By many this album is seen as the end of 'Quo, the rock band' and it's the first album with Andy a band member, even if he still wasn't featured on band photos and it took another year till his first songwriting contributions appeared on an album. We all know now about the sound problems due to the number of songs, that it was the first time an outside producer was used for an album after trying it out successfully (from a commercial POV) with Roger Glover on Wild Side Of Life and all this with the thought of cracking the US in mind. At the time though I wasn't aware of any of that. I had only become a Quo fan with the WSOL single, so it was the first new album for me, although I had already heard the Live-album and others from the back catalogue. I simply enjoyed the album for what it was, a bunch of great songs, with some not so great ones as well and even a few skip songs. Still it's like that for me with all Quo albums, there isn't a single album out there from which I love all the songs. It's the number of outstanding tracks that make it and in this respect, ROATW will always be among my Top 8 favourite albums with 4 songs fitting the category for me. Those would be the first and the last two album tracks, plus I've always liked Baby Boy as well. Then there are a few I can take or leave, but won't skip, like For You or Who Am I ?, the title track (although these days I can't stand it anymore due to extreme overexposure) and maybe Too Far Gone. The rest I used to skip from the start and nothing has changed up till today. Oh yep, and there were these lovely band photos included, which me and my friend would look at while listening to the album playing - her being a Rick girl and me very much preferring Francis .. Happy days they were, us sitting on the window sill in her room, raving on about the gig and the guys while listening to the music. So with it being a favourite album of mine, I'm now really looking forward to the release of John Eden's remix. Let's hope it'll happen asap !

I don't think there was any doubt that it was a watershed album in many ways; and deliberately so. But like you say, much of the story behind it was completely unknown probably until the advent of the internet. Even then, much of it is based on the memory of those involved and also decades after the fact. I like most of the tracks on it but I've plumped for two in the survey; Who Am I? which I think has turned into a real gem over the years and Rockers Rollin' which, regardless of the dodgy sound, is still a top notch Quo belter. Hopefully the remix will bring out Francis's solos a bit better. There are only two tracks I'm not mad keen on; the title track which I've never really liked all that much and Dirty Water which, ironically, is a bit of a fan fave for some reason. Never really understood why but my loss I guess. The remaster gave the album a bit of a boost and it was an improvement. Actually, so was the first CD release back in the day compared to the vinyl. But it's going to take the remix to bring out the best in it I think. The biggest scare I got was the change in the Quo logo/font which I first noticed with the pic sleeve single. If ever there was a sign that they wanted to change that was it!

I only really don't rate Baby Boy, but felt Dirty Water/Hold You Back were the low point of many a gig & that's tainted them for me now. The rest I quite like, to varying degrees.

I can relate to looking at band photos Its not a surprise with me, but it was Francis that signposted my way to Quo - before I had bought any album
The RAOTW tour saw my introduction to gigs, but it was not the first album I had bought. By the time the album was released I already had collected OTL, BFY, Piledriver and Hello (from my sister as the first album I owned) and the Golden Hour compilation. Oh, plus Quo on cassette
It was great going to the first gig knowing many of the early songs
I was so blown away by the gig experience I didn't really take too much notice of the fact that the sound on the album was much tinnier. It was obviously different, but I was more interested in having a great party time and going to as many Hammy gigs as I could with my P/T job earnings at weekends whilst studying at college than analysing album production
Those days it was possible to quickly save up for a gig with just weekend work
I loved Dirty Water straightaway and have done since HYB live was great too and still a song I rate today.

Looking at the poll, I admit I never got this fascination for Rockers Rollin' and I remember it charted rather lowly, so obviously I wasn't the only one .. The pictures I mentioned may not have been from the RAOTW album (maybe the Live-album ?) , it was just we spent hours looking at them while listening to the RAOTW album. It's what teenage girls do ..

One of my choices was Rockers Rollin' but it was never released as a single in the UK.

I think that this album has a very good two opening tracks in Hard Time and Can't Give You More. Maybe my favourite track 1 & 2 combination of any Quo album.
Some tracks I'm not so keen on: e.g. Baby Boy
Unlike some of you I never get tired of the title track. It isn't Quo's best-known (cover) song for no reason.
The last two tracks are very good once again, and that's remarkable because I often only like one of the two last tracks on a Quo album.

On the remix it's supposedly going to open with Hold You Back & Baby Boy then close with You Don't Own Me & Hard Time. I'd say Quo has best opening & closing pairings of all: Backwater, Just Take me ; Lonely Man, Slow Train

I would agree with that Dennis, regarding the best opening/closing pairings on any Quo album. But IMO the album which has the best opening/closing tracks on side 1 & 2 of a vinyl edition album, must go to Hello! SIDE 1: Roll Over Lay Down & Blue Eyed Lady. SIDE 2: Caroine & Forty-Five Hundred Times.

No, I think they were from the On the Level gatefold sleeve. I remember them well. Looking at Quo pictures for hours - it's what (some) teenage girls do... Unless she means the 4 large individual pictures that were on the 2 record sleaves on the Live! album?

Yep, those were the ones ! Do you mean those four enlarged individual photos that were inside the sleeve with the LPs? I had them on my bedroom wall. And now they're gone... You could have had merely two of the guys up as they were printed from both sides .. I seem to remember Francis and Rick were on one and Alan and John on the other ? Could be wrong though, but I think we used to hold them between us looking from opposite directions ..

As soon as the needle hit the the first track I heard something was very wrong,so I picked it up and looked at the treble and bass 'wheels' on my stereo to see if something was wrong there. Then put the needle down for the second time and then everything went black.
I was 14 years old,it was the biggest disappointment in my life up til then and I still remember it like it was last week. I'll rest my case....

Last chance to vote and have your say on this thread before I move it to the past Quo cups section.

The overall outcome comes close to my own preferences - that's a rare thing. :lolflg:
