Hello, A bit late, but we have not been home long. Ain't complaining beat me to it , and a good review it is. Saves me typing out the play list.
Off we set yesterday at about mid-day and got to the Clumber Park Hotel just after 5, bloody traffic. All checked in, not seen a smile on any of the staffs faces.
No taxis to the gig, all saying the same thing, blaming last year when cars were taking over an hour to get out. Simple answer, charge more. The hotel not helpful at all on this score.
We don't normally like to take the car to these outdoor venues, but needs must. Anyway it's the models car. Trouble is, it weighs just under 2 ton and is crap in mud or snow !!!!!!!!! :dig:
Once we entered the park it was about 2/3 miles till we arrived at the stage area. Easy parking,,,,,,,,,,,,,Oi hold on a minute, stop scrolling forward I will get there in me own time, now where was I.
Good job you didn't take us Mac as you could have only gone in so far.
The area laid out well, toilets etc and food and drink down on side. The stage seemed smaller in height than usual, had a screen each side.
Got the a bit earlier than usual and there was the first band on, Baba Jack, good blues band, sang Black Betty as the blues song it is. They finished, time for a drink This is part of Sherwood Forest, I didn't realise how big it is. No wonder the Sheriff of Nottingham could never catch Robin Hood. Although the band of merry men must still be around, £7.00 for a glass of champagne, the model said, "they are still robbing from the rich" Must have the wrong people :lolflg:
On came Toseland, becoming a regular support.
We bumped into a fella from Holland, we first met last year in Zurich then the non gig the next day and again at Doncaster. Great to see him and his friend. We have been very lucky to have always met nice people at Status Quo gigs.
Time to get down the front, not a very large crowd and plenty of space.
It seemed to be a fair while before the band came on, then at about 9.30. on they strolled.
It must have been a nerve racking moment for Freddie but also a most memorable one. Slight delay, then straight into Caroline. I though to myself he's gonna be ok and I was right. Part way through Caroline We saw Rhino look over and say "you alright" lovely. Proud Dad.
A bit cold for Francis, my offer of some while ago to buy some thermals is still open Francis
I think the whole set went well, Rhino doing, Creeping, Andy on Whatever You Want The backing vocals again from Rhino, Andy and Leon. More involved than usual , Team spirit Freddie did not sing, and that was obviously the plan. What I thought was good, he never tried to copy Rick, just got on with his job. You could see he was shy, but hell that was no problem for the crowd. There was another, Dad keeping his eye on his boy moment, On a few songs, when you have all 4 on guitar they all walk toward the audience at once, Freddie was a bit behind and Rhino waving his arm to get him to move up, great stuff Rhino
Freddie you done well, let no one tell you different.
Good set, a few changes, Don't Waste My Time back in, like it. Encore; Burning Bridges, got everyone jumping. You know this bit, but this time Francis sang, "I've just escaped this Ricky in my ear" Not for long my dear Francis,, Guess what the last song was ! ! but a fuller version. All finished just after 11
A good night. Rick, of course you were missed, but look at it this way, you gave someone a one off chance to be part of the greatest rock band.
Said goodbye to our Dutch friends, ready for the drive out.
It is all gravel type tracks to drive on, and pitch black. still in the forest, we came to a crossroads a sign saying exit, so we carried on, no one in front, but when I looked in the mirror we were followed by a fair few cars. Suddenly it was a dead end, and all the cars breaking behind us. I done a quick Starsky and Hutch all in the mud, bloody car struggled a bit, told you it was heavy. As we trailed back we passed at least 30 or so cars that had followed us, did we feel sorry for them, hell no, we had a good laugh. Sorry if you was one of them,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, not really
Back to the hotel, imagine closing a hotel bar at 11, we arrived back about 11.30, and one of the bar staff did serve us. But that was it. Breakfast before we left, well the toast was ok. Clumber Park Hotel, teach your staff how to smile, except for the lady behind the bar and the lady that took our breakfast order.
Drive home a lot better, just under 3 hours.
We just love gigging.
A bit of a rest now, well as far as Status Quo goes anyway Next stop on this ROCKING MERRY GO ROUND, MANNHEIM. Looking forward to it. Soft drinks or beers Kathrin :lolflg: just doing an edit. Sorry Inna nearly forgot, the weather was fine, despite young Francis saying it was cold well not quite.
Enjoy Life

Once again you manged to put a smile on my face with your report and colourful descriptions, Michael. Reading through these only comes second to being at the gig itself. I'm glad all went well and Freddie got through it without probs. I'm sure all of them gave their best to make up for Rick not being able to take part. A good business is a good team as well. - And you managed to prove that herd instinct is still featuring strongly in homo sapiens sapiens :lolflg: (Reminds me of the Party documentary and Rick wondering is it 'a herd of fans, a flock of fans .. ?' )

Curly, I was smiling for a while after having read your gig report for the first time. I'm still smiling now having read it again. You've got a great way of telling things. One can actually hear, see, feel and taste everything you wrote about. It's as if I'd been there, too. Some of your anecdotes made me laugh out loud. This is part of Sherwood Forest, I didn't realise how big it is. No wonder the Sheriff of Nottingham could never catch Robin Hood. Although the band of merry men must still be around, £7.00 for a glass of champagne, the model said, "they are still robbing from the rich"
or
I done a quick Starsky and Hutch all in the mud
Class. :lolflg:
So after having read all these great gig reviews I come to the conclusion that the one-off gig was a really good one, that it sounded like Quo, that the band played really well, that Francis was the man and that Freddie did a fantastic job, but never pretended to be Rick. Good on them.
Thank you Inna, makes it all worth while

That was a lovely read, Curly! As Tamara says, it's good to hear how it went for Freddie and lovely to hear of the moments between him and his dad. Great too how you put it in perspective with Rick having the gig off - that's a nice laid back attitude to have about it all. I agree with you too about the folk at the Status Quo gigs being the best crowds ever. I remember my first time walking into a pub near the Apollo (I forget what it's called but it's just round the corner and full of Quo fans). I knew no one there apart from Rich and Dale and I was petrified standing inside a bustling pub of rockers, but every single one of the people who jostled passed me was friendly and chatty and it really opened my eyes to trying newer things and to go back for more gigs

A belated post, mainly to say thanks Curly for such an entertaining read. As all have said, you've got a great knack of making reports come alive
Very well done to Freddie of course. And lovely to read of Rhino and Andy doing a couple of tracks live! I don't suppose there's any footage anywhere of them singing Creepin/Whatever You Want?
