When was the last time you were in a Record Shop (or any shop for that matter) and whatever they were playing grabbed your attention so much you bought it?
Three times it's happened to me.
First time I was in HMV in Edinburgh and I heard a few songs and thought this is good. Asked at the counter and it was Paul Haig's Chain album playing. So must have been about 1989
Second time was in Rock Box in Camberley (can't remember the year) but as it turns out they were playing The Ideal Crash by Deus. The other good thing is they were selling it cheaply.
Last time was a couple of weeks ago up in London in Flashback Record Shop. It was really melodic and then changed into this great noise and carried on like that for a while. It was Audio Noir by Bossk. Apparently it's post-metal (whatever the hell that is). Anyway bought that a couple of days later and been playing it loudly in the car this week.
All 3 were well worth the purchase. Sometimes it is just worth taking a punt on something.

Last time was a few years ago in HMV in Southampton, I heard a track called “firecracker” a jangly, country tinged guitar track with harmonica all over it. Turns out it was Ryan Adams and the album was “ Gold” and I still love it and him as well.

Really good topic I haven't done it for a while now. Record/music shops seem to be a thing of the past. In Edinburgh at least. But I do recall being in HMV on Princes Street and hearing this strange hybrid of Middle Eastern music, Bonham type drumming and heavy guitar. It was a track called Barra Barra by an Algerian singer called Rachid Taha and an album called Medina. This was about 2002. I bought it there and then. The album wasn't like that all the way through; it was generally much lighter. But I actually quite liked it. I still do. The guitarist, to my eternal glee, turned out to be one of my favourites; Steve Hillage! Rachid Taha is now deceased, alas, suffering a heart attack at the age of 59 in Paris last year.

I cant even remember what the last cd I bought was, it could have been the rolling stones GRR. I only listen to music in the car and then it will be radio 2. so it aint worth me buying anything any more.

Can't remember if I've ever done that actually. What I do remember is browsing through bands I knew in record stores and buying an album just because I liked one song. It was dangerous though, more often than not I didn't like (most of) the rest.
Can't happen these days any more - like Loz, I just don't listen to the radio, not even in the car. Every time I actually switch it on it's impossible to get at least two listenable tunes in a row. So it's switched off again nearly straight away.

Spotify has been a great source for me over the last few years. The Record shop thing like I said has happened about 3 times, but Spotify has lead to quite a few purchases. Best of which has been getting me into Clutch through playing Earth Rocker because I liked the title and more recently it lead to me purchasing the new Specials album. Haven't listened to the radio much in recent years.

Specific shows back in the day like Alan Freeman, John Peel and Tommy Vance - and never any commercial station. Adverts and phone-ins; the scourge of radio leading to tension and eventually insanity I guess that's why I've also avoided Spotify. My stepdaughter swears by it though.
