I enquired about this as it's been a longtime since we've heard anything and I was told that they have only found a partial bit of audio from the first half of the show, so it looks unlikely they'll release it unless they can find the rest of the audio.

I don't know where you have been for the past 10 years. They found the edited masters (Footage) and the full show on a 24 track master, including the overdubs, around the time they did the Pictures Doc. Cheers

Given the right marketing, I think a DVD and album would sell pretty well. However, there are probably two flies in the ointment.
1. The band, or rather Francis now, thinks the performance was awful.
2. Calling it The End of the Road would now seem quite silly although they could humour it up and make that part of the marketing.
I have always disagreed with point 1. I haven't watched it in a long time but my recollection is that the band were fabulous (as I also thought on the day) and one or two songs remain the best live renditions to this day. Roll Over Lay Down being one in particular.
But I don't see an official release any time soon. There never was an album, which I must admit, amazed me at the time. That would be something special.

Regardless of what the band thinks, it could still be released... and it would still be called "The End Of The Road" as that's what it was at the time. Re-branding it would be silly, mainly for the DVD that is... with the audio format - they could just brand it 'Live At The Milton Keynes Bowl'. Not much was overdubbed on Roll Over Lay Down other than Rossi's vocals and a bit were Rick stopped playing during the intro was patched up... that's all. Mixed and Overdubbed @ a studio in Surrey on 18th September 1984, and the footage was edited a month later in October.

"End of the Road 1984" would be a pretty clear title. And for the line-up with Alan and Pete, it was the end (apart from Live Aid).
I think they can still wait until the main deluxe series is through, as to have not too many products out at the same time.

Makes sense, especially for people who don't collect every single Quo release. Think it deserves to be released alone, with no other new Quo product out to stand a chance to get noticed. It might mean though, that it'll only be released once the band is no more. If the package is good enough I'm prepared to wait for that though (what's a few more years after decades of waiting .. ). Maybe do an End Of The Road Tours package then

It's something that's been ignored for so long. We got two video releases at the time rather than just the one package and we got one live song - Mystery Song Medley - from a gig that was so important in terms of the band's history. And, to me, so good! I have always been puzzled by the absence of a live album. It really was a no brainer in terms of likely sales back in 1984, regardless of the car crash of relationships behind the scenes. So here we are, almost 35 years later still looking for one. I got used to puzzling Quo releases decades ago. Things that made no sense to me like putting Whatever You Want out as a b-side on two singles running! Like releasing The Anniversary Waltz as two singles when the first one on CD and 12" versions gave you the entire recording! Like constantly releasing Rockin' and Whatever You Want as extra tracks. No doubt record company decisions but still.... So nothing surprises me now.

.....on second thoughts, maybe because of the success of Anniversary Waltz (part 1) UK Number 2 in the singles chart, they thought they would cash in and release the first part of the extended Part 1, as Part 2 for a follow up single, instead of recording a new selected batch of oldies. I think Part 2 reached the lower reaches of the Top 20 in the UK

I suspect most people had the full length version of the first one or it might have been a bigger hit. Ironically, it also gave us a live track we didn't have except on video in Dirty Water. I dare say they had to do something to help sales along, especially with intermittent collectors

All very good points guys. You are right, AW Pt2 reached number 14 without looking it up (that was my era, I remember every move Quo made for a decade....weird)!
Totally agree with what has been said about EOTR. I think (older) Quo fans love it because it was slow and heavy, that set, full 45HT, and was Alan's last full gig; and also the emotion that surrounds it. I think Francis hates it, because within 2 years they had changed and become what he wanted (lighter, played faster, new lineup, different set etc), and to him that gig was very quickly old Quo and out of date. Having said that, they have re-released the back catalogue of studio albums 3 or 4 times now, so what's the difference?
I definitely think its a big gaping hole in the back catalogue both DVD and album. I mean, the NEC gig has recently come out on the BBC live boxset and a full stand alone release! Maybe there really are issues with what exists in terms of master tapes etc. Quoincidence and Frozen hero seem to be the go to guys for that sort of knowledge?
It is a shame though; I don't really watch music DVDS these days, but I would love it on CD.

Slightly off topic, but I don't want to start a new thread just for one answer. I got the new NEC double CD for Christmas, and have only just realised that it has that silence/ gap near the start of Roadhouse Blues. Do I have to go back to the person who bought it, get a receipt, and go back to the shop (or online seller) where it was bought? Or can I contact the record company/ distributor to replace CD 2? I'm rubbish at sorting out these sort of things!

Incidentally, have these 'faulty' discs been replaced by amended recordings? Or are we stuck with what we've got?

There's a lot I would love to discuss and let all the Quo fans know about regarding Quo's absolute mess of an archive, but at this moment in time I can't. Regarding the Milton Keynes gig, the full show is there in audio form - but the full show in footage form is missing, sadly... and it's one massive legal issue with that gig. Trinifold claim to own it (which I believe they do) and Universal claim to own it. and regarding the Live At The N.E.C. CD replacement, contact Universal as soon as possible. Cheers

I can't even remember who actually bought it!

Universal have 3 of the 15 reels from the whole show... the guy who has been digitising a whole bunch of reels for the archives has the rest of the reels as they were in Rossi's studio. Reason for the show not being released is down to who owns the rights. Cheers
