If it hadn't been for alcoholprone putting this link www.wolkenkratzer-festival.de/ up on the IMB, I wouldn't have known. Status Quo playing just an hour away from here and for free - with lots of other stuff added as a bonus - yeah m0111 happy-dancing t2716

Hope you can make it Kathrin It seems the webmasters of the official Quo site are a bit behind with their updates. Gosh, Kathrin, maybe you'll be the first of this board to see the new Quo drummer. (Could be his warm-up gig for the summer tour dates)

(I'd be far too nervous for that, but having been a fan since 1970 I'll have my fingers firmly crossed for Bayern ) @ Marion - report to follow .. Just_Cuz_13

Where are you from - too far away or preferring to watch the footie? Not a big football fan, really, so I don't care who wins As for the Quo concert.... I wouldn't go anyway, because my hearing is too fragile these days to bear the volume. I can go to acoustic concerts, but no longer any rock concerts, alas

Or are you referring to the rumour from the "new drummer" thread? EDIT: just checked the official Quo Page: YES, THERE It IS: Quo's new drummer presented ! When I last checked this morning it wasn't there, but now it's official

Be lovely to have a report of the festival when you get the chance Kathrin, and of course how Quo, and Leon in particular, were. And yes, if the weather's anything like it is here (and it sounds like it is!) then how wonderful for you!

Ok then, before the suspense is killing you, here's my report from the skyscraper festival: We left at 2, dressed for a dry and hopefully sunny day even with temperatures around 15°C, in my case t-shirt and thin thermo jacket. We didn't drive straight to Frankfurt, but did a short detour to an electronics shop in Mannheim to get parts for my computer (it's still not working, don't ask ..). The sun obviously had never seen the forecast and decided to disappear somewhere around Darmstadt, never to be seen again yesterday.
In Germany's cities a disease is spreading called environment zones. As are most bigger cities, downtown Frankfurt is a green zone, while my turbo diesel car only has a yellow plaque. That meant we had to park further outside in some suburb, which is not that big a problem in Frankfurt, as the subway basically gets you everywhere and we bought us a family ticket for the day asap. Still, when you want to see something, you've got to walk and so that's what we did for most of the day. Not completely unsurprising I'm interested in architecture and so I dragged the family along from oneintersting (for me) site to the next, while the boys started to grow impatient (putting it mildly). Frankfurt is changing constantly and just like London it's a town of banks and money, which reflects in the architecture. These days it's the town with the most skyscrapers (18) in Germany and most of them quite impressive. The fact it was a festival meant, that the main roads were turned into pedestrian zones and crammed with people, and all kinds of food and beverages were sold in the streets. Then there were smaller stages with live bands from brass to boygroups or games for the whole family on, spread throughout the party zone plus the two main stages - one near the opera, the other, where Quo was due at 9, near the Hauptwache. Over time the sky turned grayer and grayer and temperatures went down a bit, so we finally found us a French café to warm up again with a hot chocolate, macarons and eclairs before we left for the Quo gig.
As we had done a bit of reconnaissance before, we knew how to best approach the location of the gig. Basically the stage was set up in front of a church right in the middle of one side of a wide square, but access was hindered by street cafés, the entrances to the subway and 1000s of people .. We arrived at 8.30 and when the fans of that screaming girl still on stage finally left, we managed to get into about fifth row of people between Francis' and Rick's mikes. There was a pocket of Quo fans around us, but most people (and I guess it were at least 10 000 in that square) were teenagers or in their twenties and probably only knew the hits or had no idea who the band was. There was a group of teenage boys behind us speculating about it going to be a Justin Bieber type act. The older fan to my right decided to look after them and to teach them a bit and about three songs in they were converted, created a great rock atmosphere for the rest of the gig and left as hardcore fans I dare say.
The band hadn't been able to do a proper soundcheck earlier so the crew did a provisional one, which led to the band coming on 20mins late. Well, unsurprisingly the set was the same as last winter and, just as I had expected Francis never mentioned it was the first gig of their new drummer. The sound was ok considering the circumstances and the band was tight as usual with Leon fitting in really well. Even my oldest son, who's a drummer as well, afterwards mentioned that the new drummer was really good. I took a few pics of the band, but mainly I was busy rocking. Rick once again proved his lack of anticipation concerning the weather and probably was the only person around to only wear a t-shirt. Francis never took off his zipped up fleece jacket and desperately tried to warm his fingers repeatedly. He didn't talk much, probably down to time constraints - the fireworks were due to start at 10.30 - but he did joke about us having to endure English weather. He was right, shortly after Rain it started to rain and within a few songs the few drops had turned into a massive downpour. When the gig ended, so did the rain - much to the amusement of the band - but although the audience were soaked by then, nearly everybody had stayed. The band sure have gained a few new fans with their performance. They even did an encore albeit only the short one - Rock'n'roll Music straight into BBJ - so the fireworks were delayed even more and only started after 11. We got us freshly roasted bratwurst rolls for a late dinner and made for the Frankfurt underground followed by a few blocks walk, which I was barely able to do .. half past midnight we were home again, finally. oregonian_winesmiley
Edit: Francis may not have mentioned the new drummer, but when the band waved their goodbyes at the end, Rhino pointed towards Leon and Andy put his arm around Leon's shoulder.

