Last night I went to see RR mark 63 squillion (or something) at the Half Moon in Putney. It’s just over a year since I saw them last. I missed both supports (or were there 3?) because I was in the bar chatting with many of the ‘familiar faces’. Sorry Mae!
Plenty of the ‘Quo Crew’ people there and most of Family Edwards, but no sign of Mr Bown, even though – if I have my geography right - the venue is only a stone’s throw from his home turf.
So, Rhino’s Revenge. On stage at about 9.30. Nice and loud. They are a solid, tight, rocking band and they always put on a good show. As with one of the times I saw them in 2018, the presence of Freddie on stage beefs up the sound enormously. There are many perfectly good reasons why he can’t be there every night but I wish he could.
The crowd were pretty unmoving but, let’s face it, this was a Friday night at the end of a working week, plus we’re all getting on a bit! Between numbers, they certainly made up for it, with plenty of enthusiastic applause etc. Although the band were on for 2 hours (give or take), hardly anyone left before the end, so they must have been enjoying it.
The set list:
Two Way Traffic Cougar Belavista Man Spacemaker Secretary Busy Doing Nothin’ Back In The USSR
[The band were joined on stage by Neil Pond, an excellent harmonica player and this beefed up the sound even more]
Before You Accuse Me Old Time Rock & Roll
[Rhino then thanked Neil and said, “Shall we get him back on stage later on?” Enthusiastic cheers from the audience. Unfortunately Neil didn’t hear this, so he stuck around to play on the next song too before leaving the stage and returning for the finale.]
Gravy Train One Note Blues Mony Mony/Jungle Love Jam Side Down Spend Spend Spend Never Too Old Bad News My Name is Stan Mine All Mine Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da The Rick Parfitt event scheduled for the 12th October 2019 at the Half Moon was given a big mention. Looks like it’s going to be quite special.
A few thoughts about the set list. I have no idea how much it has varied from night to night on this tour, but I would guess quite a bit.
Mr Edwards is clearly suffering from Beatles-album-itis. This is the one that causes you, for a while, to like a particular Beatles album more than the others. A couple of years ago, every Beatles song they played was from With The Beatles. Last night, both were from The White Album. They were also the two that, “should have been singles but weren’t”.
Finally, put on your Quo Eyes and then take another look at last night’s set list. Not one song from the FF era. No Paper Plane or Caroline or Don’t Waste My Time etc. This is a band that has realised it doesn’t need to hang on to that cape any more. Quite right too.
A great evening and I’m sure I’ll go again, sooner rather than later.
CM.

Nice one Pretty much the same set we saw (albeit in a different order) apart from Busy Doing Nothin', which they didn't do in Kinross. And missing Get Out Of Denver, Paranoid and One Bitten Twice Shy.
Agree on the lack of reliance on FF stuff. Mean Girl, Paper Plane and Break The Rules used to be occasional staples with Woodedz. Jam Side Down has become a fixture with Revenge. And nice to hear that Freddie was up there. Never seen Mr Bown at anything like this. Not heard about this Rick Parfitt tribute thing . Not that we can make it. We're on holiday in the wilds of the Highlands on 12 October But it sounds interesting. Always a good night out is Mr E and his little beat group.

Nice report .. and very interesting set list. Sounds like a mix of rock and pop tunes, especially with these Beatles tunes. Guess we all can sing along to Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da, but I'd have expected him to rather play something like Revolution. But then he does play Jam Side Down too .. Hm, very unpredictable is our Mr. Edwards .. as opposed to a Quo set.

We tend to still stick with the band we grew up with too .. . Talking about the Beatles - during the 70s and 80s they were still very much present: on the radio, in music lessons and all their albums were easily available. For a while now though I can't help but notice that they're sinking into oblivion. For the younger generations they're but a name, if at all, and their influence and importance to musical development are no longer common knowledge. Our DJs, who grew up with 50s and 60s music have long since retired and what was relevant has been redefined ..

