I just can't stand the song ! Having said this, the 'acoustic'arrangement is at least better than the original and yep, Andy's voice suits it indeed.

Totally agree, one of my least favourite songs from the "classic" era, this version and with Andy's vocals is better but I still thought it was an odd choice to put in the set when there are many other much better Rick songs.

There are a number of treacks that I didn't like the original versions of but do like the acoustic arangements of. Don't Drive My Car is certainly one of them! So yeah I prefer this to the original. Rain is another track where I prefer the acoustic arangement. Conversly there are songs that I like in their original form, thought I would like acoustically but don't! Reason For Living being the main one!!

I guess it's in the set and Andy sings it because it's a Parfitt/Bown composition. It was never a favourite of mine either. In fact, I've never spoken to anyone who actually likes it particularly! But they've always persevered with it. Although it had a very long lay-off up until it's return in 2008. This new arrangement is much more interesting than the original for me. Certainly more quirky - if that's the word. There are better Rick songs but I suspect they'll always put in one that they've done before. Familiarity is the new black

OK, maybe going to sound a bit controversial here but I think if the band are going to carry on (which they appear to be) then they should leave Rick's material behind once Richie has contributed to the writing. Assuming he does that is. I don't suppose it's a given. This is probably a topic on it's own actually. And I don't think I'll get many agreeing to be fair. It's just that it's been so long. The time for 'tribute' has long since passed. Let it lie. I'd love to see RPJ and his band do some of Rick's solo album and Quo songs though. What a gig that would be. I'd travel to see that

Agree.
I don't think RPJ and his band do Quo songs. They're a party band. I know RPJ did a lot to make his father's album see the light of day, but I'm not sure the RPJ Band would be the right choice to actually play the songs live. But I might be mistaken here, though. I think Rhino's Revenge and Richie did a good job playing Lonesome Road a few months back in Ireland.
Agree about RPJ. He never had anything to do with Quo's music (maybe constantly distanced himself from this type of music to avoid being compared with his dad ?) and I doubt his band could do it justice. Yes, the band should introduce Ritchie's own songs, but IMO they shouldn't remove Rick's songs from the set completely. For two reasons mainly: Rick is part, a large part of Quo's history. IMO it would be like rewriting that history if they'd erase all traces of Rick from the set completely. There's no need for it. Keep at least one song written by Rick to cherish the memory, but best choose one that's fresh and hasn't been done before. And secondly, if they'd take out every tune Rick has a writing credit for, Lindsay would get no more royalties from them. I don't know how much that amounts to, but she obviously isn't too well off financially, so every little bit helps, even while Francis generously still lets her have Rick's share of the band income.

I would have thought that as Quo really concentrate on the hits these days, and are playing a lot of festivals as opposed to their own songs. That the very least, Whatever You Want, will be in the set, thus Rick will always be represented there.

I think it's great Andy finally gets to sing it himself. Rick merely wrote the intro which has never been played live anyway. Somehow Rick was a specialist for intros. He added quite a few to songs from other band members and it's how he got a number of writing credits - HYB is another example.

What exactly is that intro that was never played live? I've never heard it. The only intro I know is on every live recording of it, and it's even longer than on record...

Now I'm puzzled...
Me too. If we're talking about the intro to Whatever You Want it has always been played in full. Or are we thinking of Mystery Song maybe? In terms of the song itself, I'm never really 100% sure who wrote what because of the way the early royalties were split but I'm sure I recall Andy saying he came up with the riff and Rick came up with the intro which, if rumour is correct, was composed a year earlier for Accident Prone. The lyrics I don't know about.

Yep, Andy has explained in detail how he wrote the song - that he wanted to write something really simple .. and on other occasions band members how explained how Rick kind of specialised in intros and came up with some great ones for songs otherwise written by others. Sometimes he got a writing credit added for it, sometimes not. Sorry, I seem to always mix up the WYW and MS intros ..

@inna, I think Her Royal Snakeness simply got her wires crossed. She was talking about Whatever You Want (as were we all eventually) but was thinking about the Mystery Song intro by mistake. But, to be fair, that's me speaking for her. I could be completely wrong. It's not unusual ( (c) Tom Jones 1965) Barra barra barra….

WYW is still Andy's song though, despite them playing it including Rick's intro .. (which accidentally is the best part of the song IMVHO). Maybe because they did actually play Mystery Song 'in full' (or not ..) during this tour (although I've done it before too) ? It was great to hear live and made me wonder why they had never done it while Rick was still alive ??

That's how I think of it too, and the same goes for DDMC too. I associate those tracks with Rick because even if he didn't write them on their own, he clearly made them his own, and more so than would be the case if it were covers.
Of course, where it gets messy is tracks where writers and singers do not overlap, e.g. "Over and Done"...

Backwater has always been the puzzler for me. It seems to be regarded as one of Alan's songs by a lot of fans but Rick co-wrote it.
Be great to have a book released that gave an account of how each song came together, who did what, etc. I suspect time and the use of various substances, legal and illegal, would render that nigh on impossible now sadly.

Alan described the writing relationship around that time as Rick supplying most of the riffs and Alan writing most of the melodies. Not particularly in depth, I know - and even if Alan wrote something alone, he might have co-credited Rick at the time.

Similar to what @inna said, it's probably associated with Alan because he sang it. I think the singer of the song, particularly in Quo's case, is the one that will always be associated with it. That doesn't work exclusively, obviously. Softer Ride being one example. But as a generalisation, these are the rules in our own heads

I'd be like that too with every other band, as I'd simply not know who wrote what. So I'd just associate the song with the singer, especially if there's more than one singer.
With Quo though it is different for me, especially if a little bit is known about the writing process, as is the case with WYW. E.g. I love A Year, it's sung by Francis, but IMO it's Alan's song. ROLD may have the whole band credited, but it's Francis' and Bob's song, Gravy Train is Rhino's and there are more .. Over And Done is interesting though. Not only is it sung by Francis, but it very much sounds like a R/Y tune too. I've always doubted whether it really was written by Alan and on his own .. Guess we'd indeed need a book and best written by Bob.
Just my perception and others may well see it differently ..
