I've always really liked this (though I think I Know You're Leaving was the better choice to be a single). However, I've generally wondered why when other bands like Foreigner, etc were releasing ballads that were huge hits and got lots of radio play why Quo didn't get that. For me it has all you need for a big hit. And I do love the extended mix. www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCbwzRHitTE

I agree with you, I really like both songs and I think it shows a depth to their music that people hadn’t really seen. Which is probably why they didn’t do well because it wasn’t accepted by the fans and the wider public probably didnt get to hear it or didn’t associate it with Quo as it deviated too much from their recognisable sound.

I thought this extended version of Who Gets The Love was great. It just had a bit more about it than the edited single, which I didn't think was distinctive enough to stand out on the radio. I heard it for the very first time in a shop when buying milk (or some such) and was a bit underwhelmed to say the least. I didn't know it was being released after the title track. But the CD/12" saved it, I have to admit. I also agree that I Know You're Leaving was the better ballad. A single in the Netherlands I think although I'm not sure if it was a hit. Also written by Dutch composers, although not credited on the official Quo website for some reason. Just a bit of trivia there As an aside, I haven't seen the official video for Who Gets The Love, probably since 1988!

How different is the 12”, is it like the remastered album version with the extended harmonies at the end ? Btw I put Ain’t Complaining on in the car today just to listen to both the songs mentioned, I can categorically say that I still love them both. 👍👍😁😁

It certainly opens like it. It's also 7:09 in length compared to the album rendition which is only 4 minutes odd long. The main difference for me is the quieter break about half way through (3:57 to be exact) which features an excellent solo which some have said was Pip Williams. I'm not convinced. Sounds like Francis to me. All day long in fact. There are obviously different nuances here and there - as there always was with extended mixes back then - but that break is what makes the longer version for me. By the way, I'm with you on the title track of the album. I've always loved it. And the 12" version, again, is even better Both of the extended mixes of these songs are on the new deluxe editions of Ain't Complaining. The first time they've been released since they first came out and I had a perm Again, a great break at about 3:25 in. Changing the emphasis of the song.

I think there's 3 versions, the 7" edit at just over 4 minutes, the album version at 5 and a half, and the 12" extended version with Pip playing the Spanish guitar solo. The only digital release of the 7" edit came out on "A Few Bars More" (compilation) in 1993 - pretty sure. The original CD single featured only the extended version. www.discogs.com/Status-Quo-Who-Gets-The-Love/master/91010.

I didn't appreciate that about the 7" edit. I'll have a look at all of the versions I've got. You've intrigued me

I think it could be Francis but his style can be 'replicated' as seen with Rick's solo album last year. It could just as easily be Pip, I agree. Having said it can be replicated, that style is a little different for him on this track. As I think it is on Long Legged Girls a couple of years before I always thought. Lots of 'substances' around at that time. I doubt anyone remembers WHO played what

I read recently that Micky Moody also played on Rick's solo album, and it was he who did the solo on Long Legged Girls and 1 or 2 others.
I'm fairly sure it is Pip doing the Spanish guitar solo on WGTL, and also on Magic on the AC album. He had a penchant for unusual guitar/sounds and quite possibly had the idea for it, being a producer an' all.

I seem to remember an interview where it was mentioned that Francis had asked Pip to show him how to play the solo. After all he did play it live and quite good too. IMO Who Gets The Love is the better ballad compared to I Know You're Leaving, so the record company chose the right tune.
