Long way to go for a gig but its always worth it when Mr Edwards is playing.
We actually had VIP tickets so we were in the venue for 17:45 picking up our 'free' merch and were treated to soundchecks by Rhino's Revenge and support band Quo No (Alan Crooks band). Rhino went round talking to everyone and signing whatever anyone wanted signed and posing for 'selfies'.
Quo No were great fun and played about an hour's set list consisting mainly of songs you'd only hear if you played the CD's! They cranked up with the opening bars of Caroline and within 10 seconds had driven into Shady Lady. Great stuff and a real surprise. I recall The Way It Goes and I Saw The Light in there as well. Really good set and they got the crowd going.
Rhino came on about 9pm and he has put together a band of considerable quality. All 4 members are top notch. I can't remember the entire set or any sort of order but I think he started with I'm A Rocker followed by My Name Is Stan. Most of his usual Quo numbers were in there; Bad News, Obstruction Day, Bellavista Man, Get Out Of Denver, Two Way Traffic were all played as was Paper Plane and Jam Side Down.
Both of his solo albums shared the limelight; Jungle Love, Mine All Mine, Spend Spend Spend, Famous, New New New, Secretary and Busy Doing Nothin' all got an airing. They also did an off the cuff rendition of Roll Over Beethoven as an encore. Rhino said they had never played it before but it was in homage to the first time he ever played anything live to anyone at the age of 11. It was good as well.
He came on to a recording of All The Girls Love A Ba$tard. The only tracks he omitted that I especially like were Republican, Cougar and One Note Blues. But you never know what you're going to hear at a Rhino gig so we were well happy. And he can't play everything!
It was a great night. My wife said that the wine bordered on the undrinkable, even with lemonade in it, so I stuck to bottled beer. Irritatingly, the bar didn't open till half past seven so we were in there for almost 2 hours before we could cool down and it closed almost as soon as Rhino finished. The only down side really. An evening lasting about 5½ hours with a bar open for only 3 of them. Don't you just love the enigma that is licensing hours
London was humid and chaotic - as always. The rail journeys there and back were uneventful, if a bit uncomfortable, and we got back home on Saturday night tired but sated.
These gigs may be small but I cannot recommend them highly enough.
