I'm actually not sure this is how a tribute should be done. They should at least have given their guests a bit of time to prepare for their contributions. Bob Young obviously was so doped up during the 70s that he can't remember which song he wrote with whom and when - mixing up Mystery Song and Paper Plane ! - and John and Gillie agreeing with him instead of putting him right. Or Down Down, the archetypical Francis song .. And had they given them some time to prepare we might have gotten some real anecdotes instead of 'yeah, he was funny and nice' more or less. And we might've got more diverse Rick songs instead of everybody mentioning the first that sprang to mind, LOAI.
RPJ came across most genuine with his more differentiated picture of his dad. Rick being generous and caring on the one hand and competitive, putting his son down on the other. Rick could be lovely, but he wasn't all the time and not to everybody. Sounds far better and more realistic and human than mere praise IMO.

They had an allocated time slot and it was recorded in advance... I think it was perfectly done.
I disagree strongly on everybody mentioning Living On An Island because it was the "first that sprang to mind"... It's a great and classic Rick song loved by many.
Bob made a slight mistake on a song name... are you really going to chop his head off over that, and the fact John or Gillie didn't correct him?
Funny Rossi couldn't give two minutes of his time to be involved... But then again why would he? It's all far too macho for his liking, and not enough accordion... or will he have been busy rehearsing that static set with the "better than ever" sounding Quo.
What would you have preferred instead of the nice comments towards Rick? He was a horrid man! Absolute monster?

Just finished listening to it and I think it's alright, more or less what I expected to be honest. Must have been quite a task to edit it all down so that it could fit into the time allocated.
I take it Bob is referring to Mystery Song and not Paperplane?
Out of the songs played, the only one that surprised me was Down Down. I don't really associate that song with Rick. I think some songs are real band efforts such as ROLD, Roadhouse Blues etc, Mystery Song, Rain and LOAI are, for me Rick songs, I think Down Down has Francis all over it and that's why I was surprised to hear that one.
Wise move to keep the recorded interview with RJP until last. That's the one that I enjoyed listening to the most. He offered a bit of perspective that wasn't really offered by anyone else.
Don't think Gillie having the dig at Francis was necessary.
Does anyone know if Francis was asked to contribute?

To me, live, Down Down I really associate with Rick...the sheer power on the outro, how he's hammering his Tele...I could understand the choice!

Good for you if you think it was perfectly done, I think it was OK, but could've been better. Yes, LOAI is a classic Rick song, but had people been given the time they could've come up with other great Rick songs too for a bit of variety - Big Fat Mama and 4500x were the obvious omissions, no Little Lady or One Man Band, Shine On would've been fitting .. Instead Accident Prone, Down Down and Paper Plane were played. Nobody chops Bob's head of, but it was a mistake that could've been avoided in a pre-recorded contribution. Had Francis mixed up writing partners and years apart - say he wrote Big Fat Mama with Bernie Frost - he'd be torn to pieces. How do you know Francis had even been asked ? Or maybe it was recorded during the band's recent tour and he simply wasn't available at the time ? Plus dropping the words 'macho' and 'accordion' in connection with him - that is an unnecessary dig IMO. - But I'm sure it was only meant as a joke and as it's merely Francis, it's OK. What RPJ said about his dad was wonderful and the highlight of the interview, see my post above. Just because someone doesn't think everything about this tribute show was great doesn't mean they think it shouldn't have been done at all or that Rick was a horrid man. It's just putting it a little bit into perspective. The show wasn't absolutely perfect and Rick wasn't either. Nobody is.

I think this sort of thing will drag on for a while. Which is a shame but not unexpected or even unjustified. Rick's contribution to the band (and rock music generally) was almost immeasurable; in terms of songwriting of course but also as a very iconic member of an iconic band. I think it maybe seems to many that he is being ignored as the band carry on. It seems that way to me a bit as well to be honest but I have to look beyond that; look behind it. And give them the benefit of any doubt. That he is in their thoughts as he is in ours. What he was like as a man, a person, is almost irrelevant. Not to those who really knew him, obviously, but it should be to fans of the band. I was lucky enough to meet him a few times (mostly briefly) as I'm sure many of you did but no way did I know him. And he didn't know me. Probably thought I was just a sad old Quo fan. Oh well, maybe he did know me then He will have had flaws that he didn't show in public; we all do. But drugs and alcohol will have emphasised these flaws. Maybe even created many of them. I don't envy Francis one little bit talking about Rick and every time he is interviewed he will be asked several questions about their relationship. That must be really hard to deal with. Because he is now the lone spokesman. No one else within the band or the camp is going to be asked, are they? Luckily his music lives on. That pretty much makes him immortal. Which we all knew he was anyway.