When Chuck Berry supported Status Quo in Sweden a few years ago, Rhino pointed out in his tourlog that this guy's songs had appeared on his very first music albums, especially mentioning Roll Over Beethoven on With The Beatles.
He is without doubt a Beatles fan.
As for disappearing into oblivion, I'm not so sure!
This week, on Amazon UK, Sgt. Pepper is at #429 in their rock album sales chart and at #803 in their pop album sales chart. Set that against the tens of thousands of albums they sell every day...
Good/great music will always survive.
(In my opinion.)

It would be nice it were actually young people buying them, but somehow I doubt it. I rather suspect it's older more mature ones like us who buy them - to replace old vinyl/cassettes or because they always wanted them and now that the albums caught their eye finally went for them .. It's just a theory, but that's how I've been acting and for decades already. And I'm still not finished with getting all I want. I'm a slow buyer and I keep forgetting about albums ..

The music itself is largely timeless. In terms of The Beatles I mean. Much the same as Mozart or Beethoven. Neither of these will shift units in great numbers, or whichever orchestra/conductor is interpreting their music. But their importance is not even up for debate. The 'young' will always buy whatever is in vogue. It's pretty much what I did. Not necessarily hugely popular acts but certainly 'current' ones. I wasn't remotely interested in The Beatles or anyone else of that era when I was a teenager in the 70's. I've only grown to check them out retrospectively, although I do remember them vividly as a child. The history of popular culture is only relevant to those who were involved in creating it and contributing to it. That will apply further down the line when some of the present teenagers are approaching middle age. Although I fear the artistic influences now will have a lesser impact on future acts as it all merges into blandness and one long word-dominant key. So speaks an old bloke with his finger on the pulse of absolutely nothing at all except gradual decline

One song from the FF era hardly represents a need to "hang on to that cape". On the times that I've seen them, they should be applauded for having the confidence to play such songs. That said, one from that era is enough.

Talking of The Beatles' music disappearing into oblivion, check out the trailer for this new film, Yeterday: youtu.be/qD6FDkUXSZQ Seems to be entertaining .. and was only spoiled slightly when that red head whatshisname? made an appearance towards the end. It actually reminded me of RAOTW and WYW being played at every occasion, while many don't have a clue who Quo are either - and they still exist.

Possibly the most popular act on the planet I know that Francis is quite keen. He mentioned him in an interview. He is very talented (I saw him perform with Pink Floyd at Live Aid 2 or whatever it was called) but he just doesn't make the music I like. His new single with Justin Beiber is no.1 here and I find it quite unlistenable It sort of encapsulates everything I don't like about the more popular end of the music spectrum at the moment.

Yeah, that duet is awful to say the least. It's a shame because there were tracks where you could tell Ed could go off into a different, far more decent direction. But the crap he's writing and putting out at the moment is a real insult to my ears!

Still think it’s such a shame that Never Too Old won’t be making the next Quo album.
I really really like it

Last weekend he played two gigs to about 100K on the Hockenheimring. For two days it was impossible to cross the Rhein. Even F1 is less of a traffic catastrophe as they at least don't arrive and leave all at the same time.

I've been keeping up to date with music all my life and generally enjoying and appreciating a large proportion of it no matter the style, but the biggest acts around seem to be leaving me cold more than they've ever done. And these biggest acts appear to be mainly individuals as opposed to bands; Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Justin Beiber, Arian Grande, George Ezra, Miley Cyrus, Bruno Mars. Can't stand any of them. And all of them could fill a stadium in most countries. Oh well, it was good while it lasted

And strangely proud of it I read that series of books and watched the TV progs and found I was relating to everything in them. And that must've been 15 years ago! I was practically still young! By the way, tell me how many of those acts I mentioned that you like

Bruno Mars has an old school mentality that I like, I saw him on tv a few years ago and all of the band were doing dance moves like James Brown or the Jacksons and it looked great. My daughter loves a lot of the music you mentioned so I have learned to like / tolerate it. Re the grumpy old man thing, I certainly fall into that category at times.
