Yes I love this one too. After TW and DS albums, it was the sort of song we'd not had in a long time!

When the album came out it didn't do much for me and I skipped it more often than not. These days though I quite like its dark quality, although to me Rick's best song writing effort, which hasn't been topped since then is Little White Lies. I remember an interview from the time in which he explained how much time and effort he had put into LWL, a lot more than usual, and when the interviewer said that it showed in the end result, Rick was happy and added he was really proud of it.

I love Little White Lies! I know it's a little ditty, but when it first came out the solo and the outro used to make my hairs stand up; it just did something to me! I think Rick said it took him a year (he's the sole writing credit)....a year well spent in my opinion.

I couldn't care less whether it's a pop or rock song or whatever - it's a beautiful song is all that matters.

Shine On is a real favourite of mine. I was knocked out by it when I first heard it and thought at the time it was the best Quo track I'd heard in years; possibly decades. And I still hold that view. I never got to hear it live. I was always a bit miffed by that. It has a dark, almost menacing feel to it; certainly the first minute or two before it takes off. A not dissimilar feel to something like Coming And Going. Both Rick songs and it shows. Good as the Rossi/Young combination is, they'd never write something in this vein which is why Rick's contributions (and collaborations) are so important. If he doesn't write for an album or contributes very little it leaves a noticeable gap ( Dog Of Two Head excluded I have to add in all fairness!). Great stuff.

This song is one of, if not my most favourite songs from the post-'86 period. I listened to the album and instantly picked out this and Making Waves as being stand-out tracks for me, far better than the abysmal offerings released since Ain't Complaining.
Shine On is still one of my favourites, and as Billy said above, it's instantly recognisable as being a Rick Song - It's a pretty personal account of his angina attack and his consequent surgery, from what I read into it. And an excellent song.
Rick Roper.
