The song “In the Army” was originally written by Rob and Ferdi Bolland in 1981 as part of their album dedicated fully to war topics, but it became a worldwide hit in 1986 when Status Quo recorded their own version of the song. It reached # 2 in UK charts. Slade’s frontman Noddy Holder appeared on the song shouting out only one line: “stand up an fight!”
My boss emailed the above to me earlier, he said it was on google. I would have said it wasn't Noddy Holder at all.

This isn't true - it's been confirmed many times over the years by many people (including Jeff Rich) that it's definitely not Noddy Holder but one of the Quo crew.
The Noddy Holder story originates from the Status Quo Top Of The Pops2 special in 2000 which incorrectly credited Noddy on the information captions.

Nah, it's one of the Quo crew as johnnymain says. I can't remember which one but the band did say in an interview a while back. Not sure where TOTP 2 got their information. Made it up no doubt.

Maybe Noddy did it for fun during a live broadcast ? I do remember hearing the Bolland/Bolland version for the first time. It made me take notice straight away as it was such a different type of song. I couldn't help but like it and recorded it to a cassette from the radio, the way we used to .. Then, less than a year later the Quo version appeared, which I found very strange at the time. Usually when a cover is recorded, it's an old song, but with ITAN the original was still new - so what was the point of a very similar sounding cover ? To my surprise the Quo version charted big time whereas the original never achieved much popularity. Later DJs would play that though, pointing out it was the original, probably to show how knowledgeable they were.

I've never heard the original. Were the composers Dutch? Can't quite remember but they'd never have been given airplay on UK radio in the early 80's - if ever - so it's no surprise to me that it was Quo's version that ultimately charted.
I didn't appreciate it was a cover until many years later. I just thought it was a song the band had picked up - like Jam Side Down - that someone else wrote but had never been recorded.

The original got some airplay here, so wasn't completely unknown when the Quo version was released.

The roadie was called Nut Hatch. It was actually a roadie called Chris 'Privet' Hedges as I asked Rossi in 1988 who it was and that was his answer.
