.. these were Rick's last days on earth. We know he had a shoulder injury, but otherwise was happy and looking forward to working on his solo album and other projects. So this thread shouldn't be about moaning him, but rather about all the positives he has left us - his music mainly. Let's talk about our favourite Rick songs ! Two of my favourite five have been recently added to the Quo song of the day thread: Good Sign Little White Lies Nightride For You Mystery Song These show too that Rick definitely wasn't one-dimensional, but could write in a variety of styles. The only one out of these that has ever been played in full live as far as I'm aware is For You - and that was merely for one UK tour. And I'd have loved to hear them live, all of them and not just the short MS snippet.

They played Nightride during the On The Level tour in '75. Dropped along with I Saw The Light for the next one unfortunately.
So many Rick songs that I love. But I'll give you 10 of the best he has a writing credit for.
O Baby; Forty Five Hundred Times; Backwater; Little Lady; Coming And Going; Take Me Away; Familiar Blues; Good Sign; Hold Me; Go Go Go;
There are obviously dozens more but these are not a bad legacy! In fact, that would make a bl00dy good album.
I don't think any of the band are one-dimensional but very often it depends on who they are writing WITH.

I'll come back to this one later but the first song that jumped into my mind was All The Reasons.
There will be more though, many more.
And here was me thinking that oeuvre was French for "open"

And here was me thinking that oeuvre was French for "open" Open is ouvert in French but the verb can indeed sound very similar: open the door = ouvre la porte - so you remembered well. And to return to Rick: It's interesting how we perceive songs as Rick's (or Francis' or..) songs, when most of them are co-written and many times with other band members. Big Fat Mama is Rick's song - no doubt about that for me, despite us not knowing what or how big his contribution was in the writing process. I didn't mention it as I don't like the album version, but it's such a great and powerful live song. Same as I consider Little Miss Nothing Francis' song, basically the same, just the other way round. Rick definitely had the Quo knack for melody that is so important for me and he was able to turn it into a beautiful ballad like For You, Too Close To The Ground .. - into a catchy pop tune i.e. Little White Lies (I remember how proud he was of the song at the time) - or into a perfect rock song - prime examples Mystery Song or Good Sign. Rick may not have written much and not enough to carry a whole Quo album - and yep, he wrote some awful tunes as well - but overall he added welcome diversity and quality to most Quo albums. His music will live on.
