So did the (Quo)-world need yet another cover album ? The record company thought yes, but the fans were definitely fed up with the type, even if it was quite different compared to the first two. We had been longing for Quo, the rock band, and the HT album the year before plus the gigs from the time gave us what we wanted, more or less. We now know that its success took the record company by surprise, but they were quick to react and pushed the Riffs album, that had been recorded along with HT, back a year to 2003. I didn't mind it that much - after all I knew the band had been forced into recording it. So it didn't put me off again, I simply kind of ignored it. The covers weren't all that bad either, a few good rocky songs amongst them. What was completely superfluous were the rerecordings of their own songs. Who in their right mind would think that anybody would want dozens of versions of RAOTW or WYW ?? ???
Instead I kept going to various gigs per year at the time, enjoyed those and very occasionally listened to a handful of songs from the Riffs album.

Can't remember when I last played this album, I didn't pick any Quo tracks, but I picked 2 cover tracks, I Fought The Law, On The Road Again and Don't Bring Me Down.

Only ever listened to it when I first bought it and have no intention of listening again. No vote.

It was Riffs that really gave the song a new dimension for me, taking a great song to even higher levels. I was miffed when the FF didn't play it back in 2013 but then even more miffed in 2014 when they did play it, as per the original, which just sounded flat in comparison to more recent versions, to my ears anyway. I know, I'm weird!

Have to agree with bam on this one. Only Caroline and JW for me, In both cases this studio recording was very close to how the band were playing the songs on stage at the time, and were to me sufficiently different to the originals to be worthwhile. Curiously I didn't feel the same about DTD, WYW and RAOTW. And I didn't (still don't) like the other covers. No accounting for taste eh?

An album that got no attention, deliberately no promotion and no credit from any quarter. And rightly so. It was used as a bargaining tool by the music company to allow the band to record their own material. Of course, it backfired on them big time; which must have been quite satisfying in a way for the band. I remember reading an article about it at the time which said that when the recording of this latest covers album was touted to the band and the conditions attached Francis walked out of the room and didn't come back. Effectively it was blackmail. I bought the album in Bristol the day after the gig there and before flying home. It had a DVD with it so I was happy enough with that. But it’s not an album I play much. Selected tracks; VERY selective! So it's those I've chosen. Because I like them. And there's only the two. On The Road Again; Don't Bring Me Down;
I think they make a right good stab at both. The latter is one of only about half a dozen ELO songs I've ever liked and the former suits Francis's vocals down to the ground. Rick's guitar on it is very atmospheric as well. The reason they re-recorded a few of their own songs is because this covered the promotional aspect that the company would have insisted upon. They were in the live set so that was the compromise no doubt. Thankfully they dropped the whole Rockin' All Over The Riffs nonsense. That was a close shave

I really like Riffs- I know I'm in the minority.
I wish they had recorded Heavy Traffic in the same studio as the sound is much better on Riffs- I think the guitars sound great.
One thing- some of the re-records were done long before Riffs.
That version of Whstever You Want was performed on This Morning almost a year prior to even Heavy Traffic being released.
There had been a legal issue, I believe with Alan complaining about the original version on which he performed being used to promote the band on other projects .
Hence the re-record

Of all the "covers" albums, this one is probably my favourite, although I don't play it all that often now.
I voted for Caroline, I Fought the Law, Takin' Care of Business, On the Road Again, Don't Bring Me Down, Junior's Wailing and Pump It Up.
Probably sacrilege to some but these versions of Caroline and Junior's are my favourite studio recordings of them, particularly Caroline, think they sound great. The Hello version of Caroline has always sounded a tad slow to me.
Agree with the point that Cammy made about the sound on this one compared to HT, think the guitars sound much better here.
Nice to see some new names appearing on here.

I admit I'm surprised Caroline is doing so well. Maybe it's down to me though and due to the fact that I'm so fed up with it that I automatically skip it whenever it comes on.

It's probably because it is reasonably close to how it's played live rather than the Hello version (longer intro etc). Equally it's possibly doing relatively well because most of the tracks are so poor. Most comments rate this album poorly and the band probably wouldn't mind on this occasion!

I think I've only heard this album once. And that was one too many times.

My fav of this one was the cover of Takin Care Of Business. As I had not heard that one before at the time and Bob is back on the Harp on that one. Yes the BTO original is better now I have heard it but I still like Quo's version.
