Now we've reached the first album I didn't bother with buying on release. In fact it took me years to get it and I merely did so as it was included in the Back2Back series. The first single was SBYBIL and I hated that straight away, still do, and no attempt at making it seem rockier with the video could change that. The title song followed as next single. Paired with the cover I thought they've really lost it now - JS wasn't just a one off, it was the road they had chosen. I merely like two songs and there's an average cover as well, but overall not for me. Add to it the sound that's simply horrible - it has a white noise quality for me - and you've got the reasons why I never listen to it. (How this and the plastic sounding JS could've been recorded in one go is a mystery to me ). No surprise so many fans deserted them during these years.

The last of the real quality Quo albums that featured Alan. Some great guitar work on here and very well produced.
A personal favourite for me, and the first time I'd seen them play live(at the NEC).

I don’t skip any of these songs....prefer it to JS but not in the same league as WYW imo.
Still much better than anything that came after.

No surprise so many fans deserted them during these years.... Not sure I'd agree with that statement; not in the UK at any rate. They were still a massive attraction. I remember because it was still really hard to get tickets! There was also only one track from it released as a single in the UK. Funny how they 'managed' different markets. I've gone for two tracks which I never took to from the outset; Mountain Lady and Don't Stop Me Now. The fact that they came one after the other on the album was handy for skipping. I didn't like it as much as Just Supposin' but I still liked it overall. Take Me Away remains a classic to me with Alan's bass almost taking the plaster off my bedroom wall at the time! :oo: And my mum shouting at me to 'turn that racket down' Probably considered by many to be Quo's last great album because it was the last with the classic line up. Not by me I hasten to add; not even close. But happy days for me nonetheless. This was the second - and last - "Holy Trinity" period. The next 18 years would prove to be a challenge for all concerned.

The next 18 years would prove to be a challenge for all concerned. There seems to be a big difference in general perception when you compare the UK and Germany (and maybe other countries as well ?). Obviously they were more popular earlier in the UK and the fans stayed loyal longer. The thing is, for me it never was about loyalty, although I'd defend them when and where necessary. I had stopped to like the music, so I didn't buy it any longer. And with the release of all the under par albums I doubted whether they'd still cut it live - I considered them a spent force - so I stopped going to gigs too. There definitely wasn't a 'holy Trinity' period for most fans here (see album chart positions) including me. Actually the damage had been done with IYCSTH and nothing they recorded for a long time afterwards could repair it. Guess that's why it never was a line-up thing for me. The bad albums were recorded by the same guys that had recorded the brilliant albums earlier. They had simply run out of steam, had to deal with their personal lives falling apart, drugs and alcohol had crept in massively and the music no longer held the same importance as before.

Strange one this, on paper it shouldn't be, but to my ears, it is the last truly great Quo album, easily in my top 5.
How this was recorded at the same time as Just Supposin' I'll never know. This is so much darker and soooo much better.
I even like SYBIL on the album!!
The end of the second golden era and Quo would never attain these (musical) heights ever again.
No skippers for me.

I think NTL is a pretty consistent album without really a bad song on it. Nothing particularly classic, but all pretty good.

A good average album, compeared to what had been released prior to it, but a classic compared what was released after it..

A good average album, compeared to what had been released prior to it, but a classic compared what was released after it.. Which may contribute to its general status. A retrospective sort of thing. I should really have put the opening title track as a 'skip' as well. I didn't really rate it that much. Bit limp. But when I put on the album I just chucked it on from the beginning; as you do. Or did.

I don't mind all the material on this album, its certainly not the best ever but nothing is particularly bad. A none from me, for the first time ever.

You've complained about the sound so often, why don't you give the deluxe edition a go? I haven't heard the Back2Back CD but Andy Pearce's mastering certainly doesn't sound like white noise to me. Yeah you can hear some compression (John Eden said the mixing board didn't have enough headroom or something) but it still sounds better than some of the more recent albums!

Anybody else think Carol sounds oddly out of place among the tracks that surround it? And Mountain Lady is proof to me that Alan had really lost it. What is that supposed to be?

I don't like most of the songs, frozenhero, so I won't buy another version of them, even if the sound is improved. The songs are still the same. You sure are far better than I am analysing the technical side of it and I can't really explain what it is about the sound I don't like, but it doesn't change the fact as such. Generally speaking, the songs are more important to me than the sound. I've always loved the RAOTW album despite it's 'thin' original sound transferred from my friends record to cassette and then played on my mono cassette player. Don't get me wrong, John Eden's remix is a vast improvement, the album sounds fantastic now, but had the quality of songs not always been there, all the work he has put into this would've been wasted - for me at least. From recent albums the one that could do with a remixing the most would be Heavy Traffic IMO, but again that's because I like most of the songs too.

I voted for none. I try not to over-analyse this album, as I fear that I may not like it as much. But I do like it, so I'll leave it at that. It's not a very varied album though; Francis sings lead on all the songs, and there aren't any ballads or slower songs. My favourites are, NTL, Long Ago, Enough is Enough, and Riverside.

Always loved the solo in Enough Is Enough. It's a little off the wall. One of my favourites and yet probably on of the simplest.
