Back to Back
A Mess Of Blues (Pomus/Shuman) Ol' Rag Blues (Lancaster/Lamb) Can't Be Done (Rossi/Frost) Too Close To The Ground (Parfitt/Bown) No Contract (Parfitt/Bown) Win Or Lose (Rossi/Frost) Marguerita Time (Rossi/Frost) Your Kind Of Love (Lancaster) Stay The Night (Rossi/FrostMiller) Going Down Town tonight (Johnson)
In the Army Now
Rollin' Home (John David) Calling (Rossi/Frost) In Your Eyes (Rossi/Frost) Save Me (Rossi/Parfitt) In The Army Now (Bolland/Bolland) Dreamin' (Rossi/Frost) End Of The Line (Patrick/Parfitt) Invitation (Rossi/Young) Red Sky (John David) Speechless (Ian Hunter) Overdose (Williams/Parfitt)
So, we arrive at the first album by the revamped Quo! The last album by the band containing Alan Lancaster verses the first album by the band containing Rhino. Neither classics in the grand scheme of things, both of their time. I know we've been discussing them both separately, but have a vote and let us know how you compare them.
Review
There isn't a review of Back to Back on All Music, but here is the review of In the Army Now by Dave Thompson. Not sure about it myself!! I think he likes the poppy side of Quo.
Almost four years after their last studio album, and two years after Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt agreed to relaunch the hitherto moribund band, Status Quo bounced back with an album that came as close as Christmas to restating the glories that most fans believed were buried a decade earlier. The title track sets things off in the way they mean to go on, a romping cover of a Bolland & Bolland number that could not have been further from the Quo norm if it had tried. But the band make it its own, and then keep on sparking, through an excellent cover of Ian Hunter's "Speechless," on to the hit single "Dreamin'," and peaking with the seething "Overdose." Indeed, no matter how many crimes against their own reputation may have been committed by Quo earlier in the decade, In the Army Now offered salvation and forgiveness all round. And, just for a moment there, it felt like this was one reunion that really was going to improve on its prototype.

I know they are 2 of Quo's most poopy albums, but I like them when I listen to them. I think I'll vote for Army, but only just!

Voted for In the Army as I have that on tape in my car, and not sure that I've got Back to Back on any media (I have vinyl, CD and tapes).

In The Army Now all day long.
It's not exactly a classic but I liked it at the time and Back To Back remains my biggest disappointment in all my decades as a Quo fan. Certainly the biggest let down because expectations were still pretty high back in 1983. I tempered those expectations as the years went by so there was less disappointment further down the road even when an album was pretty poor. I find everything to be relative to when I first heard it.
One album is the sound of a band falling apart, the other is a band with renewed energy and enthusiasm.

IATN by quite a margin. One or 2 duff tracks, but that's considerably fewer than BTB.

I Ain't Complaining - I've just noticed that this was the last of the head to head polls you've staged. Think it's a shame you've never continued with these. I thought the results were quite interesting.

Two albums that I am very fond of, can remember receiving Back To Back for Christmas in 1983 when I was 14 and playing it to death, there was no divide amongst Quo fans that I knew back then (thankfully).
So Back To Back is a 40% better album for me, Too Close To The Ground is a fantastic ballad, just a shame that some people who love it, went on to slate the band for covering Restless which was very similar in style.

I thought the results were quite interesting. Hi. I rarely get on here these days. 99% of my posting was either done at lunchtime or during work time (I had my own office)! But I changed my job last April and am working in a school now, so I can't post during the day and have very little time outside of work. You could finish the series off for me Snakelady, that would be good.

It's always nice to have an explanation as to why and that nothing bad has happened, when somebody suddenly disappears. Usually people are simply gone. Don't have the time to do it now, but maybe in March .. .
