Another one we did as a virtual project, the Intro chords (played superbly by Jim,Hardcorequo ) and the Intro Solo by myself, based more on the sound of the 91 RTYD version, Conversely to what Francis has said in the past you don't get sick of it and all that business, as we all know its Epic even after all these years, I call it 45 Billion times and I still wont be sick of it .
Anyway just a wee short Video this one, the screen splits in two when the Lead guitar comes in, Sorry about the Cuckoo flying about the room!.

Thanks for that Inna, much appreciated. Im not sure why the Cuckoo is in there at the end, he really should be flying about the Sub-Saharan Rainforest at this time of Year .

How was the rhythm guitar tuned?
I've always been under the impression that Rick plays it in open G with a capo on the 4th fret. That's how I've always done it anyway.

Sam the rhythm guitar is the B tuning as rick put it.
Tuning as follows 6this tuned to B ( rick uses .60 gauge) .56 min works fine The 5th string is Tuned up to B
The rest is left as standard.
BBDGBE.

Quoman UK is correct. The RTYD version is exactly as stated. Impossible on standard gauge strings.

But then you wouldn't be playing it the way Quo do, If you are going to the bother of replicating someone elses Music you have to do it to the best of your ability and that means using the proper tuning or else its blatantly disregarding something you know that is right for the sake of "ease", that would ultimately lead to you "knowingly" playing it wrong, Which would therefore not be "playing it to the best of your ability"!.
Rick uses heavy gauge strings and the BBDGBE tuning for 45HT so why wouldn't someone else who wanted to replicate it authentically?, Quo didn't play the Lead and the Rhythm together with the same Guitar, Why would anyone else.

Cos I was the only guitarist in the band... So finding a way to play lead and rhythm was essential. Most of the stuff we did was single guitar work which used that kind of playing anyway. I've never been interested in replicating things note for note... I always improvise the solos, and play it the way it comes naturally.

Better of writing your own songs then Sam . The vast majority of people who listen to any cover songs want to hear it the way the Band you are covering played it, not someone else's music they have made up and thrown into the mix.
I, and other people virtually unanimously that I have spoken about that subject all say the same thing, when they listen to a cover version as soon as they hear something that's not in the original song, whether it be Lyrics ,Riffs or Solo....Its click, off it goes, not interested.
I mean imagine clicking onto that video above, you hear the distinctive Intro chords building up to the Solo, then the Lead guitar comes in and its something improvised, something he just made up on the spot?, you would shake your head in disbelief and go..click!.
Its the same in a Live environment, Folk want to hear the song as it was recorded whether its Quo playing it or anyone else and if they don't give at least a recognisable rendition they will get flack as has previously been seen on message boards with Rossi doing all the overbending stuff and just flaffing his way through a solo, its not what the punters want to hear, So they will make no exception for you or anyone else just making stuff up, I mean why on Earth cover a song then change a big slab of it?, And do you know the first thing people say when they listen to that?.......He doesn't know how to play the Solo.
If you are going to play Quo covers and want to have great success doing it, your Solos are going to have to be one of two things- Accurate enough to be recognisable, Or so phenomenally jaw dropping you will be excused. Just doing a random Solo wont cut it mate, a grave mistake that too many follow.

I concur. There is no excuse for being slapdash when you have only one bands music to concern yourself with.

I concur. There is no excuse for being slapdash when you have only one bands music to concern yourself with. You seem to misunderstand... We weren't a Quo cover band. We were a Blues band who covered everyone from Muddy Waters to Led Zeppelin... as well as playing originals. Our set list of nearly 30 songs contained only two Quo songs... 'Railroad' and 'In My Chair'. We occasionally jammed '4500 Times' and 'Roll Over Lay Down' in rehearsals... This is an improvised jam we recorded 3 years ago... I recorded a lot more, but most were lost when my laptop died.

Of course you can. If no ones watching, no one knows.
You said. "You seem to misunderstand... We weren't a Quo cover band"
I said. "I concur. There is no excuse for being slapdash when you have only one bands music to concern yourself with.
Seems we are in agreement.

Even so, a cover band that played Quo songs different from the originals wouldn't bother me at all. In fact I'd prefer it to a carbon copy... A bit of originality and creativity is a good thing. When I was in school I used to hang around with other guitarists... There was one who we all used to take the piss out of because everything he played was a carbon copy of the originals. It earned him the name "Tab Man" because of his insistence on doing everything note for note from tablature. We believed very firmly in putting your own stamp on things. The quickest way to get bored of a song is to play it the same way every time.

No one plays it the same way as the next guy. No two bands playing the same songs sound the same. That`s what makes it what it is.

Was walking in Glencoe through Larig Gartin no that long back and a Cuckoo was doing it`s metronome type call. I timed it at exactly every 15 seconds. It`s was creepy. I thought to myself. "Who you calling Cuckoo ya cheeky B******" Then i thought of potential candidates and i suddenly felt super intelligent. smiley-laughing021
