We went to see Rhino's Revenge in Duisburg last night. It took place in a youth club, the
Parkhaus (house at the park) - tea kitchen, loo in the basement, you get the picture. The room had a bar, a small stage, two French windows that allowed the smokers to go outside to have a smoke in the garden. It was just big enough for about 150 people standing. There were white and coloured lights. It all made for a nice and cozy atmosphere. Many of the 'usual suspects' were around.
Support were Pure Quo from Germany. To me, they were the main act of the night. They played all the great Quo songs from before 1976, the only 'newer' song being Whatever You Want. They were brilliant and had everybody rocking.
They played for about one hour, then Rhino's sons came on with their band The Charge. And what a fantastic young band they are. They only played for about 20 minutes, but they blew the roof off the place. Purest hard rock.
Needless to say we bought the EP for € 5.
Then at about 10, Rhino came walking through the room, a glass of red wine in his hand and chatting to people on his way to the stage.
Right into the second or third song he had massive sound problems. They asked the guys from Pure Quo for help. No guitar techs on stage there.
Everything was fine after that.
They played a variety of styles and it was as if Rhino was telling us bits and pieces from his every-day life.
He was very enthusiastic and used his arms a lot to underline what he was singing about. A bit too much for my liking.
The Quo songs they did sounded strange to my ears, but everyone around me was rocking away.
Rhino was in a very good mood, made a lot of jokes, emptying a bottle of red wine in the hour he was on and asking for more when they did the encore.
I thought his singing voice was OK.
Hubby enjoyed himself a lot. We had already got the CD at the merch stand at the entrance for € 15, signed on the disk itself plus on the cover. And it's number 480 out of 500.
Pure Quo were the highlight of the night to me, though, and I hope I'll be able to see them again soon.
