I've decided I won't make it too easy for you - so I'll include the covers albums. After all, they are official albums and they contain enough tracks to make it interesting.
For me the choice of covers for this album was ok. Don't get me wrong - I firmly believe they should never have recorded even one covers album to begin with, but it has been recorded and despite my general feelings I've bought it. What I can't stand, what I really, REALLY hate are the re-re-re-re-re-..recordings of the hits. I refuse to believe that they actually made a difference and the band sold even one album more because of them. Rather the opposite. In the meantime they definitely are a reason for me to not buy an album and I'd assume I'm not the only one to see it this way. Yes, at gigs there's always that part of the audience who only spring to life when the hits are played at the end of the set, but those people don't buy original albums anyway. Maybe they do own a hits collection, but certainly even they don't need 10 hits collections with 10 versions of the same song ?!
Riffs .. My favourite definitely is I fought The Law and there's a few more I like, probably helped by the fact that I've never heard the originals. So the Quo recordings were fresh and new for me.Out of the Quo tunes I've always liked DTD. This certainly isn't the best version, but I guess it'll make my top 9. Let's see ..
Forgot to mention: My version of the album doesn't contain the ELO tune, so I can't include it for that reason alone.

Maybe they do own a hits collection, but certainly even they don't need 10 hits collections with 10 versions of the same song ?! There was a reason behind these re-recordings. Basically, the band did not want to record another covers album but, as we all know, were "blackmailed" into it by the music company so they would be allowed to record Heavy Traffic. They refused point blank to promote the album in the normal way, so the method of getting round that was to have songs on the album that they already played live. Therefore the 'promotion' box was ticked. As for the album itself, I think Riffs is probably my favourite out of the three covers albums. If I had to have one. But, to be honest, I never really took to any of them. Let's just call this the best of a so-so bunch The 8 tracks I've chosen weren't that easy to pick. I only like about 6 tracks. I never could stick the originals of I Fought The Law (Kris Kristofferson or The Clash) or Centrefold so they came right out. So I plumped for: Born To Be Wild (they actually made a good job of this one) Takin' Care Of Business (faithful to a good original) Wild OneOn The Road Again (best on the album by a mile) Tobacco Road All Day And All Of The Night Don't Bring Me Down (faithful to a cracking original) Pump It Up (another Elvis I don't like, but hey)
I wouldn't have chosen Wild One because the original is SO good and Quo did it no justice whatsoever. But it's better than what else is on offer. Notwithstanding Rick's naff Elvis impression. Presley that is not Costello. I forgive them this album because it basically resulted in the renaissance that was Heavy Traffic. And, to be fair, a cracking DVD came with one of the versions of Riffs

First of the dvd was the highlight of this album for me. My opinion is it is a lazy album, but nowhere near as lazy as 'famous', I'm different to a lot of quo fans in a way that I like it when they experiment and try something different cause I do get bored of the shuffle and blues etc....but I do still like it if a good song comes out of it. I didn't like I fought the law cause I thought Rick should have sung it, Francis's voice was too weak in my opinion and the same with All day and all of the night, but the solo was spot on! Born To Be Wild: I like the different take with the shuffle (slight contradiction maybe?! lol) and thought it came out really well. Wild One: I liked the original, but this is just easy to listen and makes me smile On The Road Again: I quite like Francis's voice on this Tobacco Road: standard really but still good Centerfold: I thought this was fun and it was also the first time they let Rhino take lead on vocals, which I thought he deserved, but the song is different for quo and aplaud them Don't Bring Me Down: Love the original, but this is just as good Junior's Wailing: to me this was the best of the reworked songs Pump It Up: loved the original, and again I aplaud them for doing something unpredictable, I love it. I wasn't keen on the covers album ideas, I accepted don't stop because it was a novelty, and I knew second one was coming as in an interview they stated in the contract with whoever included another covers album and best of album, thats why they chose an independent label to release Under The Influence on.

I struggled on this one and had to go to the re-recordings to make it work and could only then get 7. See below.

I keep changing my mind between Born To Be Wild and Wild One. Usually I skip both, but I need an 8th track and Centrefold (or the hits ..) just isn't an option. I'm surprised On The Road Again is doing so well, but then I've voted for it as well, although I'd not listen to it voluntarily either. This isn't easy ..

It suits Francis's vocals really well and Rick's guitar gives it a nice, moody feel. Something Rick was very, very good at throughout his career. He'd use chord structures and progression plus a sound diametrically opposite to that of Francis. And it worked superbly well. The song is quite faithful to the original in most aspects but I personally think it's a stand-out on this album.

The real reason behind some, of not all not all of the re-recordings, I believe, was because of a legal issue with Alan who had complained about his performances on record being used to promote the then current line up when they mimed on telly. The Roffs version of Whatever You Want appeared in 2001ish when they performed on This Morning 😊

Yeah, that version of WyW appeared on 1997 on breakfast telly whilst prmomting the greatest hits and also the Freddie Starr Show.
It first emerged on a German cd single of In the Army Now which was released to promote the 97 tour .
Matt spoke in FTMO about them re-recording some Quo classics for performing on tv.
This was prior to Riffs being recorded , hence that version of WyW being used on British morning telly in 2001👍

I can only get to six.
The cover of Quo songs are pointless, so no vote for them.
Wild One is awful, awful cover of an awful song. Down there with Hound Dog IMHO.
Nothing is added to Born To Be Wild, All Day and All Of The Night (That was my bands opening song, back in the 80's) or Centrefold.
That leaves:
I Fought The Law Taking Care Of Business On The Road Again Tobacco Road Don't Bring Me Down Pump It Up

The reasons for that are fairly obvious. Although Matt wasn't with the band in 1997 so this track (and others) must have been re-recorded more than once. The murky world of music publishing and ownership
