I’m still working on the NEC 1982 gig using various sources to pull together an (almost) complete version of the gig. It’s a very difficult task, given that any audio that isn’t part of the video release, seems to be a few milliseconds faster than the footage, meaning theres a lot of edits to be done.
I did have a first draft, which was made available for a brief period. I still have this first draft, though the audio is far from perfect and the video still needs a fair bit of tidying too. But it’s the full gig in it’s (almost) entirety. Aside from some of the Rossi chatter (like at the start of DW) all of the songs are there.
If anyone has any sources available be it video or audio (in best possible quality) please let me know, I could definitelt benefit from finding the best sources out there!
Many thanks
Paul

Sounds like some task Seems nobody on here can be of any help .. I know I had drifted away from Quo with the previous albums already and never even knew about that gig at the time. Up till today I've merely seen a few snippets and pics from it.

Might be worth being careful with this. I've seen similar projects before and been enthusiastic only to find that they tend to get pulled. I suspect Quo management or media company intervention, although that's merely a guess on my part. Good luck with it anyway

I mean, it has been done before - that's how we got the 2013 Hammy gig i.e. So the only explanation I can see is an official release at least planned, if not scheduled. That in turn would mean they've got the material (whole gig, extras ..) complete for it.

If you’re interested to see the first draft, I can send a dropbox link, though it’ll only be available for a limited amount of time. Like I say, video quality ain’t superb and there are some audio issues (hence the ongoing work), but right now, it’s the closest we have to the full Charlie gig on video.
Drop me a PM.

Good luck with it anyway Ah, but this wouldn’t really be out on Youtube or anything like that, more a project that (once complete) can be shared amongst fans. I’m looking for no profit or any gain from it, just a free live concert to share. hopefully keeping it away from video streaming services, would keep it away from being pulled. The only thing I put up on Youtube was a sample of the very start of the video, so the only music is “God Save The Queen”and part of the drone. (See below)

There'a few there who look completely out of place, wondering what's going on Looking forward to the whole concert, @paulskeets

That takes me back. I can't remember if that's the video footage or the BBC live broadcast. Or both. I also remember there was an interview with the band on "Pebble Mill At One" at lunch time. I saw it during me lunch break because I lived near the work in those days and went home. Great stuff, Paul.

@paulskeets have you contrasted the footage by any chance? it looks really dark at certain point, for example the thumbnail of Rossi Also, add a slight blue-y tint on the low section on Colour Corrector, removes the horrible brownish tint from VHS footage and makes it easier on the eyes and add a black 'border' about 0.035 in the effects layering, it's what I've done and it helps hide the tracing / weird section normally at the bottom (sometimes the top) of the vhs - dvd rip Have you managed to deal with the credit issue during Don't waste my time? use the trick I sent you a while back Cheers

It was high profile for the band at the time and the first 45 mins/1 hr was on live on BBC1 ( Rossi can be heard saying "are we off the air yet" when the live TV finished. I think Charlie left the gig, and I assume Diana, when the Live TV section finished.
The whole gig in its entirety was played on the Tommy Vance show the following Friday. I recorded it on cassette tape and had the annoying turning off the tape scenario, half way thru, to fit it all in.
Sounded like a cracking atmosphere on the tape. God knows what happened to my tape, probably got lost on various overseas moves.

As one who was there, Diana did not attend and Charlie stayed until the end of the set, so his entourage had to as well!
My then girlfriend tapped it for me, shame they those chose Betamax.
They turned the TV lights off after the BBC had stopped the TV transmission and the only set list difference was dropping WYP and playing DWMT earlier. After seeing Quo play it a couple of times earlier in the tour, I thought they would do Dear John, but no. Eyes off the ball on that one, playing no tracks off of the latest album.

I remember the gig quite well. It was supposed to start at 9:30 live on BBC1 straight after the news, but as it was the time of the Falklands War, the news was extended to 10:00. I remember Mr Windsor and his bored entourage, leaving before the Encore. I also remember my mate getting lost on the way back to Essex from the NEC

Still got the cassette I think. But haven't had a cassette player for about 20 years and since I chucked out my stereo.

Me as well! Recorded it on to a C120 tape. I played it so much the tape eventually snapped, so I was absolutely ecstatic when they released the live footage of 4500 Times on the TPAOY DVD, and then again on the BBC Live Box set.
What a shame we'll never get to see the full version from Milton Keynes.

I recorded the gig on an open reel tape recorder, then (downloaded) recorded the concert on to 2 C90 cassette tapes allowing me to fade out at the end of a track, very professional

There was a Bootleg Double vinyl album of the whole gig around in 83 ish ! I think it was the whole gig. I had copy and the quality was pretty good. It was a weird title and a strange type of cover if my memory serves me. I saw a copy advertised on eBay a couple of years ago.

I was at a record fair around '83 or '84 where I saw what they called "the vinyl master" of the gig. It was a double album and had a green and white BBC record label but no official sleeve. I didn't buy it coz I couldn't afford it. I have no idea if it was genuine or not. So I bought a video of the Dortmund gig from '82 taken, presumably, from the German TV broadcast. It was a dud and never played properly. You live and (never) learn

In retrospect, I'm glad they filmed the "Charlie" gig at the time. I do enjoy watching the old video cassette every now and then, it takes me back in time. It's a shame 4500 Times wasn't included, but I'm grateful they put it on the TPAOY DVD in all its 23-minute glory. In order to watch them perform Dirty Water and Don't Waste My Time, I have to watch the Live at the BBC DVD. I think What You're Proposing fell through the cracks somehow. So yes, a video including all the songs would have been nice, but hey, except for one song, they're all there, somewhere. I remember listening to Tommy Vance presenting the gig, but I don't think I recorded it. Incidentally, the gig I attended on their 20th Anniversary tour was filmed, too. It was the only gig I saw Pete Kircher perform with Quo, and the final time I saw Quo play live... before I returned in 2000. So good luck, @paulskeets , with pulling together another almost complete version of the gig. Great idea. Would really love to have a full version of the Milton Keynes gig, too. What You're Proposing was dropped so they could end the Live TV Broadcast on Don't Waste My Time, and I have the Friday Rock Show broadcast from Jan 1983 with Tommy Vance hosting. I'm working on the Milton Keynes gig

@inna, I think What You're Proposing was dropped altogether from the set that night. It certainly wasn't on the Tommy Vance broadcast and I always thought that was the full gig.

I remember that well. This was 1982, you had to run around the NEC to catch the last trains, no link to the station then!! We were posh, my mate had a car!! If you are correct, there was obviously a delay on the broadcast, although I don't believe there was. The pre-gig pictures were in daylight and there would not have been that much of a delay. Not for HRH!!

Absolutely correct Mr Mortified, WYP was dropped. That sure had to improve the gig I guess you didn't take any photos ? It were the days when cameras weren't allowed and security would search you for them .. They actually still do at Quo gigs (if not for cameras), which I find absolutely ridiculous. Remember a night in Stuttgart not so long ago, when Sting played the neighbouring H.-M.-S.-Halle, so fans of both acts passed through the same gates - and Quo fans were searched while Sting fans were waved through.