Nice report Kathrin ! Good that you had some fun. Status Quo, the next Justin Bieber act? Some critical fans have known that all along, I guess Good that the Quo Army is still able to recruit new young fans. Seems as Leon had a good premiere with the band. I think we should propose to Quo management that the next open air gigs should be advertised like this: 'Status Quo are: Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt, Rhino Edwards, Andy Bown, Leon Cave, and The Cloud' Hope you didn't catch a cold out there. bye

Kathrin, I assume that with the stage being located on a place within the town, there have been volume restrictions. Did you notice it being not as loud as indoors, and if so: did it help the sound? (For my ears, the different instruments melt into an undistinguishable mass of sound at very high volume. So I have been wishing they would turn the volume down a bit in favour for a better sound mix.)

Excellent report Kathrin, thanks But a shame about the weather Your poor boys, being dragged through Frankfurt by foot having to suffer the architecture tour! rofl Nice you all found yourselves a cafe though! Just_Cuz_13 "There was a group of teenage boys behind us speculating about it going to be a Justin Bieber type act." :oo: t1101 <<< The "older fan to your right" informing them otherwise ... Great to read Leon fitted in well, and had a good debut, and yes, good on Rhino for "bigging him up" to the crowd. And Andy for his support too. A BIG shame that Francis didn't feel the need to announce Leon as the new drummer, have to say I'm unimpressed by that. So no changes to the set then? Ah well, at least that would've confirmed you were watching the right band 107 Glad they went down well with the young crowd (not surprising though, most who watch them live seem to love them) oregonian_winesmiley

Thanks all for your kind words ! oregonian_winesmiley
I don't think there had been any noise restrictions in place beyond the usual limits - it was loud, very loud, but even people without earprotection were still able to hear well enough afterwards. Although - I can only speak for the area where we had been standing. Due to the sheer size of most buildings surrounding the square there was quite a bit of soundwave reflection (kind of an echo) going on. It didn't detract too much from the overall sound quality for us - but elsewhere it could've been completely different.
I forgot to mention - Leon did a drum solo as well, wonder what it's going to be called - does he have a nickname already ? Just_Cuz_13

Hmmm... The Killer is a tough name to follow. The Caveman springs to mind but doesn't really sound very respectful How about "The Drums of Leon" (as in Kings of Leon)

Great review of the gig, thanks for sharing and so glad to hear that some new young recruits were made. Sounds a bit like the Hyde Park gig where there was a very mixed crowd and a lot of Jessie J fans! I know they impressed a lot of people there and there were lots of positive comments afterwards e.g. "I didn't realise they were so good"! Shame the weather was not so good for you though
