It's funny, but I never ever considered Deep Purple to be anything other than just the one band. Different line ups even from very early on and, briefly in the mid to late 70's, a different style but I always just thought of them as Deep Purple. Not sure what the line up is these days. Steve Morse on guitar I think if he's still fit enough. He did have issues with his hand. They were supposed to have done their final tour a couple of years back (I know coz sis went to see them) but I see they're back on the road this winter. Remind you of anyone? Interesting. For me the band that recorded say Hush and the guys that came up with Highway Star didn't have much in common. And DP dissolved mid-70s ! Bit like the guys that recorded Slow Train and Tongue Tied

I'll probably split this into a separate Manfred Mann thread at some point. Incidentally, just as an aside, I downloaded what I thought was an interesting Manfred Mann album a few years back called The Lone Arranger. I don't know an awful lot about it but it sounds like a collection of rearrangements and remixes and it's actually very good. There's a brilliant version of T. Rex's Get It On entitled Bang A Gong. Sounds like Chris Thomson on vocals but I could be completely wrong. I'd recommend it if anyone hasn't heard it I've got the 2-CD edition of Lone Arranger, in the booklet Manfred has typed up a comment about every track (and how hard it was to record). Really interesting album, although not all songs/versions are to my liking - especially Manfred's remake of the Disco Boys' remake of Manfred's remake of Bruce's "For You". How often can you remake a remake? :O And no, it's not Chris singing "Bang a Gong" - it's current MMEB singer Robert Hart!! But nice praise for him It's also nice to hear Noel McCalla again, if only on a very short segment. Chris DOES appear on the album (aside from his original vocal performance somewhere between all the beats in "For You"): he sings a few lines in "Light My Fire". He has now announced he wants to retire. Honestly, his voice has said goodbye years ago, sad as it may sound... They did a very nice arrangement of "Bang a Gong" live too, which is quite different from the "Lone Arranger" version and incorporates a riff from "Give Me the Good Earth" (1974!)... DP are also releasing a new album soon... just heard the new single today. Pretty good (reminds me of the Now What?! stuff) but Steve's guitar solo is horrible!

Well, Top 40 at least Should've been so much better though given the quality of the product. Seems the marketing campaign focused on the UK mainly. I couldn't help but feel them playing the SWR1 gig was kind of a last minute decision. It wasn't even mentioned on the Quo homepage. This is interesting because it shows the difference between a regular gig and a guest appearance at an event like the SWR1 Hitparade. When I talked to Ian Tompson (sound guy for MMEB), I asked why the MMEB gig from 2015's finale (they were allowed to do an encore, unlike Quo!) wasn't released as a DVD. He told me they immediately contacted the station after the gig (which was great!) and they refused to license it. What a shame!

You been reading old gig reports ?

I really think the album is underrated. Yeah, it's kind of overproduced and commercial, but there's a lot of strong tunes on it, and some of Manfred's most beautiful and haunting solos Before the album came out, the band tried out a lot of the tracks live, all with Noel McCalla on vocals. It's interesting how these differ (sometimes quite radically) from the finished versions, and not just because Chris Thompson ended up singing some of them - like "Pleasure and Pain". I really love this one:
