Listening to the original version of this and my gawd it is awful. Quo's version while not being liked by some knocks Ian Hunter's original out the ball park.

I've never listened to the original. Till now! Probably because I can't be bothered with the Quo version. I don't know whose idea it was to cover it but it was a bizarre choice! Quo's rendition is pretty faithful to Ian Hunter's in terms of arrangement but Francis's vocals are miles better. But both are a bit grim if I'm honest. It's just not for me.

From a very forgettable Quo period. Total tripe

Thought Quo's version was bad enough, so an original that's even worse isn't exactly what I'd choose to listen to voluntarily

I've never listened to either versions, but what I've read above, I'll think I'll keep it that way.

Personally, I really like Quo's Speechless, but each to their own

Personally, I really like Quo's Speechless, but each to their own Shows that every tune the band has recorded is liked by some. Should it have been left off the album ? I don't like it, but then again - you do enjoy it and it's easy to skip for me, so there's no reason it shouldn't have been included.

snakelady I do think there were stronger songs on some of the b-sides that could have improved the album, which does sound very uneven. But it was sucessful, so who gives a damn...

Agree about the b-sides . The album does indeed range from great to dreadful .. Only we fans obviously can't agree which is which - see johns opinion re topic title.

I liked the album when it first came out. I liked it a lot actually and considered it their best for 5 years. In the days of an album a year remember! I thought Speechless was by far the weakest track. The single B-sides were all half decent with maybe Don't Give It Up being the runt of the litter. The remaster in 2005 of course brought them all together. The album now sounds very dated, which is what happens when you start to introduce a fashionable approach to the music and the production. In the 80's everything became quite synth laden; certainly by '86. Up until Never Too Late Quo had really just made straightforward rock albums. Or it seems that way to me. And, in my view, the music was the better for it. The Pips and Francis's of this world presumably disagree. But its their artistic product so they're perfectly entitled to.

It's not just having a lot of synths on it - it's also the style of mixing. Pip's tracks on ITAN sound rather trebly, with the guitars and especially the bass rather low in the mix. The tracks produced by Dave Edmunds have a more rock-oriented sound, and therefore they sound less dated nowadays.
