They were a great band with one of the most definitive front men of all time, the late & truly great Freddie Mercury , so many great songs and albums.

I absolutely loved them as a teenager. Their first 3 albums are outstanding and, for me, easily their best. After that (post Bohemian), it all became a bit overblown, anthemic and even bombastic at times. The Freddie show. So although they still produced some great stuff throughout the 80's, it was a bit hit and miss for me.
I only ever saw them live once; in 1976 at the Edinburgh Festival. I think A Day At The Races was their current album at the time. The next one, News Of The World was the last one I bought. The track Sleeping On The Sidewalk remains a favourite of mine. Cannot stand We Are The Champions; never could.

Yeah their 1st 3 albums were def the best albums, following albums were still good though. I only saw them once, they were on the same bill as Quo, they blew Quo away, I have to say that

Loved Queen, except for their last 3 or 4 albums. Saw them at Knebworth and it was the best thing I have ever seen.

How about this for a pairing.... It might be completely kitschy, but isn't it wonderful when the whole audience sings ? I actually just imagined Freddy singing Most Of The Time. Guess Quo would've cracked the States with him ..

Interesting one about Freddie singing MOTT I think that could be very good. And that could be a good “ Quo songs you think could be enhanced by other singers” topic Not sure about the states thing tho.

Always thought Quo trying to crack America was like taking sand to the desert. Although, to be fair, the British blues boom in the 60's somehow had an impact. And the Rolling Stones basically took American music straight back to them. As for Freddie, he was a fabulous showman and ultimately became a very good and powerful vocalist. I know this will sound a bit strange but I preferred Queen when his voice (and his body) were much weedier and it wasn't the Freddie show. I'd take the Hammersmith shows over what came later all day long. But I get used to being in a minority. I'm a Quo fan

The first three albums were pretty good, after that, approach with care.
And live, overblown, and any band that walks off the stage to leave a tape playing, forget it!!

Same here. They had a few songs I loved in later years too, but I've always very much preferred Tie Your Mother Down over Bohemian Rhapsody. Or Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy over Bicycle Race .. An 80s song I did like was Freddie's duet with David Bowie, Under Pressure. Despite Freddie having been the far better singer I've always liked that last longer part of David the most for its haunting quality though.

Very good documentary about Freddie on Sky Arts last night. I just stumbled across it after the Belgium game. He was quite a character but not the person his public persona or the press when he passed would have you believe.

How about this for a pairing.... I am sorry, but that is a nightmare to me. I know I am in a minority here, however that doesn't me I'm wrong. I need some Dead Kennedys to rectify the balance.

I saw Queen twice, first at the Southend Kursaal in December '73, where they supported Mott The Hoople and Queens set list had quite a few rock n roll covers in it and I wasn't that impressed, but 13 years later at a slightly bigger venue, Wembley Stadium, they were brilliant and blew the support band Quo of the stage.

Yeah, they supported Mott The Hoople in Edinburgh as well. I bought their debut album on the strength of it. They kept things like Jailhouse Rock and Shake Rattle & Roll in the set for a few years. I thought they peaked with Sheer Heart Attack but I'm well aware I'm in a minority - worldwide! - with that one
