Funnily enough larger parts of today's youth like a similar style of music. Shrinks have explained it with them trying to rebel against their parents music. What do you do when your parents listen to rock and metal and similar and there's a chance you meet them at gigs ? You return to what your (great-)grandparents loved and your parents hated, obviously .. Urban/r&b/rap and varieties of each completely dominate nowadays. Almost every download song that charts is in that style. Certainly in the UK. It's actually quite boring. Justin Timberlake is performing the half time show at the Superbowl this year and Bruno Mars and Black Eyed Peas both did it recently which sort of emphasises the point. I was just thinking the other night when watching a repeat of TOTP that the sheer variety in the 70's and 80's in particular was so refreshing, whether I liked a song or not. Killing Joke were followed by Howard Jones, Aswad, Ashford & Simpson and Barbara Dickson! I know it sounds old but nowadays I can't tell my Kate Perry from my Taylor Swift As my dad used to say to me, "it all sounds the same". Maybe it is an age thing Every time our youth turns to their native language, the music styles of the UK and Germany head into different directions. It was the same during the first half of the 80s. For nearly a decade now the genre we class as 'schlager' has become very popular again, same as with our parents during the 60s/70s. M. Rosenberg style ..

I don't remember turning to Andy Stewart and Donald, Where's Yer Troosers? in 1971 when my mum suddenly - and inexplicably - started taking an interest in Atomic Rooster! She bought their single Devil's Answer. I was confused.

There was a time I really was into his music too. My little bro got me into John Cougar Mellencamp for a while The one guy I regret the most that I never saw him live is Billy Joel though. He still released great albums during the 80s

And the award for the best album of the 80's goes to....
This was the single. Terrific. I actually forgot just HOW good! NO idea where the footage comes from. Some TV show or other.

At one time in my life, he was the Boss : I bought the Nebraska album today as it was cheap in a Charity shop, listened to it earlier and it a bit too depressing and down beat for me. Hopefully it will get better with further listenings. Love these trakcs tho..

These two need adding here too. Everybody loved the first one - the reunion song: This song needs mentioning too in that respect (although I've never much liked it) - Germans will remember the story about Udo's leather jacket :

Talking about the NDW in the Back To Back thread reminded me I better add a few examples to this thread, as for a while it was all you'd hear on the radio. There was some really nonsensical stuff too :

Inspired by the BB thread: Typical Randy - makes you wonder about the factual mistakes ..

snakelady, that one is very strange. At least it's not just a bloke with a piano droning on about love, life and the New York skyline

Did like his Short People as well. We had a song in a similar style here from Westernhagen - Dicke - which was aimed at fat people. Suspect both wouldn't dare to write something remotely un-PC these days ..

I've always liked this song, the tune and the lyrics. They have a few others that I'm partial to too. This could prove to be an interesting and diverse thread @inna I remember that song but I'd never have guessed who recorded it. For some reason, the line "Wonder what's cooking at the palace tonight? Mm stew and beans" always stayed with me. Don't know why Flash & the Pan are amazing! I have two of their albums + two compilations. Wonderfully weird, but also catchy as hell. And Harry Vanda's guitar work is simply sublime. They could rock: Jump & jive:
Do weird disco-ish stuff:
Or go all epic Pink Floyd like in this one with a breathtaking guitar solo:

Bit of a guilty pleasure this one, look out for a certain bass player.

There's one song I've got to add for personal reasons. When lying in hospital at the start of 86, this was played on the radio quite often and it touched me, a lot ..

That's Top Of The Pops mate!! And that is what I was going to post!! The eighties stopped in 81, and rock music was never the same again!!

Some hidden pop gems in the Eighties, just not too many rock songs. Mind you think the hormones had well kicked for the first three!!
And all have a guitar solo

This guy was one of the biggest acts of the 80s (and afterwards) - not NDW though:
Lyrics are absolute hilarious

Funnily enough, I just downloaded Big Area the other week. I had the 12" single but I gave most of those away in a house move a couple of decades ago. I only remember now and then the odd one I had and grab the mp3 while my memory is intact I still have all of my 7" singles. Not sure what I had against 12" Storage probably coz I ditched the albums as well.
