Francis(an only original member) owns the name Status Quo ,so his band is called ...Status Quo. John (another original member ) don't own the name so he calls his band JC's Quo. Alan (another original member, together with a second original member John) none of them owns the name Status Quo,now apparently releasing some material under the name 'Alan Lancasters Bombers'. Neither of Johns or Alans bands are cover or tribute bands, they are just bands playing songs,in Johns case songs he performed during his successful years in the band Status Quo. Rick (a so so original member) may your soul rest in peace, is probably turning over in his grave if he could see this drivel. I had to quote myself here snakelady ,cos I'm a bit confused about the bit 'there's no need for insults and aggressiveness just because you don't share someone else's opinion.' I can't see anything of the above in my post but please explain.

I think the problem is, none of the options sufficiently describes John's band.
I didn't vote because I didn't know the answer...none of them sounded right. And to be honest, why do we need to categorise them!? They are who they are, and they do what they do, and that's what matters.
I actually think Quoincidence has come the closest to explaining this one. They aren't a tribute band because they contain a (past) member of the group. They could though be classed as a spin off group of the original....they contain a past member of Status Quo and they only play Status Quo songs. If that was one of the choices, I would vote for it.

it`s a bit like UB40, you had 1 band which split in 2 and they both go out as UB40. Not quite Loz - that more reminds me of Barclay James Harvest e.g. Quo never split into two bands .. Obviously a lot of emotions in this one - but please, Isaac Ryan, liberty and Quoincidence, there's no need for insults and aggressiveness just because you don't share someone else's opinion. So far, the majority does consider JCQ a tribute act, whether I or anybody else agrees (which I don't) or not .. Sorry SL

I think there's a major difference between Francis and John: Francis wrote most of the Quo songs hence most of what John plays, not the other way round.

Yep, spin off does sound like a sensible option. My only problem with it is, that all John has ever been was a player in Status Quo, but he didn't contribute by writing a single tune. Even Leon has a song on a Quo album now. Maybe - not being a musician myself - I'm underestimating the personal touch a drummer adds to a song though. With the songs written by others would he still come up with the drum parts all by himself or would the one who wrote it tell him how he'd expect John to play it ? If it were John all by himself I'd consider it a creative contribution to the Quo oeuvre and spin off would make more sense. What do we consider Jeff's and Matt's bands then ?

Spin-off seems like the proper description to me too. Although, you know, Rainbow and Whitesnake were both spin-offs of Deep Purple!

The last incarnation of Blackmore's Rainbow did play several DP songs and even in their heyday they had "Mistreated" in the set, and Whitesnake did an entire album of DP songs recently. But yeah, they of course developed their own respective identities with new material written by the band members and such.

It's all getting too complicated! Do they have to have a label.

Very interesting album Clear Air Turbulence. Possibly the most diverse from a former Deep Purple member that any of them has done. Although Blackmore's Night would have a case I suppose. Deep Purple did spawn quite a lot of success for various individuals no matter which version split up. And they all did

Considering John started playing with State of Quo years ago (a tribute band) and he has played with other tribute bands then yes to me JC's Quo is pretty much a tribute band and not a very good one from what I saw and heard at the Sub 89 in Reading recently (but that's another story). He's not so much paying tribute to himself but to the band he used to be in. If it was JC paying tribute to himself then it would be an evening of drumming, but it isn't. It is an evening of Status Quo music paying tribute to the time he was in the band.
Calling current Quo a tribute is very wrong considering that Andy and Rhino have been in Quo longer than either John or Alan. That very much establishes them as the band Status Quo. After all wasn't Motorhead always Motorhead just because Lemmy was there or would they be classed as a tribute band?
Not really sure why people get hung up on a band being called a tribute band. If you enjoy it that is main thing/
