My friend asked this morning if Francis was good on Saturday. I said he was OK, she said only ok? I said may be a bit better than ok... I was glad I went, if he did do something similar again, then I would probably go again - but I doubt he would do it again. From what I gather and may be that is influencing my opinion, but this tour (and in fact the book) might have been to avoid breaking a contract with Rick. I think Francis was kinda playing it safe - not exactly a greatest hits set list but along those lines. I don't think I heard anything particularly knew - although I wasn't really expecting too. I was amazed that I didn't hear THAT PHRASE which I most certainly WAS expecting to hear. It was all good fun - Francis seemed on reasonably good form - he was obviously pretty nervous and some of the early bits seemed to not get the expected responses which might have not helped the nerves. It was good to hear him play some bits and pieces and I did learn that he knows at least 19 chords. I'm not sure if Mick Wall added that much - may be chatting to Bob might have been better. I thought it was a bit short - 2 hours including an interval. I think it was fairly obvious that there were some questions from the audience that were out of bounds - there was nothing about a new album, there was nothing about We Talk To Much (other than the plugs to buy it and the book) and for me there was too much detail about Ricks last heart attack. So, that's about it. Yeah - I think it was more than OK - the majority of the crowd seemed to enjoy it so that's good :-)

We've got a variety of reports from various venues now and it seems you, like most, have enjoyed it Agree that Mick Wall isn't the best partner for this - after all he's got nothing to do with the band, helping write the bios was his job, even if he's a fan. Bob would've been a far better option. They could've remembered and generally have come up with more unexpected stories together .. . I do remember that Rick had a book contract and there was speculation Francis had taken that over (had to ?). Seems there was some truth in it. And yep, it's a shame the album isn't promoted more. Hannah could've come along too and played a few tunes with him acoustically ..

I purposely wrote that before I read any other reviews and then found reading the other reviews quite interesting. It seems like there is a basic 'Set list' which is expected but there were variations which is good. As I remember we didn't get the Cardiff story whatever that was but we got the Vienna Incedent which was told in a very funny way. I think I've heard it before but Francis was sharing a cell with a Chuck Berry look alike amongst others. The bits on the guitar sound pretty similar although he played another song for us before the Italian song which again was funny. What does sound a bit disappointing was the ask Francis bit. It seems that there were the same questions word for word. We had the Triggers Broom question and where are you staying so I know where to come and pick my mum up from. :-(. I can understand that there would be questions off limits but surely there would have been enough 'safe questions on the night? Strangely my question was similar to the Triggers Broom in that I asked where is the green Tele? I'm sure I've heard that it is/was back with Fender or that it's been scrapped which from Francis wouldn't be a shock.

I'd forgotten about the Rick contract thing and Francis sort of taking it over. Or at least that was the suggestion. Like everyone else, I read that somewhere. I doubt there was any obligation to do so but it was maybe seen as an opportunity to take up the reigns given that the book and CD were coming out. He's almost half way through the tour now and I imagine he will be glad to get to the end of it. My own view is that without social media or forums like this, no one would know the differences between one night and another unless they attended more than one. People are now able to 'report' in fine detail to those that are interested. Should artists adapt and change everything every night? It's certainly an arguable point. A new approach for a new digital and immediate communication era? Imagine Quo doing a different set every night to keep one step ahead of the social media jungle drums? As if!

I'm actually not sure that the questions aren't genuine. You mustn't forget, the vast majority in attendance are not mb diehards like us. They are the common and garden fans who've seen the band on stage and read the occasional lines in the Sun or DM. So their questions won't be too sophisticated and instead will be harmless and unimaginative - and yes, repetitive, as they don't know what has been asked the night before. Those who are members of forums and follow their every move on social media are just a tiny fraction. As has been mentioned before the main core of fans in the UK came to follow them in the 70s. A generation not renowned for spending their lives with smart phone in hand or in front of a computer screen. (Reminded me: We were only the second year to have computer lessons at school - Basic naturally. And they were those Commodore 3016 computers with monochrome monitors and 16 KB (!) memories. It felt quite modern at the time ) Additionally with this formate I don't expect fans to do multiple nights. So changing it for the sake of the fans is simply superfluous. Change will most urgently needed for Francis. Telling the exact same stories for 30 or 40 nights in a row has to be torture, no matter how professional you are. He'll need changes to survive. Not too many though - we know he's a creature of habit and needs his routines to feel comfortable. Gigs are a different matter. If it was known that the band plays varying sets during one tour, I'm sure some fans would be tempted to do multiple nights again. Although - there again is an age factor. We all aren't getting any younger either ..

Yeah. I agree pretty much with the above. I certainly wouldn't expect a tour like this to be drastically different every night. I don't think it is like music gigs and certainly gigs in the past when people did multiple nights. I wouldn't expect many people would do multiple night of this tour and so the variation would only be for Francis benefit or purely spontaneous. I am sceptical about a couple of the questions though. From what I read elsewhere on here they sounded almost word for word. I'm sure not all of them were and I realise that there was never going to be earth shattering content. I forget to mention about how it sounded like royalties might have started to drive a wedge into the band from quite early on and how quickly it might have turned from having a laugh making beer money from playing music with a few mates to becoming a business and lively good with no plan b.
By the way Commadore PET's - you were lucky. We had one computer for the whole school which those who chose computer science had to book time to use at lunchtimes...

When I were a lad etc. etc.... I never was a lad .. But definitely no calculators allowed for maths, as opposed to my kids' maths lessons. We actually learnt how to use a slide rule ! Have no idea how it works any more and my sons certainly don't even have a clue what it is.

This is turning into an age discussion. Age discussions only take place when you get old Just to give it some sort of number or perspective, my fiancée at the time bought me my very first pocket calculator in 1978; the same year I bought her a digital watch! That's 3 years after I left school. Computers? We had a reel to reel tape room with booths for languages and that was yer lot. Yeah, a slide rule rings a bell, snakelady. I think we used it for trigonometry. Or was it calculus? Or was it for flicking wet balls of paper at the ceiling? I now have my entire music collection on a device 4" across instead of an entire room of about 100 square feet
