A festival of tribute bands, Sunday's line-up was:
Red Hot Chilli Peppers Stereophonics The Clash Status Quo Foo Fighters Kasabian Guns n Roses
I've not been to a music festival before. Rock music played by rock musicians.
For the RHCP, a few (10-20) were standing in the area unofficially reserved for the non-existant mosh pit, and were happily watching/singing/jigging about. Then Stereo-Tonics appeared, and the number of standers/jiggers rose to around 50ish. The Clash didn't arrive but were replaced by The Pretenders' tribute band, Talk Of The Town, who were superb. Although superb, the "jigging/standing area" was empty all bar the last 3 or 4 songs - around 20 or so by then.
Then State Of Quo were introduced (by Austin Powers no less). Good golly miss Molly, by the time the drone had finished 100+ were up on their feet. I'd managed to have a brief chat with Ian Hill (Francis) prior to the set and he said it was their comeback gig after Paul's (Rick) recent heart attack. Did this slow them down any? ... Not a bit of it! I've no idea how Paul managed to perform as he did (he looked done in by the time the last track Down Down was about to start) and even Ian said to the crowd by then that he (Ian) was knackered!
The number of standers/jumpers/headnodders/air-guitarists/clappers/Quo-oh-oh-oh-ers (children & adults) rose to around 300+ I reckon. The lads absolutely stole the show by a country mile.
Ian had said beforehand that because it wasn't a Quo gig, they had to play "the hits" (which they don't normally focus on apparently). They still managed to chuck in Backwater, Mad About The Boy, Softer Ride though (and maybe some other album tracks I've forgotten. Oh yeah, Don't Waste My Time of course).
And despite there still being 3 bands still to come, including Guns n Roses, loads of folk left after SoQ had finished.
Really well done Paul, Ian and co.

Nice report, Rich - glad you had a great time ! - And it's always good to hear Quo were the highlight of the show, even if it were 'merely' tribute acts To be honest, I only know a few Clash songs beside Quo, the rest is totally unknown to me ..

You're very good at writing gig reports, Rich - that was a lovely festival and I'm glad we headed down to see it - I'd definitely do other music festivals now that I realise what they're like - I loved the outdoor aspect of it, and as you say - when State of Quo came on and the front of the field (mosh pit? Do you make these words up or is this really what's it's called? ... yeah I know it's really what it's called... ) - watching everyone get up when they could hear the guitars and drumming, and then vocals starting up, oh that was good! BTW - I asked to hear Slow Train the next time they gig and they said 'and hear it ye shall' P.S - Rain was another surprise! I've never been fond of that song (sounds too downbeat and repetitive usually) but on that day, outdoors, with the sun shining, and State of Quo playing it... well, that was a bit of alright! Brilliant, relaxed, gig - loved it, thank you. Well done that band!

Thanks Kathrin Yep, it was great to see Quo's music being so warmly received by so many. I bet some had a bit of a shock that they were that heavy and rock-y. I'll refrain from confirming it just now, as I'll be seeing Status Quo soon, but I'd be surprised if I prefer watching SQ to SoQ these days. I'm pretty sure I'd be far more keen to watch this tribute band than Status Quo tbh. I suppose a lot of that feeling is self-inflicted concerning Quo and because of their stagnant set list (especially the second half !). They drive the fans away and have to replace them with the hits-crowd. A different set (even from a tribute) has got be so much more exciting. There's a reason why Caroline, WYW .. do rather badly in polls these days: People are sick and tired of hearing them. Slow Train on the other hand would be so wonderful as an encore i.e.

I think the change in the setlist a little by Status Quo helped that along Rich, because you didn't know exactly which song was coming on when albeit most of them you knew would be, there were some surprises in what came and how it was played and received
