to view (wrongly in my opinion). However, I can fully understand potential clients / associates etc wanting to see this information to know the status of the business they intend to associate with. Outside of that why should folk poke around my business? Why on earth would people want to question that transaction within FR's company? Like I said before, its unbelievable. If folk are that interested in accounts maybe they should open a little business themselves and spend time looking at their own accounts, a launderette maybe? save folk from hanging out their dirty laundry!

I don’t have a problem with the charge. Building his studio in the first place would have personally cost him thousands Over the years. Updating to the latest equipment etc. So he made financial sacrifices for his interests. Others spent their’s in different ways. So rather than line some other studios pockets why not Francis. I don’t imagine any of them had a problem with it.

I knew that company accounts were available and in the public domain but I didn't realise that about individuals. Presumably it's only those that are registered at Companies House as opposed to someone sitting in the house translating documents into Slovakian and submitting the odd invoice.
Having been self-employed - and still partially so - I can't see any old Tom, Dick or Francis being able to see my self-assessment calculations on the HMRC website. GDPR regulations would take care of that.
The discussion has now morphed into how we know and why we'd even want to know as opposed to what we think of the business reasons behind it all.
Although not bothered one way or the other in this instance, I have to say if something is in the public domain then it is automatically up for scrutiny and discussion. That's just the way of the world.
Unfortunately.
