Message from John (Thursday 17th January 2019).We regretfully announce and confirm that JCQ frontman Rick Abbs has without notice decided to leave the band and shall not be making any further appearances with JCQ including the forthcoming Australian Tour. Rick originally joined the band on a temporary basis which eventually became more permanent. We thank Rick for performing the role of frontman throughout his tenure with JCQ and we wish him well for the future.
This situation has unfortunately placed us in an invidious position and left us with numerous logistical dilemmas; however we do intend to fulfil all obligations and do not foresee any of our forthcoming gigs being cancelled or altered.
As a result of this latest development an opportunity has now arisen to fulfil the role of frontman/lead guitarist in JCQ. If anyone is interested in this position please apply by (Facebook) private message to which absolute discretion will be assured.Source: www.facebook.com/JohnCoghlanOfficial/

Appears they've got a very good replacement for the Australian tour.. 👍 Everything will have already been booked - from band and fans alike and with Australia not just around the corner it would've been very expensive to cancel it all. Not to mention a shame for Aussie fans as they aren't exactly spoilt when it comes to Quo gigs. So good for them it still goes ahead - can't be easy for JCQ either to break even or make some money with it .. And I assume Alan's going to make a guest appearance at least ?

I do hope the tour isn’t loss making and they do get decent crowds. The problem is with the band Status Quo still existing your normal punter isn’t going to put themselves out for it. Even with the name John Coghlan attached. Apart from your 70’s FF fans they won’t have heard of him. After all it’s 37 years since he left. That’s several generations ago. Yes there will be patches of FF fans spread around Aussie but the question is how many compared to punters who would fancy a night of hits with Status Quo. It’s a tough call to put this together and expect it to succeed. I am not dissing anyone here but it’s just the cold reality of the situation. I am sure whoever is financing it wether the band themselves or a promoter then surely they must have done their homework and sums. I do hope it’s successful and I am sure with the band ‘ Taste’ attached their will be a few Rory/ Blues fans who will be excited by it. Maybe Alan announcing some guest appearances will also help as at the moment no one knows. I think if he is going to do it. Announce it rather than secretly appearing is the way forward to help the sales.

I did see on JC's FB page that someone called Tyrone 'Ty' Coates is doing the Oz tour. Can't say as I've ever heard of him personally but it seems he was in the Party Boys and The Bombers. JC also thanked Nuff so clearly he had a part to play in setting it up, makes you think AL will be involved in some way, shape or form. Let's hope so, if nothing else it'll confirm he's fit and well. It also appears from FB that a long term replacement for Rick Abbs is still being looked at. Folk were invited to apply via FB, (I ummed and arred but decided against it) Fingers crossed whoever does get it brings about an upturn in tempo. I like the JC setlists and would love to go and support but it's just too slow for my ears.

Oz tour has been cancelled, JC has just posted on FB:
We are extremely disappointed to announce that the Australian tour has been cancelled, as it is not now financially viable due to the tight budget not allowing for all the changes to flights that would have been necessary owing to the unexpected departure of a band member in January. We are so sorry to let down all those of you who have already booked tickets, and thank Ron, the promoter, for all his efforts to rectify this situation. We very much hope to see you all in the future.

Flights to and within Australia do not come cheap. And you know what airlines are like about giving refunds

Clearly something has gone on, seem to have parted on bad terms. Bands eh, worse than soap operas!

Sadly that was to be expected, else he'd not have left that short before one of, if not the biggest tour the band have ever done. Hope they don't wash their dirty laundry in public now .. I wonder what will become of the band now ? John might even consider retirement. After all he's well into his 70s and drumming is the most exhausting job in a band (I assume).

Nah, I think they're popular enough to make a living to top up his pension and to add to what he probably earned from the reunion. And he enjoys it. I think he'll carry on. They'll just find a new, permanent band member and do what they do till Spud is genuinely too old to continue. He seems fit enough to me and they tend not to travel very far from southern England as a rule.

Rick Abbs leaving JCQ has nothing to do with the Oz tour being cancelled. Ticket sales are the reason the Oz tour has been cancelled.

Rick Abbs leaving JCQ has nothing to do with the Oz tour being cancelled. Ticket sales are the reason the Oz tour has been cancelled. They'd lined someone up for Oz so Rick leaving certainly wasn’t the reason. A reality check perhaps? From time to time I see comments on FB suggesting JCQ is as entitled to call themselves Quo as Quo themselves are, on the basis of having one original member. JC spent just under 20 years in Quo, Frame, Andy and Rhino have done over 100 years between them. JC wrote nothing, the aforementioned trio wrote/co wrote more Quo classics than I care to remember. JCQ is a tribute band. JC is clearly capable of drumming on Quo songs better than anyone, 2013/14 proved that to me. For whatever reason his preference is to play Quo tracks painfully slow. Watch the Shepperton Jam and listen for what Rick says as soon as they finish Railroad. Two words ‘so slow’. They sound like they’re slurring their words it’s that bad, same as any JCQ video. JC will always be a legend amongst the hardcore. Playing pubs here and there in the UK, or a gathering of the hardcore in Minehead, absolutely. Rightfully so. A tour of Oz, cloud cuckoo land.

Very sad but true Bam. Time the comparison’s were put to bed. For those who enjoy them it’s All good and for those who enjoy Status Quo it’s sll good. But the comparisons regarding Stature just isn’t worth arguing about !

Drastic, but certainly very realistic too. Hope they realised in time, so not too much money has already been spent on the trip and the cancellations (flights, hotels, ..) didn't prove too costly. When you think about it - the much bigger Status Quo have only toured Oz in recent years when they had a tour sponsor cause else it wouldn't have been viable financially. It had me wondering from the start how the much smaller JCQ were going to manage .. Shame for Aussie Quo fans though and with the relatively late cancellation some may have booked hotels already. Hope everybody gets their money back.

Bands eh, worse than soap operas! im thinking you aint read his reply on johns facecloth page? I’ve read it all. Rick’s reply, Gilly’s response, Rick’s wife wading in, someone saying he left because JC is ‘slow, sloppy and utter e’, etc etc. I’m amazed they’ve not removed the whole post altogether. It’s a right shenanigans.
