I was never a Dire Straits fan. Didn't like them at all. I think I found them a bit bland when I was younger and somewhat opinionated and less tolerant But as a solo artist I seem to have taken to Mr Knopfler. I loved his Privateering album from a while back. Maybe I should check out Dire Straits' back catalogue now that I've mellowed

So a few years ago I finally bought the Brothers In Arms Album - and have no idea what everybody thought was so great about it. I find it utterly depressing and boring.

Love the Dire Straits stuff but not a huge fan of the solo material, with a couple of exceptions. I never got to see Dire Straits live but when I got tickets to see Knopfler about 15 years ago now, I assumed it would be all the Dire Straits material. Sadly (for me) it wasn't. He played a handful but it was mainly solo material and it did nothing for me. Sultans Of Swing, Money for Nothing, Brothers In Arms, Walk of Life, Romeo & Juliet, So Far Away, Lady Writer, Tunnel of Love, Calling Elvis, Twisting by the Pool, (I could go on), I think they're all brilliant. As I said, there are a couple of exceptions IMO. 'Sailing to Philadelphia' is a great song but my particular favourite is 'If this is Goodbye', which I believe is inspired by the voicemails left for loved ones by those trapped inside the Twin Towers during 9/11. It's hauntingly beautiful:

Never owned it so never heard it apart from the singles it spawned. @bam, our posts crossed but I agree about Calling Elvis. Its brilliant.

I do find Mr Knopflers twangy “clean” guitar sound a bit annoying at times. I do like this clip for its spontaneity at the beginning and his playing is great on what I consider to be a great track.

I find it utterly depressing and boring. I actually find the more sedate tracks as good music to relax to, as opposed to depressing or boring, but strangely enough the more upbeat track Walk of Life is enough to make me want to walk out of life, total commercial tripe. A definite skip track.

I've always liked Mark Knopfler's easy style and sometimes his songwriting is breathtaking, this has always been one of my favourites and for snakelady the Joan Baez version, superior to the original for me because of the vocal purity. His brother David has made some great music too over the years including the following from the album Songs for the Siren.

Absolute classic, apart from walk of life which is terrible. IMO the second best band at live aid after U2. I had given up on Quo by this point.

I had given up on Quo too by then and had no idea the EOTR tour had happened prior to LA. So when I later saw a summary - I didn't watch the whole Live Aid show(s) -it was Quo as usual. I do remember Bowie and Queen (they'd not be left out from a summary ..), but not U2 (who probably hadn't been left out either) and I think the Thompson Twins played Hold Me Now - I love that song . Btw. interesting idea for a thread - top 5 albums of all time with or without Quo - it got me thinking ..

Further to my last....how the hell did I forget Queen?
IMO Dire Straits were the third best band at live aid after Queen and U2.
I was working on the day and never got to see Quo opening until years later. In 1985 it was U2 and Simple Minds for me.
I just wish SM had played Wembley rather than the U.S. but hey ho!

I saw Dire Straits twice, once at the Hammersmith Odeon on the Alchemy recording in 1983 and at Wembley Arena on the Brothers In Arms '85 tour where every night at Wembley a guest guitarist would join the band on stage for one track. The night I went Francis Rossi was the guest.

So a few years ago I finally bought the Brothers In Arms Album - and have no idea what everybody thought was so great about it. I find it utterly depressing and boring. Although I like some tracks off it I can understand where you're coming from. I think the predecessor "Love Over Gold" is much, much, much better (did I say it was much better? ). In fact that is one of my favourite albums of all times. MK was at the top of his game at that point. I also have a lot of love for the final DS album "On Every Street". MK solo never excited me quite as much, I find several of his albums overlong and the folky stuff tends to bore me. But I do like the bluesy stuff off "Privateering" and I think his recent album "Down the Road Wherever" is really good, might actually be his best solo album so far. It was disappointing that he only played two songs from it at the Schleyerhalle this year! (Which reminds me, I wrote a gig report in German, but not one in English. Might be something to do when I have the time. It was a great night.)

That's OK that. I don't really know why I prefer him as a solo artist. I think maybe I just find the melodies he often comes up with more appealing. Mrs Mortified is a bit of a fan of Dire Straits; or was. She actually played Romeo and Juliet to me in the car not that long ago. I'd forgotten how much I detested it! But she also played me a track called Ride Across The River. I really don't like the album at all but that track I do like. So it's not all bad

There will be another release right after One Deep River, a four-track EP for Record Store Day called The Boy.
