Was watching some old footage of Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce where they were described as the heaviest ever rhythm section? Thoughts...............

They probably started the ball rolling but what made Cream, I think, was Clapton's playing and Jack's voice. I'm not sure if I'd appreciate a 'heavy' rhythm section if there are good guitars in there but some are more noticeable than others; Geddy Lee and Neal Peart spring immediately to mind. And I guess Cliff Williams and Phil Rudd. I'm sure it's a ball ache for them but, essential as they are, the bassist and the drummer tend to be the less noticed members of most bands. They do tend to be appreciated more in a trio than, say, in a 4 or 5-piece band. Just the way of the world

Not sure i've ever found Baker and Bruce to sound heavy, unless it's meant in a heavy Neil from The Young Ones slightly lysergic, trippy kind of way!
A great rhythm section though but there's a lot of space in the intricate rhythms that gives it a lightness, whether or not the mood of the song is down or up.
With Quo it was almost always relentless, pounding, and heavy, just Quo music...no comparison. I'll go with Nuff n Spud then.

So agreed, I doubt there was ever a heavier rhythm section than Spud & Nuff
