Just got the new Q mag and it has a big Weller spread, one of the questions asks about Ricks Passing.
" I was upset when he died. Quo were the first band I saw live in 1972. He was a local lad from Woking, My old man was mates with Ricky's dad and he used to help us out, give us bits of equipment and that. He was a lovely fella. "

Yep, have read positive statements from Paul about Rick before. Wasn't there an amp he got from Rick and never returned .. ?

Most of what he said in "Q" is on the Hello Quo film but nothing wrong in repeating it to a larger audience. I was never a big fan of The Jam - bits and pieces here and there - but I've always been quite keen on Weller as a solo artist. Much more experimental, especially in recent years. The fact he was asked about Rick means that someone at the rag (for once) has done a bit of research.

Incidentally, had a listen to Paul Weller's new album ( A Kind Revolution) and it's pretty good. His voice has matured hugely and his choice of material, as always, can be interesting. Worth a spin, pop pickers.

I've never really been a fan of either The Jam (too fast, too aggressive) nor The Style Council but always thought Paul Weller was a decent enough bloke. Think his heart is in the right place.
Don't know much about his solo stuff but I think "You Do Something To Me" is wonderful.

I have a hits album of his and the Jams and a couple of solo albums so not loads really, but I do have a lot of respect and admiration for the work he has done. He deserves his success I think, good songwriter with a good voice.

He's can be more experimental than a lot of people think. The album Sonik Kicks is off the scale weird and is like an experiment in sound in places as much as anything. The Style Council were everything I didn't like at that time in the 80's. All smooth and bland. I remember they followed Quo at Live Aid and the atmosphere dropped in the blink of an eye! But as a solo artist, Paul Weller has proven to be very good indeed.
