I’ve always had a liking for the Buzzcocks. I was just reading an article about the first ever independant label Punk release in 1976 which was ‘ The Buzzcocks - Spiral Scratch EP ‘ After Initially pressing a few copies which sold out the band didn’t have any money to press any further copies. So the Manager Of virgin Records Manchester lent the band £600 so they could press another run which was sold in various Virgin record shops around the UK on top of their counters. That £600 came from the takings collected from Fans who had paid for a Bus trip to see a QUO gig !! So Status Quo fans played a massive role in Establishing the Punk Independant label craze which followed that EP. Haha. “Not a lot of people no that” - Michael Caine.

And quite topical with Pete Shelley's recent sad passing. Interesting story. Quo were one of a small number of long established bands that were less affected by the punk explosion. But you can imagine a bus trip to see Quo in 1976. They really were at the peak of their powers. I saw the Buzzcocks only the once; in early 1977. They were on a bill (3rd one down I think) with The Clash, The Jam, The Slits and Subway Sect. The rest, as they say, is history. Three of those acts went on to be successful with two of them becoming massive. Back then though, there were only about 100 people there in a 4,000 seater theatre in Edinburgh. I'm wallowing in nostalgia now. Well, I am a Quo fan

Wasn’t there an article a few years back relating to Quo being an influence on some of the punk bands due to their basic, rhythmic and heavy style, the complete opposite to the overblown Prog stuff the punks hated.
We all know the Weller connection and that Lydons a big fan so there is a strong link there.
Wasn’t one of the Buzzcocks also on Hello Quo ??

I do know members of he Damned were big Quo fans. The first ever Punk Single was ‘ New Rose ‘ by The Damned and if you’ve heard that there is Quo in there !

I think Quo had a big influence on Punk in the UK , similar style in some respects , 3 chords high tempo, whereas a lot of the other rock bands of the day were probably seen as out of touch to the guy on the street. John Lydon was a definite fan and mentions them several times in his book he even had a go at Marky Ramone in an interview saying he thought Quo were far better than Ramones. I always preferred the punk side of things and bands that straddled the line a bit like early Motorhead and early DC.
