One track only allowed. Big Man for me.

I don't like Big Man either, but I think I'll have to go with Tommy/Tommy's in Love. I can listen to Francis' Country songs as long as they have something about them (like Sail Away or Crazy Crazy) but this song doesn't imo. Listen to it occasionally to remind myself how bad it is, but usually skip it, and there aren't many Quo songs that I skip!

I can sort of narrow it down to maybe half a dozen. I think. All of them slower numbers bar one I reckon. Beautiful and Tommy are the stand-outs with the first one probably shading it. Tommy/Tommy's In Love is very similar in approach but I read in a recent interview that Francis loves that style (can't remember what he called it) so it's no surprise he mimicked it. I'm afraid I don't like it. It's a sort of 50's crooning style a la The Platters ( The Great Pretender, Only You etc.) that I just never took to. A big mention in passing for Tango which I loathe with something bordering on a passion. If someone my age actually has any passion left But.... Beautiful it is. These are the votes of the Heiland jury

I know it is a cover and sure there are worse but I go for FUN FUN FUN, for some reason I hate this song.

Nobody's mentioned Mystery Island so far .. I knew someone would choose this one....thought it would be Morty actually! For some reason I don't understand, I quite like this one!

I wouldn't go as far as to say I quite like it but I can listen to it without reaching for the 'skip' button. Mainly because it's supposed to be what it actually is; South sea island, grass skirt encased nonsense. But thanks for the vote of confidence

Actually, it's funny you should mention that one. There I was, 1983. I'd played the new single Ol' Rag Blues and was distinctly underwhelmed. Turned the little blue vinyl 7" over and stuck on the B-side. It started really well and I thought immediately " this is more like it". Then as soon as Francis started singing, it morphed into this insipid stuff that a hairy twenty-odd year old didn't want to hear. My immediate thoughts were " well, the album can only get better". I hate being proved wrong. Even to myself

Then there's Speechless of course .. Actually quite a lot of the early stuff from POMM and SP would qualify as well, but this would be unfair towards the boys. After all they were still learning. Most of 1982 is awful too, not just Big Man or ILRR and they don't really have an excuse for the steep drop in quality in the late 70s/80s - well, apart from drugs maybe ..

Unfortunately there are a few contenders, the first two that sprung to mind for me are Blessed are the Meek & Sail Away. Both I find truly unlistenable, even just in the background while I am doing something else, they just grate too much with me. I think I'll go with, Sail Away as the worst ...

So there, covers obviously do count (In that case Hound Dog is another serious contender) Fair enough. But if we're including covers, that takes it to a completely different level. And Restless wins it by several light years. A song they should never have touched. Except with some paraffin and a naked flame. Even the original is absolutely dreadful.

Oh, there are quite a few ”stinkers”, but two songs I really love to hate are Dreamin’ and Going Downtown Tonight. The absolutely awful synths plays an important part in my hate, but both songs had been way below accepted standard even without the synths. IMO of course!

per Thankfully GDTT is not a band composition (although Guy Johnson collaborated with FR later). Unlike that song, I always thought Dreamin' could sound listenable if it were stripped of the arrangement - the melody isn't half bad, the lyrics though, ugh... I've just looked through my digital collection and was surprised I rated very few Quo songs with just one star. Even things like Big Man or One for the Money got a 3/5 from me. Hm, I think I'm pretty lenient when it comes to Quo music, eh?

Hm, I think I'm pretty lenient when it comes to Quo music, eh? The extended version of Naughty Girl is a huge improvement on the version that came out back in 1986. OK, it still has that irritating faux brass but the guitars are much further forward in the mix, especially Rick's. I play it way more often than I ever did Dreamin'. Even the 'wet mix'

Doesn't anyone dislike Beautiful as much as me? 1994 was a strange and unsettling year. Beautiful, Restless and Tango all came out at roughly the same time. Certainly from the same sessions. I bet they were a barrel of laughs. No wonder Rick didn't participate to the usual extent

Restless and Tango I can tolerate - maybe with the RTYD production the album would've come across well, better. With Rick it was the other way round though is my guess: He came up with nothing, so they had to use what was there. IMO Rick was cruising at the time, literally and figuratively , and Francis was probably too happy and too tired - he had 2-3 small kids in the house at the time - to come up with better quality. I tend to blame Rick more, at least Francis did take on the responsibility and did write something.

I tend to blame Rick more, at least Francis did take on the responsibility and did write something. I don't know if Rick didn't bring anything to the table or whether his material was rejected. If he did, could it possibly have been any worse? The fact that he didn't even have a B-side on a single suggests he probably didn't and was otherwise engaged I agree though to an extent; it was the arrangement and production of the songs as much as the songs themselves that created a bland experience for the Quo listener. 9 of the tracks were Rossi/Frost compositions but the irony is that they also wrote the best songs on the album. I suppose with the law of averages they would have Good set that year funnily enough. 5 songs from the album made it in although Queenie didn't last the whole tour. Happy days. Sort of
