Hi John
I have a question about the intro of Accident Prone, if i may.
Apparently there was a long intro by Rick, which got cut.
Can you remember what it was like? Is it on tape anywhere in the vaults ?
And did it become the intro to Whatever You Want ( the bit beforr the start of the shuffle)
Thanks
Cam 👍

This has been doing the rounds for a while. I think Pip Williams mentioned it initially a few years back but he didn't know what happened to the recording or why the intro wasn't used. Quo hadn't released any 12" singles by this stage, despite it being common practice, so an extended version - as opposed to the 7" simply being an edited version - wouldn't have been a consideration. I guess if anyone has an answer it will be purely based on memory.

Edits were done on the 1/4” stereo mix tape and when anything was extracted (shortened) then the section removed was always kept on the master mix reel. Where the orignal 1/4” mix tapes are I’ve no idea. However the 2” multitrack master tape did not get edited so the original intro remains. I did see the 2” masters for the IYCSTH sessions a few years ago back at the time I’d talked with Francis about the RAOTW remix. So even if the extracted part is lost it could be remixed from the 24 track masters.

All you need to do now is get hold of them (i.e. break into Francis's home when he's away on tour), remove all the horns and the female backing vocals and we'll have something approaching a proper Quo album You have previous now. We know you can do it. You've set a very high benchmark

I do really like the album, but think a remix could really enhance it.

Got to say, it would be amazing if John Eden could turn IYCSTH into something listenable, because so far it isn't. I've always been convinced that the quality of songs just isn't there no matter how it was recorded (as opposed to RAOTW). I'm prepared to let myself get positively surprised by the outcome though.

Was it just an extension of what we already hear at the start of the song? Or was it a separate bit, like what we hear at the start of Whatever You Want before the shuffle kicks in ? Or is that bit at the start of Whatever You Want what would have been the intro to Accudent Prone?

I get the impression that John can't remember one way or the other, Cammy. It was 40 years ago! But that if it does exist it will be on the original 24 track master tape. I guess it would be a question of getting hold of those and having a listen.

I'd like it, too, but the problem is that Universal already released a deluxe edition not so long ago. Putting out a new version of the album will be complicated. Maybe it could be done as part of the anthology project I kept suggesting (which, in one of my drafts, included remixes of selected tracks, but not a complete album)...

I was actually just joking. I genuinely don't expect to see any more re-mixed albums. Rockin'.... was a bit of a one-off because of the well documented sound issues. However, I imagine …. Heat turned out precisely they way they meant it to.

That's true. But several members seem to have issues with it now. Francis repeatedly complained about the backing vocalists in the liner notes of the last deluxe edition, and we know how Alan talked about the album later.

I'm not sure the band actually wanted it to sound like that. It might have been a record company decision or at least suggestion - and not just for the American market. At the time rock music was pretty much a thing from the past and charts and the radio in general were dominated by poppier music all over Europe. Shorter songs too, that's why AP got cut down as well is my guess.
So IMO it was still a time when the band did what they were told by the record company and what they wanted only came into play with the choice of songs maybe. You could say nothing much has changed since - they still tend to listen to management and record company and oblige ..

I just get the feeling they lost their direction with this one. I really don’t think a remix would improve it as an album. Just weak songs mixed with the odd good one imho. You can’t make sub standard songs better with just a remix. Funnily I really like ‘ Oh what a night ‘ even The backing vocals. Sounded really fresh at the time to me. When I bought WYW album on the day of release I wasn’t hopeful but absolutely loved it ! I couldn’t believe that they got back on form for that one. I loved it. Life is full of surprises lol.
