They say Queen stole Live Aid, but this is certainly giving them a run for their money.

The biggest success at Live Aid is what the media says it was. Right? And they said it was Queen. So it must have been. It's a long time ago but I thought quite a large number of acts went down really well, in the UK at least. Including U2, although Bono milked it a bit and was trying too hard when he went down to the crowd (unbeknown to the rest of the band I believe). I guess Freddie's enforced audience participation swung it and Queen's admittedly very well structured little set. Or that is now the long held perception.

I was around 16 at the time and really loved the day for all the music, Obviously Quo were the band I most[ Wanted to see and the other highlights were Queen and then U2 were the other band that stood out. Didn’t really know about them at all but it did awaken an interest in them, I’m not a massive fan but they certainly have a few cracking tunes.
I came across this on YouTube and it lived up to my expectations after all these years. 👍
I agree with you about the Bono thing tho.😁

I recall being really excited about seeing Quo because the year before I thought I'd seen them for the last time at Milton Keynes. Little did we know! After they went off, I just sort of picked at the event throughout the day. It was all very much an 80's fest after Quo with acts like Style Council, Paul Young, Dire Straits and U2 of course, which I guess you would expect. But the further up the bill you went, the real heavyweights began to step up to the plate. I didn't think the Philadelphia event was as good and the number of 'sponsors' that had to be announced before each act came on left a sour taste in the mouth given the reason for it all. But it was a good thing to watch as a 28-year old music lover.

This was the moment I really got into U2.
Bono really knew how to work it didn’t he?
Obviously Queen were amazing but I also loved Dire Straits that day.

I went for Quo but was disappointed they played RAOTW. I already despised that song and we knew it was going to be the opener.
Queen and U2 were probably the only bands to try and "seize the day". I did like U2 a lot at the time.
Bowie I enjoyed, and also Ultravox!!
Anyone remember Adam Ant totally blowing what was left of his career?

As I did throughout the day. I can't actually remember Ultravox either Bowie and U2 I liked so I watched both. This was in the middle of Bowie's 'mainstream' phase; all baggy suit and blonde quiff. But he nailed it with that video. Reminding people why they were there and why they were watching.

I recorded the whole day on VHS video including the Philadelphia gig. I still have the tapes. My highlights were 'Don't Waste My Time', Quo. U2's 'Bad' Bowie's 'Heroe's' Queens polished set and Dire Straits. I got bored watching the likes of, Style Council, Adam Ant, Bryan Ferry, Paul Young and Sada. On the American side, I enjoyed Bryan Adams despite satellite sound problems from the JFK stadium, plus Simple Minds, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. The following year I saw Queen blow Quo of the stage at Wembley. It was only the second time I had seen Queen, the first being when they supported Mott The Hoople in '73 at the Southend Kursaal.

It was in the same venue that I first saw Quo - Edinburgh Caley Cinema. Same scenario as yourself really. I bought Queen's first album (or rather my mum bought it for me ) on the strength of the reviews of that tour and I think I heard Keep Yourself Alive on the radio. As for Live Aid, I've forgotten most of the Philadelphia broadcast. I wanted to see Judas Priest but I think they were missed over here because of the overlapping of the two events.

You should have been there Mr mortified, it was even worse. George Thorogood was on the satellite link from The States and you hardly hear it, I was yelling at all the non-music fans to shut up. Did they heck? As for Adam Ant, he ends up with one song, so he plays his new single that no-ones ever heard off, does so much fannying he's out of breath, shouts "Look Ma, top of the world". Fair play, he knew his career was up in flames, like Jimmy Cagney in White Heat. The single made No:50.
