This started with a question from Ive Parfitt on another string. Snakelady has put a new box at the foot of the home page which shows who is online and gives a few stats. I like it. One of the most interesting things to me is that it shows the number of guests, Usually this is surprisingly high. Do we think these are members browsing before they log on to comment, members of other MBs trawling for gossip or the merely curious? :confused4:

Hi gogs, think this is the first time I've spoken to you on here, so... welcome The guest number, as far as I'm aware, is made up of some members who are logged on but are 'invisible' (like myself at the moment - I've chosen to make my online status invisible, so the stats will read me as a guest rather than as a member. It's also that in some cases, some do read before logging in (I do that myself sometimes too), and of course ones who aren't members may take a look in from time to time just as happens in any fora. I remember when I was helping out with admin, this question was asked and we asked proboards and they said the number setting isn't really anything to go by. It registers different numbers depending on who is the one reading - so, say, if you or me were reading the Quo side then it might register one viewing, but if a member of admin is reading it, then it registers it as about 5 reading (silly, I know, it's a proboards thing). Of course this might have changed in the last year or two but that's how it was in the past. The numbers are just to be taken with a slight pinch of salt. I agree with you too in that I also like being able to see the stats

Thank you Antigone, useful to know. I must now learn how to tag members in response!

gogs - How to tag someone: Simply type @ and right behind it the username - which isn't always the name displayed with posts. You can find the usernames in the members list. .. and to answer your first question, well more or less - there aren't any exact figures: The vast majority of members never post, but merely come here to read. Part of them will therefor not bother to lock in, but most simply always stay locked in. And then there's a much larger number of readers only who never consider becoming a member. The viewing figures of threads usually show for 1 person responding, you get dozens or hundreds merely reading. Which in turn can become frustrating for the one who posted.
