Now here’s the thing.
Planet Rock are playing the first single , Backbone.
Ken Bruce played Liberty Lane again today.
I think Liberty Lane will be the second single, with Radio 2 playlisting it , with perhaps a couple of weeks on the b- list first in August before it gets A playlisted as we move closer to the album’s release and indeed the Hyde Park gig.
So, despite my initial puzzlement about Backbone being the first single, actually things could pan out very nicely.
Thoughts?

Like both tracks, prefer Liberty Lane, sounded good on the radio.

I've long since given up trying to understand marketing strategies from the Quo camp. You may be right, but then again, thoughts behind it might be completely different (given there are any thoughts behind it at all and it's not just a cock up ). Generally speaking whether they're named singles or not is so unimportant these days that it doesn't really matter. What'll matter more will be the number of songs play-listed. From experience we can assume that various tunes will make the A-list and may even stay there for more than a week (remember Better Than That ?) and I'm sure the album will be album of the week too sometime around the Hyde Park gig.

Maybe the are just covering different bases with different singles. Backbone covering the rock stations and liberty covering the more middle ground.
Good ploy really as it raises more awareness of the album over a wider area.
I would so love this album to enter at no.1 in the charts. 🙂

The 'issue' of Backbone as the first single (officially called a "single" on the Quo website by the way) isn't the worst idea, being the title track for a forthcoming album. Maybe a lesson learned from Heavy Traffic because the title track has been released as a single on each of the two albums to contain one since then. Get it out there, on it's own, create a bit of interest. After that, radio stations - particularly Radio 2 - seem to grab any number of tracks and stick them on whatever playlist they see fit. Put it this way, Radio 2's strategy will be completely different from Quo's so it will always remain an uneasy alliance. But it no doubt suits both parties as things stand at the moment. I slightly prefer Backbone to Liberty Lane but there isn't much in it. I don't think either sound exceptionally strong or memorable. Memorable in the sense that they're classics that is. They certainly stick in the memory for a while when you hear them. Someone in the 'biz' would no doubt argue that's the whole point But they're OK. Perfectly listenable and short term enjoyable. But I can't see me still playing them in, say, a year's time. That's not pessimism; just an observation. And I expect there to be stronger tracks dotted about the album. I can appreciate Cammy's slight puzzlement though. Play two songs live from the forthcoming album but release a different one as a single. I'm not convinced that's a particular strategy. I just think the title track might not suit the set list and the single does promote the album more. I'm quite optimistic actually. When I first heard the single, The Party Ain't Over Yet, I feared the worst. But very quickly it became one of my favourite albums. Bring on September

I slightly prefer Backbone to Liberty Lane but there isn't much in it. Liberty Lane sounds like Beginning or the End.
