Hi John, welcome to the board . I have a question about the song RAOTW if i may. Was there any reason why Rick didnt do lead vocals on it, given the fact he suggstes the song . At that time Rick on lead vocals wasn’t an issue in terms of single releases . I heard Rick do lead on this track when he did Rock Meets Ckassics a few years ago and he was very good. Here’s a link : youtu.be/w6JLnhvg55AAnyway, I know it’s over forty years ago now but if you happen to remember, that would be great. Kind regards 👍

Brought me to tears seeing that video of Rick, which I’d never seen until now. A great performance he did. I don’t recall how it was decided who would sing the verse’s but Rick of course is on the chorus’s with Francis. No reason why Rick couldn’t have done a brilliant job. But ultimately it would have been down to Pip as producer. On the recording which I talk about in the remix video they are both mixed to the same track on the chorus parts and Rick is slightly higher in level. When I finish the video you’ll be able to hear the vocals in isolation. Cheers, John

Thanks John for your time and input...
I‘m really looking forward to your video of the full Remix process of Rockin’all over the World.
I know we won‘t get any new remix of „Just Supposin‘“ and „Never too Late“ but maybe there‘s a chance of doing some remixes and filming the process. I‘m sure there are quite a lot of Quo fans around and really interested to get more details and insights about mixing....
Also do you see any chances for a new CD release of Partners In Crime „Organised Crime“ in the near furure?
Thanks John for answering our questions,
take care and stay alive, Cheers 👍

Thanks John for answering our questions, take care and stay alive, Cheers 👍 That would be an interesting one. Probably not economically viable but are any of these projects to be fair? Was there ever an 'old' CD release? I've never seen one. Maybe it slipped through the net which I find is gaining bigger and bigger holes as I get older. I did manage to download the album from vinyl but that's the only copy I have.

As I develop my website I’m adding clips on the Artists Pages. In some situations some of my productions got remixed by other producer/ engineers. This meant my original mixes didn’t always get heard. With Andy Fraser for instance Hugh Padgham remixed the album. In the same way that I did RAOTW I was not the original producer. It also happened in the case of the Partners album. So what I’m doing is putting up clips of my original mixes as I complete each Artist Page. It’s a slow process but us over 60’s people need to keep busy right? In addition wherever possible I’m doing a bit of remastering to my original mixes. I’m up to the letter ‘C’ so far so ‘P’ as in Partners and ‘S’ as in Status have a long way to go. But any fans of Free bass player Andy Fraser and Climax Blues Band might enjoy a read and a listen to what I’ve put up there. www.johneden.us

John, thank you for taking the time to reply to my question.
I’ll look forward to seeing the clips on your website in due course - it’ll be very interesting to hear the ciac in isolation.
Cheers again 👍👍

Hi John, I'd like to know why the decision was taken to speed up some of the tracks? I love the remix but I tracks like Rockin' and Dirty Water sound strange to me speeded up.
I was 8 when the original album came out and that's when it was bought for me so after 42 years of listening to it, I'll always have a soft spot for it, it was the album that introduced me to Quo.
Thanks for remixing it, it's great to hear an alternative version and would love other albums to be given this treatment.
Cheers mate!

The tempo changes I take responsibility for, but here is the background of how it came about... When I sent my original tempo mix of Dirty Water to Francis I didn’t get an immediate reaction. After a few days I spoke with him and in hindsight he’d felt the song had been recorded to slow. He went on to say that however good the mix was it wasn’t going to change the fact the tempo was too slow and it sounded like a « death march ». So he said he’d just resigned to the fact that’s how it would always be so best to move on. My response was that by using a time stretch plugin (a piece of software now common in digital recording) I could bring the tempo up but maintain the original pitch. I worked on this idea and sent him a new up tempo version. He loved it and told me he could now listen to the song all the way through. It wasn’t anything he asked to be done just my idea to offer a solution to his tempo concern. We talked about a few minor tweaks to other songs just to add energy. Rockers Rollin’ he did think maybe I went to far on the tempo shift but with the mix heavy on the two guitars I felt it worked. I still have the mixes at the original tempos before the tempo changes and mastering. Maybe at some point I can add them to my website. Peace Pupcious x

It's always interesting to hear how band members perceive the songs - now and then. And how the changes have been done (as far as I understand ).

Agree, it's great that John is still around here! Maybe Pip can check this forum out too at some point... I also thought "Dirty Water" runs too fast in the remix (to the point of sounding a bit unnatural) but the version they played with Jeff in the band is even faster, so I can see how Francis would prefer that. Alongside the removal of too many tracks on "Who Am I", it's the only issue I have with the RAOTW remix, really. Curiously, "Can't Give You More" runs a bit slower in the remix. Was that also a conscious decision pupcious?

Great to read your input here John! I've always wondered which Quo songs had tempos changed, for example I would love to hear what the solo to "Break The Rules" sounded like whilst being played originally. I do think the re-mastered and restored "Rockin All Over the World" album is a superb job though - It's transformed what was once an un-listenable album for me, into something which I now love playing!

It was also very nostalgic to open the tape boxes and see the track sheets for me. Looking back each album I’ve every made even outside Quo ties together memories of a journey through life. Recently I’ve been working with Alan on recordings he did with John in his Bombers period. It’s turned out really well and hopefully you’ll get to hear it soon.

That sounds promising Just to reiterate what Rick Roper said; the remix job on the Rockin' album has been a real highlight in recent years. It was like getting a brand new album! I always liked the original and although conscious of the different, almost quieter, 'sound' on the vinyl at the time it didn't bother me that much other than the fact that Francis's solos seemed to be drowned out or too far back in the mix. You can remix any Quo album you like!

John, in your kind reply to my original question you mention talking about the mix and having hearing the vocals in isolation . Is that available anywhere to listen to?
Kind regards

Yeah, I've seen that before. It's a terrific insight into the processes for someone completely ignorant like me. Absolutely fascinating. Some of the technical language John uses in explaining things is totally beyond me but the visual and audio approach to showing what was done is great. I could sit and watch and listen all day. I think I said before that it reminded me of those Classic Albums programmes that are shown on Sky Arts. An hour of this on the Rockin' album would do me nicely. Or any Quo album!

Thank you for the great feedback So in order to bring more of the process to you I’ve decided to start a YouTube channel “John Eden - Producer” and if say 2000 subscribers sign up there I’ll start to work on all the footage of this remix that was shot. Please let all SQ fans know about this that you think might be interested.
As a bit of background I bought a HD camera to shot this mainly due to having discussions with Francis about it being used in the documentary. Of course that didn’t happen so I think if enough interest in this can be show by way of subscribers I’ll put the hours into editing the video that was taken over the 3 month process covering receiving the tapes, the baking/transfer process up to the final mix shown in this video. Cheers and thank you all for your interest.
