Back from my three night residency at the Manchester Arena so thought I'd write a little gig report. Was there Wednesday for the Eagles, Thursday for Quo (and Skynyrd) and then Westlife on Friday. We stopped over Thu/Fri nights which meant we could have a few beers pre Quo. Got to the gig in good time, had heard good things about Massive Wagons so decided to check them out. This might sound harsh but I've no idea what the fuss is about, they made a lot of noise, not really sure what else to say, not my cup of tea. Was a fairly quick turnaround and then Quo came on to the oh so familiar drone. I was looking forward to the gig but the reality was even better, I thought they were truly superb. I'll go as far as saying it's the best I've heard the band in a long time. I bounced from start to finish, you could've wrung me out at the end of it, I was soaking. Crowd really got into it as well, even those with the LS t-shirts on. Shortened set obviously and it's very easy to have the usual grumbles. I'd happily never hear Rain, ROLD or Oriental ever again so to have all of them within an hour isn't really what I want but horses for courses. I absolutely love Liberty Lane, (as does the Mrs), didn't disappoint hearing it live. The other new track is not as strong IMO but again, we're all different. Rossi did some form of elongated intro to Down Down, maybe part of a new track? I might have dreamt it but I'm sure Richie did the outro solo for RAOTW which if memory serves me right, Rossi used to do, (who says Quo don't mix it up on stage)? LS up next, they got better towards the end of their set but in my (arguably biased) opinion, they were a distant second to Quo. Had a few beers back in the Travelodge after the gig and praise for Quo seemed universal. They really did smash it out of the park and I really do now hope we get a winter tour of sorts with a 'full' gig, if last week is anything to go by it'll be immense

Cheers, Marc I've read nothing but good things about Quo on this mini support slot with pretty much everyone saying they're on the money. A few gigs to back up the new album would be great; maybe short of a full blown tour. Nothing in the pipeline yet but you never know. If this release gets a bit of a push and sells a few, they might relent.

That's how I felt after the gig at the Kraftwerk last summer - and we didn't even get new songs, but the long set instead. They were brilliant ! Really looking forward to Ludwigsburg now ! The guys with the LS t-shirts, were they genuine fans, as in sang along most songs and not just SHA ? Edit: I'm merely asking because I've never ever come across a single LS fan .. .

I've just read the wiki article about LS. Quite the interesting and sad band history: Most members died either from a plane crash or from the consequences of a car crash later and the band basically ended in 77. As was to be expected, the album released after the plane crash was their most successful ever .. No band existed for about ten years till the brother of one of the victims formed a LS tribute band. - Which dropped the 'tribute' from their name a few years later and have been performing and recording as LS ever since. Or rather, in the meantime various members of this former tribute band have been replaced as well .. Nobody's bothered about all this, obviously (they've even become members of the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame ).

I knew about the plane crash, (as a result of watching Con Air bizarrely) but afterwards I was keen to know a bit more. Did I see something about one of the guitarists is still from the original line up and one used to be the drummer, left and returned several years later as a guitarist? Imagine the debates fans have on their message board/FB pages about 'real' LS and all that good stuff..........

Did I see something about one of the guitarists is still from the original line up and one used to be the drummer, left and returned several years later as a guitarist? Imagine the debates fans have on their message board/FB pages about 'real' LS and all that good stuff.......... Their album "Street Survivors" was in fact released 3 days before the 1977 plane crash in which singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, back-up singer Cassie Gaines (his sister), road manager Dean Kilpatrick, and the two pilots died. Gary Rossington, guitarist, is the only original member on this farewell tour. Drummer Artimus Pyle is still alive, but doesn't perform with Skynyrd anymore. Ricky Medlocke, who plays the lead guitar on "Freebird", was briefly their drummer around 1970/71 (when two drummers were utilised live) and before they became Lynyrd Skynyrd. He wrote, recorded, and sang on a few tracks which were posthumously released on the "Skynyrd's First....And Last" album of demos and out-takes in 1978. All other original members have since died, perhaps most famously guitarist Allen Collins in 1990, who suffered a long and tragic demise after the plane crash, his wife dying in 1980, and in 1986, he crashed his car, killing his then girlfriend and was paralyzed from the waist down. Third guitarist Ed King died last year after battling cancer, though had left the band two years prior to the plane crash. Original drummer Bob Burns, who was also not in the place crash, died in a car crash in 2015. Original pianist Billy Powell died of a heart attack in 2009, but was still performing with the tribute band, being one of only 2 original members at the time. Original bassist Leon Wilkeson died of chronic liver and lung disease in 2001, but was still performing with the tribute band until then. A couple of noteable members of the tribute band have also passed. Hughie Thomasson (guitarist) of a heart attack in 2007, and Ean Evans (bass) of a lung cancer in 2009. Tragedy seems to follow this band. There are other stories relating to band members' family and friends that are equally morbid and spooky. The tales around the band post-crash are like a soap opera. It seems like no-one really recovered. They lived fast, and recklessly. There is a Skynyrd proboards forum which is absolutely fascinating: skynyrdfrynds.proboards.com.

They were in at the start of the whole southern fried rock thing. I remember buying the Black Oak Arkansas album when I was at school ( High on the Hog) and it was pretty dreadful so I never really dabbled much after that except a brief excursion into Outlaws and Blackfoot territory in the early 80's. My mum and dad brought me back Skynyrd's Second Helping from America when they were over seeing relatives but I never took to it. Must have seen sis' idea coz she was with them so nice try. They do have a very tragic history which possibly adds to their attraction for some reason. But, for me, they peaked with Freebird which admittedly is pretty legendary. Oh, and if you like that, check out Outlaws' Green Grass And High Tides from 2 years later. Then try and tell them apart All very interesting but I still think Quo supporting them in the UK is about as weird as gets

I must be the only person who had never heard Freebird until the Hydro last week.
Somehow for such a classic it totally passed me by !

There's something almost admirable in that I'm sure I even heard it once before a Quo gig on one of those 'tapes' they put together for the waiting crowd's appreciation. It was actually the B-side of the Sweet Home Alabama single and a video of them on the Old Grey Whistle Test WAY back in the mid 70's, performing it at a festival, pretty much sealed the deal of it's legendary status I think. They certainly never recorded anything better for me.

Nope, the only LS tune I've ever heard of is - surprise, surprise - Sweet Home Alabama. Even the plane crash in 77 didn't have an impact here and no song of theirs appeared in the charts.
